(LOS ANGELES, CA) Michael Shannon, Benicio Del Toro and James Franco will be starring in THE ICEMAN, it was announced today in a joint statement made by Millennium Films and Bleiberg Entertainment.
Ariel Vromen (Danika,Rx) is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Morgan Land (Rx, The Point of No Return), based on the book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer by Anthony Bruno and on interview footage from the documentary The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer by Jim Thebaut.
Ehud Bleiberg is producing the film. Millennium Films’ Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Avi Lerner and Boaz Davidson are executive producing with Untitled Entertainment’s Laura Rister. Rabbit Bandini’s Miles Levy and Vince Jolivette are also executive producers. Bleiberg Entertainment’s Nicholas Donnermeyer will be associate producer. Nu Image, Inc., Millennium Films’ parent company, will handle worldwide sales.
THE ICEMAN is the electrifying true story of Richard Kuklinski (Shannon), a notorious mob contract killer and loving family man. He earned his nickname by freezing the bodies of his victims, disguising the time of death, and throwing police off-track. He was a man who used his tendencies toward violence and detachment from consequence to create an idyllic family life. His family and neighbors believed he was an average businessman, having no idea about his deadly alternate life. Kuklinski killed over one hundred people during his life. He never felt remorse for anything he had done, except hurting his family. Del Toro co-stars as Kuklinski’s employer, the notorious mobster Roy Demeo, and Franco plays his mentor assassin known as Mr. Softee.
“Our film is going to be fantastic. The story is riveting, the cast perfect, and all being directed by the talents of Ariel Vromen. We are pleased to be working with Bleiberg Entertainment” says Nu Image/Millennium’s Avi Lerner.
Ariel Vromen comments, “I am honored to work with such a talented cast on such a compelling story. Since the early stages of development I had the dream of casting Michael Shannon as Kuklinski, as I believe there’s no one else that can play this part better than him.”
“Richard Kuklinski is a remarkably vivid, imminently watchable character, as was evident from the real-life footage of him. I’m looking forward to working with Avi, Danny, Trevor, and Boaz on this film; Ariel is a tremendously talented young filmmaker who has poured his heart into this project and has a strong, artistic vision,” remarks Ehud Bleiberg.

could easily get shannon another oscar nod
and — wrong.
Luckily there are only nine producers of various title, so there won’t be too many voices pulling the script and shoot in different directions. I think twenty producers at least are needed to make a good film with singular vision.
Should do great business with such a sympathetic character to root for.
You can’t ruin this movie. No dramatic or creative license required. The facts lay out perfectly and work on their own. It’s every great true serial killer story meets every great mob hitman story to the Nth degree. This guy would give Gacy, Gravano or Ramirez nightmares. It’s going to be AWESOME!
A-Greed. I would LOVE to see the distribution of what each “producer” is contributing to the film. We all know Avi Lerner and Boaz Davidson are going to do what they do best: sit back and let everyone else do the work. Untitled entertainment manages someone, and in so doing, managed to ride the coat tails of this project.
This is what gives producers a bad name.
It happens every day, get over it. It’s how deals get done.
Charming idea – a nice, uplifting holiday movie for sure.
I thought Rourke was set to play Kuklinski or am I missing something?
This is so exciting! I can’t wait to see this film! Well done casting Michael Shannon!!! I love him!
“Since the early stages of development I had the dream of casting Michael Shannon as Kuklinski, as I believe there’s no one else that can play this part better than him.”
In other words, he was our 18th choice to play this part
Serial Killer + Avi Lerner!!! This is truly Hollywood on Satan!!
When will they get around to shooting this, I wonder? Not so much Franco with his Oscar hosting/nominee (probable) duties (whatever they turn out to be)that takes him until late Feb, and Shannon not only has a play Off Broadway ending at about the same time, but still has episodes of Boardwalk Empire to shoot (and when does THAT start shooting?).
Two films about Kuklinski are in the works…
Mickey Rourke will play Kuklinski in a film based on Philip Carlo’s biography The Ice Man, Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. The Hughes Brothers were set to direct but apparently that is no longer the case. What a shame. Mickey Rourke was born to play this role.
The Millennium version starring Michael Shannon is based on Anthony Bruno’s book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer.
Fortunately there are only nine producers of a variety of heading, so there won’t be too many voices pulling the script and shoot in dissimilar guidelines. I believe twenty producers at slightest are desired to create an excellent movie with curious idea. It should do enormous trade with such a concerned nature to root for. I loved this article. Keep on posting such very informative domain.
Hope they mention his childhood @ his brother Florian who was murdered by his dad ,was a family secret of abuse & murder covered up.Kuklinski was a timebomb waiting to go off..FOR THE RITE PRICE $$$
Love mickey rourke, but can’t picture him as the Iceman , just don’t see it. Michael Shannon is spot on. I’ve read the book and can’t wait to see the movie.
I’m thinking james galdofini would have been a better choice.
