Remember I told you that Fox was irked when Disney scheduled John Carter From Mars on the same release date as Prometheus? Today, Fox moved the Ridley Scott tentpole with Alien prequel DNA from March 9, 2012, to June 8, 2012. Not only is that a huge summer play date, but it’s the slot that John Carter From Mars originally vacated. I love a good dogfight between major studios. Ridley is scripting Prometheus with Lost‘s Damon Lindelof while 3D John Carter Of Mars is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fantasy series.
Meanwhile, Disney today scheduled Arrietty for a wide February 17, 2012, release. The animated Studio Ghibli production will announce its voice cast later.

One is a Pixar movie that has been done shooting for a year. The other is a Fox movie that hasn’t shot a frame yet. I wonder which will be (and do) better?
Does anyone else think that Prometheus is still going to be an Alien prequel, and that FOX is just trying to relieve the pressure of expectations so far in advance?
Prometheus is NOT going to be an Alien prequel, it will just have a few references to Alien. Look at Ridley’s filmography – he has never (or rarely) repeated himself.
Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood were repeats of Gladiator. Just sayin…
No there weren’t.
Not even close. (rather superior, IMO)
I’m still baffled by Disney/Pixar’s decision to move this high profile film to a late spring/pre-summer slot. Have the suits determined from a pre-special effects screening that this isn’t the second coming of Avatar as they had hoped? I’m really hoping this is more strategic scheduling than any indication of quality!
It could be that Disney realizes there’s money to be made during the winter and spring months, and they can avoid competition in the summer. “John Carter” is scheduled for the same March weekend release that “Alice” did two years before that — and the latter made $1B worldwide.
If “John Carter” can do even half that worldwide, then Disney’s move is a smart one. More and more studios realize that now.
Kerry, Disney wants to catch lightning in a bottle again, as they did with Alice in Wonderland.
smart move on Disney’s part. John Carter is an unfamiliar brand and could have gotten lost in the reboots and sequels shuffle of summer 2012.
Plus, it’s Andrew Stanton, who has made 2 perfect films. period.
What I want to know is, why is Arrietty being bumped all the way back to February of next year? According to Frank Marshall (who has been tweeting about the film for a while now) they’re currently recording the dub as of right now. There’s no way that, even with busy actor schedules, it will take them more than a year to record the voices. Additionally, unless they screen the film for at least a week in Los Angeles this year, moving the film to 2012 will eliminate a chance for Oscar consideration.
Having already seen the film (in Japan) I know this is one of Studio Ghibli’s best and has a far better chance at Oscar consideration/win than things like Ponyo or even Howl’s Moving Castle. Marketed properly, this could even be Ghibli’s biggest box office hit in the US, given the uncomplicated story, familiarity of the source material, and the absence of unfamiliar Japanese cultural references. Even the film’s songs are already in English (and not Engrish, but actual easy-to-understand English sung by a Western singer). Other than the fact that the characters have Japanese names, and that Disney will undoubtedly market this as being “from Oscar winner Miyazaki,” this is probably the only Ghibli film thus far that could be ‘whitewashed’ and released as just a regular animated film without the Japanese ‘anime’ stigma attached to it. So frankly, moving the release back like this (most people had been thinking August 2011 until now) is a devastating move which I really question. I do at least hope Disney will have it together enough to qualify it for Oscar and other award consideration so it has a chance of earning the recognition it deserves.
Has anyone heard from Marshall or anybody from Disney or Ghibli about why it is taking them so long to release this film??? It makes me impatient and angry to have to wait another year to see it, when all they need to do is record some English voices and voila! Or, better yet, how about releasing it in original Japanese with subtitles?
when will the release of Arrietty the Borrowers be?
