Fox 2000 has closed a deal that turns the bestselling crime book The Monster of Florence into a star vehicle for George Clooney. Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander are aboard to write the script. Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen of the Jinks/Cohen Company will produce with Smokehouse’s Grant Heslov, and McQuarrie.
Clooney will play Douglas Preston, who wrote the nonfiction bestseller The Monster of Florence with Italian crime reporter Mario Spezi. Preston is a thriller writer who met Spezi after moving to Italy. Together, they set out to solve a 30-year old serial murder case. Seven couples were savagely murdered between 1974 and 1985 while they sat in cars parked just outside Florence. The trail was cold when Preston moved into a nearby farmhouse and began asking questions. By that time, suspects had been let go, and authorities didn’t welcome the curiosity of the writer. They threw Spezi in jail and interrogated Preston. Finally, the sleuths began putting the pieces into place and solved the murder.
The project was pitched to Fox 2000′s Carla Hacken just before the holiday. She and president Elizabeth Gabler got excited enough to seal the deal just before Christmas. The producers had post-holiday meetings set around town, but they proved unnecessary and were canceled. For Clooney, this is another opportunity to make a movie in Italy, which has become his second home. Clooney is directing and starring in The Ides of March, and then joins Sandra Bullock in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed Gravity. CAA repped the book deal.

This should be a great movie. The book is excellent and a bit crazy, especially what happens to the writers. Preston is a great writer, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a better film version of his and Lincoln Child’s The Relic.
Heath
You won’t print this but … This author’s the hack of all hacks, writes absolute junk. Did anyone read Relic? – or see the movie? There’s a reason hardly any of his and his partner’s stuff have been made since then: they stink. I CAN’T BELIEVE CLOONEY ACTUALLY SIGNED ON TO DO THIS. I assume another CAA package? Boy, what those sharks and their packages have done to the movie business. Did they somehow jam this piece of garbage down Clooney’s throat? Does he want a paycheck? That’s the only way this makes sense.
Ok Michael you are retarded, Preston’s books are compelling, informative, interesting, exciting and great to read. Have you even read any of Preston and Child’s books? The movie of Relic was crappy, I must say, but the fact that you assume the book is as terrible without reading it is disgusting, please never post a comment anywhere unless you know what the heck you’re talking about.
And you are?
Anyone who says Preston can’t write or calls him a hack has not read any of his or L. Childs work. The Pendergast novels alone are some of best reads period. Your lack of knowledge is obvious because you can tell you only saw the Relic movie. Sad, your opinion has no merit. Know who Pendergast is Michelle? I mean, Micheal? Kinda what I thought.
Michael,
I disagree.
I find the Pendergast tales to be very entertaining.
Love that guy!
True, the film version of The Relic deserves a redo. I was no fan there. The book, however is fun and I’ll say straight out- It scared me.
I hope Douglas Preston continues to “Hack” it up.
I’m looking forward to the film version of Monster of Florence. The book interested me.
Are you always such a turd?
Well Michael, I’ve got to ask, Have you read any of his work? Douglas Preston is one of the best authors of our time. His books, Blasphemy, The Codex, Tyrannosaurus Canyon, Impact and Mount Dragon have been excellent. I understand if you don’t like certain areas of his work, but that don’t make him a hack.
Tell you what, go back and actually take the time to read his work, and when you understand it, then come back and say what you think.
By the way, I did read The Relic and Reliquary. I also saw the movie, which was not as good as the book. Of course, they took out Pendergast, hoe could it be the same. But the literature is good, maybe you should read it again.
It could be a great movie, but they didn’t solve the murder.
The fact that they didn’t solve the murder may make it even more compelling. It is strongly hinted who did it, thus the interviews these writers did with the guy whom they believed had done these murders. I can’t wait to see this.
Has Italy signed off on location filming? Can’t imagine it will go over well there. This story is highly critical of the way law is practiced in Italy and the competence, even interest, of Italian police in solving brutal crimes. Great story, though!
Michael, did you even read the book? And comparing the movie “The Relic” to anything related to the book is total rubbish. That movie was rancid. The book was just fine and the duo’s books have been in the top ten of the NYT bestsellers with every release. Obviously, your opinion is in the minority here.
Is AJ Maggot (Telly Savalas) still around? He could play Mignini’s part perfectly.
How many books have you wrote?
Read your sentence again, Grace. Your response was too damn funny not to be a joke.
Sounds like an interesting story, but they should cast a real actor, not Boy George, the male model.
The book is just utterly fantastic and no, I’m not the biggest fan of Preston’s work though “The Relic” was a pretty solid potboiler, actually. Though yeah, I bet they end around the “solving” of the crime (I, for one, believe they figured it out) I do wonder if this is going to get into all the Amanda Knox stuff and just how deeply corrupt Mignini is. In that same breath, I wonder how doing so would affect Clooney’s cozy Lake Como existence as Mignini has been pretty bulletproof thus far despite the neverending investigations into his abuses of power and the lengths he has gone/continues to go to convince his countrymen that his version of the events of the Knox case are true.
I think Preston does a really great job of showing just how much of a fucking lunatic Mignini is and why his failings in the Monster case have him so desperate to paint Knox as guilty.
Oh, and will they have a Thomas Harris cameo?!?
it was eight couples and they didn’t solve the murder. just fyi
George Clooney is perfect to play Doug Preston. Now, the question is, who will play the true ‘bad character’ in the movie.
An intelligent Michael(smth)
Imagine true crime/thriller writers becoming characters in their own true crime thriller.
Doug Preston and Mario Spezi running afoul of Prosecutor Mignini just a few months before Amanda Knox was targeted has one wondering if PM Mignini was out for revenge against ‘entitled’ Americans.
How many books have you wrote?
————————————————————–
Do you mean “written”? Judging by that sentence, you haven’t written or read much of anything grammatically correct.
I remember seeing the story of these two men on an episode of “48 Hours” or one of those true crime shows and was not intrigued enough to actually pick up the book to read it. In fact, I don’t think I even finished watching the show. I would imagine I would be loathe to pay $10 to see a movie about it. So, I suppose what I’m taking away from this story is that George Clooney is still making movies and he doesn’t seem to care which ones he signs up for. Guess it’s expensive living in that Villa in Italy!!
omgosh, this is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!! It’s an amazing book, and we all know good and well that Doug Preston will include what is happening to Amanda Knox in this! A MAAAAA ZING!
can’t wait to see it, but I must read it first!
“How many books have you written?” would be correct.
I read the book from cover to cover and loved it. Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks are great producers. George Clooney is a great actor and perfect for the part. I will resist the snarkicisms in the previous posts and wish the film makers well. It could be a great movie.
I am a Douglas Preston fan. However, I must state that even if I wasn’t, his book, “The Monster of Florence,” was a harrowing story. If I had never heard of Doug Preston before, I would still recommend that anyone considering even a holiday in Italy read this book before booking your flight.
THey probably signed on George Clooney for the part as there is a resemblance to the author. Douglas Preston is a very handsome man and a brilliant author.
The reason Preston & Child’s best selling series hasn’t since been brought to film is that the makers of the relic still own the film rights to the relic and ALL characters in it (including Pendergast), whether they were in the film or not. Because of this no other production company can make a film with those characters unless they buy the rights to the relic. So Pendergast is stuck in Hollywood limbo. A shame since his series is amazing (all NY Times Best Sellers).
Besides, NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT’S MOVIE!!
In fact the authors did more than just “strongly suggest” who the mass murderer is. Due to bizarre Italian law enforcement hierarchy, the Second Monster of Florence (Giuliano Mignini) staked his career upon there being a multi-generational Satanist conspiracy that had taken over the government and he refused to accept the evidence pointing to the actual murderer.
Everyone who is a fan of Preston/Child would like a better version of The Relic…one with Pendergast.
How about that–they did print your comments, Michael! Preston & Child are among my favorite authors. I’ve found very few authors that I enjoy enough to reread and collect. I always find something new every reading in theirs.
Yes a redo of the relic movie would be necessary, just add agent Pendergast
I am just reading the book for the first time. I’m on Chapter 3 and I can’t imagine anyone better than George Clooney playing Preston.
I can’t put this book down!
