Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick has landed a major supporting role in J. Edgar, the Clint Eastwood-directed drama about manipulative FBI director J. Edgar Hoover that stars Leonardo DiCaprio. At the same time, Charlize Theron will not be playing the role of Helen Gandy, as was rumored. She’s signing on for Snow White and the Huntsman at Universal and Eastwood is now looking at Naomi Watts and Amy Adams as possibles for the Gandy role. As for Westwick, the British actor will play a clean cut operative with writing skill. Once Hoover discovers he can write, he conscripts Agent Smith to write Hoover’s biography, until Smith gets a little too close to the truth. The film’s produced by Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment and Eastwood’s Malpaso. The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer also signed on to play Hoover’s assistant and secret lover Clyde Tolson.

Extremely talented? Ed Westwick? You are joking right? I’ve watch Gossip Girls, this guy’s idea of acting is squinting his eyes and whispering his lines. He is a big joke and the weakest link on that show and that’s saying a lot. Wrong move Clint.

Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick are the strongest links on Gossip Girl. And I watch the show, so I know what I’m talking about. I always thought they would be the ones to grow and succeed post Gossip Girl and it seems they are going in the right direction.
Ed is the only actor who deserves to be on a huge movie among all the GG cast.He is too much for GG IMO.He is also theatre educated that non of the GG cast is.I guess you don’t watch GG or too jealous that you can’t stand his huge success.Suck it.

Ed Westwick.. I hate Chuck Bass, and I really don’t care about him as an actor. But I guess we should give the guy a chance, Eastwood certainly knows what he’s doing, if he thinks Westwick can act, then I guess we should believe him.

ed westwick is a great actor. The reason he “whispers”on gossip girl is because of the character he plays. As a brit he has to fake an american accent and his character is suave and mysterious and has a seductive edge to his voice, westwick plays the character perfectly!you critics obviously dont understand the charcter chuck bass which is why you think ed cant act… He is in fact a great actor and captures the darkness and the lost-boy/vulnerability of his gossip girl character very well, without him the show would be nothing.
No his character is SUPPOSED to be suave, mysterious, and sexy but he is NOT. He comes across like a 15 year old boy TRYING to be sexy by squinting his eyes, pumping up his chest and whispering. It’ beyond ridiculous and seriously LOL funny.
I dare anybody to go to the CW’s website, watch a few ‘Gossip Girl’ episodes (they are free) on-line and tell me this guy ISN’T a joke of an actor. The guy makes the twilight actors seem like Oscar winners. Only a 13-year old girl would consider that ‘acting’. If this is the only way he can fake an American accent then this movie is going to end up being a comedy, unintentionally. Maybe Clint Eastwood is getting too old and making mistakes in hiring.

So glad to hear that Ed Westwick got the role in the next Eastwood movie! He’s really terrific and now he’ll have the chance to demonstrate his acting talent.
Actually, Ed Westwick is an extremely good actor. He has played Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl really well considering he is English and that was his first major role. He has done continuously well throughout all his acting jobs, for example, Son of Rambow. He wasn’t a main role, however he played his role really well. He can go from one role to another and plays it out very well. In Gossip Girl, I could not of pictured it any better than the way he does it. He is meant to whisper his part etc because of the character, not because of his skills. If anything, this role he’s been given will bring out all his acting talent. I can’t wait to say I told you so.
He is an extremely BAD actor you mean. I’m a huge Gossip Girl fan, I watch it weekly and am mad about the show, but thruth be told, this guy’s acting sucks. The character of Chuck Bass is NOT meant to be whispering. I read all the books so I know for a fact that this is definitely not the case. Before you shout out that the show and the books are different: yes, but if Chuck was really meant to whisper all the time he would’ve done so since the beginning of the show. He talks perfectly normal in season 1. And what is this crap that you write about ‘considering he’s English’? So what? Are you saying that Brits can’t act? If you’re talking about the fake American accent: big freaking deal, anyone who calls himself a decent actor can do accents, if not, take classes to learn how to do so. I could not disagree more. And please tell me what “whispering” has to do with acting? Nothing really. His voice is raspy, his character commands attention and never raises his voice to get it. Do you ever have trouble understanding what emotion he’s trying to convey? He plays the entire spectrum and he’s way above the show. I watched the first two seasons of Gossip Girl and I knew he would go somewhere with his talent.
If he whispers all the freaking time to be in character, then it has everything to do with his character. Or do you think that Ed Westwick goes trough life whispering? No, watch some of his interviews. He whispers as Chuck. But actually I know why we disagree, cause the annoying whispering started in season 3. I liked him so much in season 2. Unfortunately, all he can do now is whisper and narrow his eyes while doing so. That is not brilliant acting, it’s downright bad acting. Anyone who knows a little about performing will tell you this. I think it’s amazing that Ed is going to be in such a huge movie because I like him, but I honestly hope that the whispering and narrowing his eyes will finally stop when he’s around DiCaprio.
That is simply not true; he “whispered” in season 1, as well. Every single time he propositions someone to get something he wants, usually women for sex, but sometimes he needs other things, he “whispers.”
Billy The Kid, I’m in full agreement . Yes, Ed Westwick is talented and unbelievably charismatic , and he oozes strong sex appeal. Ed is always cool and so damn watchable – he has so much potential for film stardom. I trust Clint Eastwood, Clint knows wonderful talent when he sees it. Eastwood hired Forest Whitaker for “Bird” , the unrecognizable Jay Baruchel for “Million Dollar Baby” , and Jessica Walter in ” Play Misty for Me”. Clint Eastwood is the man ! !

I’ve been heavily involved in the gossip girl fandom for some time now and I can point you to many, many times in which Ed was way out of gg’s league. The show is not well written, but please let’s not bash the actors for that. Also, his American accent is fake so that’s probably why he seems to whisper. IDC what ignorant people think but I am so happy that he landed an amazing role and I hope he does well for himself outside of gg.
I’m so happy for Ed. Someday he’s going to be a major star in Hollywood, I just don’t hime to get caught up in all the hipe stay true to your craft and choose good scripts that your passionate about.
How many of the people on this website commenting about Ed are actualy professional actors? Do you know how hard it is to perfect an American Accent? And he has perfected it. Anyone who says they could tell he was British is lying. He is way above Gossip Girl (even though I love the show) and Im so happy that he’s getting a brilliant chance like this. He is a very talented young actor, doing very well with the opportunities he has been given.
