UPDATE: Paramount press release for The Fighter on iTunes below. Right below is Focus’ release, issued after Deadline broke the story.
EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that Focus Features has made a deal with iTunes that will allow SAG members to view its awards season candidate, The Kids Are All Right through a multitude of viewing devices. This follows last week’s announcement by Fox Searchlight of its accommodation with iTunes so that SAG members could watch 127 Hours, Black Swan and Conviction. Other studios are expected to follow suit quickly, because the acting races are so tight this year and because, unlike the AMPAS voting, SAG polls are open for two more weeks. Focus Features is making the service available today because we’re heading into a four-day weekend with MLK Day, and the Golden Globes. The Kids Are All Right is a triple SAG Award nominee, for Ensemble Cast, Annette Bening for Actress, and Mark Ruffalo for Supporting Actor.
Will the move toward iTunes make DVD screeners obsolete? I’m told the jury’s out. The process allows voters to view films on devices, which adds a convenience factor, and there are safeguards. Viewers get 24 hours to finish watching a film before it goes dead. The system could certainly work for AMPAS members, though it might be more of a challenge to get an older membership to embrace it, as well as Writers Guild and Producers Guild membership. The Directors Guild doesn’t is the sole body that still tries to make voting members watch eligible films on the big screen.

That sounds inconvenient to have to watch the movie within a 24 hour window. Not to mention being obligated to watch it on certain devices. DVD screeners are preferable by far. Speaking of which, just got “The Social Network” dvd today – excellent!
no you get it for 30 days. once you hit play you have 24 hours to finish it.
Well, there go all those “For Your Consideration” watermarked files that would bounce around the Internet. That’s one way to kill them.
Question to studios and filmmakers:
You really want Academy voters to screen your film and judge you on a 6-inch iPad screen?
Really?
Seriously?
Really?
Thank you for proving Billy Wilder right again when he had Norma Desmond say:
“I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.”
Hummm… I am a SAG and WGA member and view Black Swan last night on Itune. I enjoyed the movie but kinda felt bad for Darren Aronofsky, his directing style was neutered on my MacBookPro’s 15 inch screen. It also took 2 and a half hours to download on my broadband connect. Though I did see The Town on my MacBookPro and it was great. I think the DGA is right on visual style directors she be seen at the movies to truly feel the director’s intent on story telling. I just don’t have the time to see too many films these days so I do look forward to downloading The Kids Are All Right.
I tried downloading BLACK SWAN after getting my notice in the mail and it was a mess. (The downloading process.) The file claimed to take 4 hours (with a fast connection) and because I’d only downloaded one film (intending to get TRUE GRIT too) the 24 hour window closed so I couldn’t watch anything.
I think this process is going to result in a lot of people voting for TITLES instead of actually watching the flicks.
How do I get the codes to begin with to download them please.
I downloaded the films available for consideration, only to be told that I cannot watch them via Apple tv because “the film is registered to be viewed on another device.”
What is that about? Anyone?
Is there something I am missing?
Thanks.
