EXCLUSIVE: Joaquin Phoenix is the front-runner to play the mentor who teaches the 16th President how to kill bloodsuckers in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for 20th Century Fox. Phoenix has met on the project and I’m told that it’s his if he wants it. He would join Benjamin Walker, who last Thursday was set to play the title character in the Timur Bekmambetov-directed adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel whose producers include Tim Burton. It’s an encouraging sign that the fine actor might be returning to form after a surreal detour in I’m Still Here, the mockumentary directed by his brother-in-law Casey Affleck that purported
to be Phoenix’s attempt to build a career as a rapper. While both Phoenix and Affleck initially maintained the docu was legit, they later acknowledged it was an artistic ruse. It was a waste of his considerable talent. From Gladiator, To Die For to We Own the Night and Walk the Line, Phoenix consistently turns in fascinating performances and this is a showy return role. The role is Henry, a mythic, ageless figure who turns Lincoln into an axe-throwing expert slayer of vampires. The pic’s produced by Bekmambetov, Tim Burton and Jim Lemley. Phoenix is cagey and could decide not to go forward. Stay turned to see if his deal makes. WME reps Phoenix.

I so enjoyed reading this book last summer and Henry was a great character. Phoenix could be fantastic. hope he’s more then just back, but better & ready to prove his critics wrong. think he has a ton of talent.
Glad he’s back. I missed Clefty.
Lost my respect for Joaquin. Erratic and idiosyncratic behavior is one thing, disrespecting your fellow actors and filmmakers (as he did in regards to “Two Lovers”) is another, and disrespecting your fans and audience with solipsistic and LeBron-level self-indulgent crap like his doc is another thing entirely as well.
I’ve enjoyed a lot of Phoenix’s past performances, but I don’t particularly enjoy the sensation of him pissing all over me.
He’s an actor. He was acting. You’re not saving lives or curing cancer, you’re performing, people are paying to see you act and you’re lucky to be in that position. So many people are not that fortunate to do what they love. Enjoy it, be grateful, focus on what you are doing and let him be. I’m glad he’s back.
And who the fuck are you might I ask. Get over it, it’s show business. If he pissed in a cup, you’d drink it.
I’ll just be glad to see him back on the screen again. He is a great actor and he has a personal life too. Get the hell over your stupid comments about his life, go outdoors and get one of your own. Quit relying on everyone else to live a life for you.
This sounds like it’s veering into so-bad-it’s-fucking awesome territory. Fingers crossed for Miley as Mary Todd.
Sometimes, it is not about you. His and Casey Affleck’s documentary was not very good, but it was also not an attack or insult on fans or moviegoers. If you worked on Two Lovers, I can understand your resentment. But if you’re just a random person upset that he pretended to be a junkie to satirize the media’s relationship with celebrities…then get over it, he didn’t piss on you and actors are allowed to do projects that don’t appeal to all audiences. Come on.
he will be back. he will take it seriously. he will be fine.
‘I’m Still Here’ was hilarious! One of the more memorable comedies from last year.
I thought I’m Still Here was pretty original and experimental and said a lot about the state of celebrity. What’s wrong with taking some risks to try something different? It may not have been the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it was also a hell of a lot more memorable than Two Lovers. I applaud both Affleck and Phoenix for injecting some art and risk into careers that could otherwise just be spent chasing the next big paycheck.
I hope that Joaquin Phoenix returns to his acting career and does movies again like he used to. It would be sad and disappointing if he doesn’t.
Whether or not the role or the film is any good, he should still do it. He needs to rebuild his credibility.
Phoenix was brilliant in I’m Still Here. Probably one of the best performances of his career. Yes, it was a performance and he should have been nominated for it. It’s a great film, and very clearly fictional and satirical if you pay attention to the details (Phoenix’s “father” is credited as “Tim Affleck” for Christ’s sake). Affleck and Phoenix should have never publicly come out to state it was fictitious, if audiences couldn’t figure that out they need to stay home and watch Sesame Street. “I’m Still Here” was the best thing to happen to “Two Lovers” and the investors, cast and crew of that movie know it. Phoenix doesn’t owe them any apologies. His conduct during the week of press for that movie hadno negative impact on it and his performance in the movie is unaffected.
I’m Still Here is on my top 10 of the year.
I think Joaquin could be a really good wrapper if he wanted to be… oh yall mean rap-rap?… OK never mind then.
A hoax to what end. Pheonix came across as the biggest asshole on the planet in still here. Didn’t think I’d come out of watching that hating him and loving puff daddy. As a piece of art, it’s a failure.
Richard Armitage should have been cast as Lincoln; he’s gonna be huge after Hobbit. These mashups are just not well written nor have they sold as many copies as people think; it’ll be Sahara all over again.
The hype may not translate to ticket sales, plus the screenwriters will have a time of it turning a Mad magazine gag into the actual plot of a movie.
Did you actually read the book? Because it was surprisingly well-written with a terrific plot. Could very well translate into a brilliant movie. One thing impressed itself on my mind when I read the book, that the author is no hack, and whatever gimmickry might have motivated his desire to pen the book, it was truly inspired in a dark and twisted way.
I see the appeal of this film. Teenage kids love vampires, and the only thing they love more than vampires is Abraham Lincoln. Straight off a five dollar bill and into a theater near you. The trailer for this film is going to be so awesome to see in a theater. I can’t wait for the reveal of the title at the end. The audience will go nuts: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Not a dry eye in the house.
I’m Still Here was the best piece of drugs and booze I’ve seen in a long time. He’s John Cash in my opinion. After you play him, you can do whatever the heck you want as far as I’m concerned. I’m glad he’s still alive at least. I’ll always support him, that’s a swell guy.
I haven’t read the book, but please tell me it’s lightyears better than the teen Twilight books. I think Joaquin could bring an edge to any role. If he does this, he’ll re-define the vampire genre.
I’m hoping Joaquin Phoenix does play the vampire hunter in Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter. I think he’s quirky enough for it. re:I’m Still Here. While I like the experimental part. Besides its only a movie. Whatever one thinks of it its time to move on.
Heyho. I found your cleftie comment hurtful. I was born with a microform cleft too. Am I a cleftie? Well at least you didn’t use the term harelip. You’re right Smeehi He’s got a ton of talent”
I think Joaquin is brillant, hard to portray Johhny Cash and actually sing, multi faceted as an actor. The psycho phase with him is over, hope he remains an actor.
It’s a good thing a camera crew has ever followed any of you dumb-asses around when you were going through anything in life. It’s sooooo easy to judge, isn’t it?
I don’t care about Two Lovers or the Documentary made, what I do care about is a person, it appears that knowbody cares about this man
I saw the docu that Phoenix did. I also saw all of his peers laughing at him after his time on Letterman. When a person is overcome by drugs, they are not sane. They are sick, and Phoenix is/was sick. He has a disease of addiction. The disease is who gave the Letterman interview. BTW, Letterman is a PRICK! It was the disease who was fighting with everyone in his docu.
Phoenix is a wonderful actor, who deserves forgiveness. If Phoenix were sane, he would not have been the prick that has been portrayed by the media.
I’m glad to see him back to his normal self, so to speak!
I love Joaquin
