This is a real shocker, and not just Hollywood but the rest of America should love it. What a coup for Warner Bros getting The Man on this, the 4th version of A Star Is Born. Of course, Clint Eastwood will produce (as always through Malpaso) as well as direct the script by Will Fetters along with producers Billy Gerber and and Basil Iwanyk and Jon Peters (who made the infamous 3rd version of A Star Is Born with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson). No male lead is cast yet, but the possibilities are endless. The project, which has been at WB for several years, had hoped to pair Beyoncé and Will Smith. But how about P Diddy (who’s turning into a surprisingly fine actor along with Beyoncé’s husband Jayz), Eddie Murphy (reteaming with Beyoncé after Dreamgirls), or any white guy imaginable though Robert Downey Jr and Jon Hamm are names that have been floating?
Hey, I’m one of those huge fans who thinks Clint can do anything. And Beyoncé scored at the box office for Screen Gems — one of its biggest — in Obsessed. (And, yes, I do happen to think she can act.) This is going to be a high profile film but low cost since Eastwood is at the helm. The idea is to start shooting in the Fall.
Of course, Clint has had a huge interest in music off and on screen. He intended to major in music theory in college. He learned how not to do a musical when starring in the dreadful Paint Your Wagon (1969). He played that super-cool jazz DJ in Play Misty For Me, his 1971 directorial debut. He sdirected and starred alongside his son Kyle in 1982′s Honkytonk Man about a Depression-era aspiring country music singer. He directing Bird (1988), a biopic starring Forest Whitaker as jazz musician Charlie “Bird” Parker. He more recently has been doing all his own scores for his movies, including Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby and Changeling. Eastwood also partly scored Gran Torino with his son Kyle and Jamie Cullum.
Warner Bros’ idea of a 4th version of A Star Is Born has been floating around for some time now. This pic fell apart and just came back together. Back in January, Deadline reported that Nick Cassavetes was in early talks with Warner Bros to direct an updated version of the well-worn story of a love affair between an alcoholic star on the way down, and a young female artist on the rise. There have been a trio of A Star Is Born versions made since the 1930s, the last one coming in 1976 with Kristofferson playing the boozer and Streisand the wannabe. Or even 4 if you consider What Price Hollywood (1932) made by George Cukor which is often forgotten.

The Judy Garland/James Mason version is the classic. The standard. Why not educate people as to film history? I echo the sentiments: Beyonce cannot act. She is one note. Let her play something other than a singer and prove otherwise. Also, to say that P. Diddy — Sean Combs is ‘turning into a surprisingly fine actor’ is an insult both to the words ‘fine’ and ‘actor.’ Being African-American, I will say it…you don’t have to placate us with false sentiment about two “actors” who will not measure up to this material. If it were truly about doing justice to a classic, then use Eastwood’s clout to cast UNKNOWNS — or at the very least Broadway trained thesps. Just because it’s the one Black project slated to come out doesn’t mean journalists/agents, etc. have to pretend the people who are cast are ‘phenomenal.’ There are plenty of professionally trained unknowns who’d love a shot. I know Beyonce means box office, but beyond that, if the performance doesn’t have legs what will it matter? We already saw that this past year with “Hereafter” — just because Eastwood’s name is on it doesn’t mean it will automatically connect with audiences. Even less if the acting doesn’t hold water.
Beyonce was terrific in “Cadillac Records.” Not just okay but really terrific.
But there are known fine actors who are African American that don’t get cast very often. The whole industry is f***** up, we don’t need rappers to act e.g. ll cool j, ice t. Again there are African American actors that are amazing and should be cast instead…of this rif raff.
Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you!!!!!!,
That was to J.T. Not to Oh Yeah. She was not terrific in Cadillac Records.
Everyone above me is angry that once again BEYONCE is about to steal a job from their favorite actress.
“Everyone above me is angry that once again BEYONCE is about to f*ck up yet another movie she’s cast in.”
Fixed that for ya.
(And yes, I know Combs has done Broadway)
If Beyonce does anything but sing it will flop.
I thought Beyonce was a bad actress too, until I saw CADILLAC RECORDS…Clint Eastwood however confuses me, GRAN TORINO (sp?) made me rethink his skills.
whatevs I’ll still watch to see for myself.
I’m intrigued by the idea of Clint Eastwood trying his hand at directing a musical, but I think there are plenty of actresses who’d do a much better job in the lead female role than Beyonce. She’s just a pretty face who can’t sing, and she definitely can’t act. Her overacting made Obsessed even more cringe-inducing.
Also, as much as I’d love to see Robert Downey Jr take the male role, if he was teamed up with Beyonce, that would be one movie of his I wouldn’t go see.
Jennifer Hudson would have been a better choice. She can act and is a much better singer.
DING DING DING!
We have a winner!
JHud would KILL this!
Pair her w/ Terrance Howard, Don Cheadle , Chiwetel Ejiofor, Colin Farrell or even Ben Affleck (yep!) & watch the fireworks.
Beyonce– super gorgeous but bland as vanilla pudding yet even more flavorless.
Diddy?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
No way to improve on the Garland/Mason/Cukor version. Is this Clint’s first remake? ‘Cause it’s a idea.
Not a Beyonce fan but I am a fan of Clint Eastwood as director. Weren’t there rumors that Gerard Butler was being considered for male lead??
Oh HELL no. WTF are they thinking? Hey, let’s redo the Wizard of Oz starring Beyonce. Oh wait, how about Gentlemen Prefer Blondes starring Beyonce and that other obnoxious half wit Rihanna? Oh no, I got it — Gone With The Wind starring Beyonce and Denzel!!! (“Frankly Bee-otch I just don’t give a sh*t”) It’ll be a SMASH!!!
Your comment made me laugh. So true, so perfect.
So limited of you to merely think of these artist solely based on their race & use stereotypical language to prove it. Not to mention typical.
More that obvious WTF you’re thinking.
Clearly you’ve never seen The Wiz.
Clearly, Alex, you’ve never seen The Wiz,the stage version, that is. It was far superior to that weird Diana Ross thing that was filmed. Please don’t lump everything together, just because Black actors are involved.
The real thing that is annoying is that “A Star Is Born” doesn’t need to be remade. The 70′s version with Streisand shouldn’t have been made. The best version was and always will be the 1954 Judy Garland /James Mason one.
I have to agree…The stage version of The Wiz was awesome! I was fortunate to see it as a kid. As much as I am a Diana Ross fan, she was too old for the part in the film version; it had some nice moments, but not a home run.
And no, we do not have to lump every black actor together. We have the right to critique every actor (or person who says that theya are an actor) based upon the work that they’ve done. No one is hating on Beyonce, but she really just seems to want an “award” for a role and is always talking about how hard she worked in a part, what she did to prepare, etc…a real actor doesn’t need to broadcast that – it’s you job. You are supposed to do all of the above! She just seems “obsessed” with getting an award because of one or two reasons: either she thinks she deserves it, or because Jennifer Hudson won the “big one” right out of the gate!
Astonishing news but then that’s Eastwood all over – the man marches to the beat of his own drummer. And I gotta say that although another remake of A Star Is Born doesn’t exactly thrill me, the fact that Clint Eastwood is directing counts for a lot.
You’re right. It should like Bride Wars. Now that was a movie.
I like Beyonce but I don’t particularly think this is a great idea. And just getting Eastwood doesn’t guarantee box office- he has had plenty of films that no one went to see, though it will draw some interest. I don’t know- I will try to keep an open mind.
So they’re remaking Glitter?
Why don’t they go with an “up and comer” like amber stevens! LOVE Clint’s films and that he has such a strong music background
Beyonce can act look at Cadillac Records
Glad you mentioned that. Cadillac Records was very decent and she was excellent in it.
If Cadillac Records is your evidence then you have proven the point that she simply cannot act.
What caliber gun is she going to use? Oh wait. That’s no longer PC. My bad. One can almost see this as a classic double-feature with Bab’s remake of Gypsy. Grab your barf bag, it’s going to be a nasty trip to the cinema (or your local Blockbuster where it will be in record time) Red Box isn’t even going bother giving it a slot in their machines.
Beyonce proved her acting chops and should have been nominated for Cadillac Records playing Etta james She is superb and with Clint Directing, this will be great.
Michael Caine wrote in his autobiography that when he and Beyonce did the Austin Powers film she confided to him that she dreamt of winning an Oscar.
Ever since I read that I can’t help seeing all her subsequent roles as nothing but Oscar bids.
I do not like Beyonce at all. Years ago she said in several interviews that she wanted to win a Grammy, Tony and an Oscar.
Since then, I felt she was only out for awards. My personal opinion is that Jennifer Hudson (who is awesome) won her Oscar because of Beyonce backlash. People hated Beyonce so much and the fact that she made winning an Oscar one of her (more likely her dad’s) goals that they voted for J-hud out of spite.
Nah mate, Jennifer Hudson won that Oscar fair and sqaure. She owened every scene she was in and outsang Beyonce on every number. Jennifer Hudson made “Dream Girls” watchable.
If people knew anything about the stage play Effie was the bigger part always and also Beyonce was told to turned down her voice for the character Deena. As somebody said, Jennifer Hudson is one note as an actress and a singer, imo. Some critics did praise Beyonce’s performance in Dreamgirls and realized that she had the more understated role.
@Lorraine:
That sounds like a YOU problem.
Shame on you to judge someone based on what someone else said.
I bet you watch Wendy Williams & believe everything she says is the truth, too.
I couldn’t have cared less about another Star is Born remake yesterday, but Clint’s involvement peaks my interest. Even when Clint missteps, it’s not a complete disaster. And I’m interested in what he can do with Beyonce’s performance. She’s only impressed me in Cadillac Records so far, but what a great performance that was.
“But how about P Diddy (who’s turning into a surprisingly fine actor”
Yeah, he effortlessly switches from sleepy to drowsy to keep the audience on edge.
I know Beyonce is a box office name, but she does NOT do justice to this STAR role! Find some other REAL star!!
clint (at 80) has skated all those clowns.
stroke of genius.
B can’t act.
IRRELEVANT.
ms. FINKE spot on with sad eyed, (mason) beautiful john hamm.
An excellent but not well know black actor is Damien Leake. He is about the right age to play
Norman Main. He is handsome, well spoken and can act.
He might be able to coax a performance from Beyonce which is the basis of the story.
I cast the first vote for Damien Leake. the New Norman Maine!
Didn’t the Joe Biden pre-nominee election “well-spoken” comment make calling a black person well-spoken taboo?
may be – but I’m black – so i can say it lol lol – I meant that he has a really nice voice, easy on the ear. and he can sing. but Norman Mane does not sing in the movie.
z e r o interest, makes burlesque look like a good idea…
