HBO has passed on the comedy pilot Documental, from Tropic Thunder cohorts Justin Theroux, Steve Coogan and Ben Stiller. The project, written and directed by Theroux, was filmed in London. It stars Theroux as a documentary filmmaker who tracks down his idol, an equally inept filmmaker (Coogan), and documents his return to his craft. Stiller was among the pilot’s executive producers as were Theroux and Coogan. Last week, HBO picked up another comedy pilot, Lena Dunham/Judd Apatow’s Girls, to series. In addition to Documental, the pay cable network also recently passed on drama pilots Miraculous Year and All Signs of Death. Coming up: Armando Iannucci’s comedy pilot Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, which is gearing up for production, and the Diane Keaton starrer Tilda, which is still awaiting word on its fate.

Does anybody know what ever happened with SCAR TISSUE?
Yeah, it sucked. You know what didn’t suck though? “Gentlemen Of Leisure” by “Rescue Me’s” Evan T. Reilly and the Hughes Bros. That’s right, the pimp show that HBO was too pussy to produce. Trust me, if you can get your hands on the pilot script, it’ll blow your mind. Would’ve been the biggest thing on cable. Blew it.
To elaborate a bit: can you define sucked? Was the Scar Tissue script ever shot? Did they shoot it but it just didn’t come together well enough? Have been interested in this one for year+, am wondering if there’s anything more to it…
Coogan is flat-out brilliant…but no matter how hard he tries, it seems he’s never going to really break through here in America.
I completely agree. I ‘discovered’ Coogan while living in London and he’s the best.
This isn’t that surprising. The buzz for this pilot wasn’t that great, though it sounds better then some of the comedies they currently have on HBO like Hung and How to Make It in America which are two shows I tried getting into but can only call them “meh.”
I’m still surprised that HBO passed on both All Signs of Death and The Miraculous Year. With the talent both in front and behind those pilots (more specifically, in front for Year), you’d have thought that they’d be pretty much guaranteed pickups. But I guess, HBO’s realizing they have too many shows on there plate. Sure, they canceled some Gems in the past prematurely (Deadwood, Rome) but that doesn’t mean they need to keep meh shows on the air.
I’m also surprised that a decision about Tilda hasn’t been made yet. I mean, a show starring Diane Keaton isn’t getting an automatic pickup? Shocking… Veep sounds promising, though. I can’t wait to see Julia Louis-Dreyfuss channel her inner Sarah Palin for the part, it’s still a shame that New Christine got canceled, would’ve liked to have seen a farewell season for that show. Oh, well.
Wow, HBO making decisions about comedies based on the quality of the show instead of solely on who’s in front of and behind the cameras… perhaps they’ve finally turned a corner in their comedy development. who knows, maybe the broadcast networks will follow suit.
HBO should just remake “Lost Girl” and sex it up HBO style and it would beat True Blood. ABC is remaking Being Erica so it wont be that awkward
Theroux “wrote” Iron Man 2. Enough said. Good choice HBO
Yeah, and he also wrote Tropic Thunder, which was extremely well received.
What’s your point?
Coogan will break in America of one these days. I hope HBO finds something else for him.
Does anyone know where i can watch the Documental pilot? Many Thanks.
