ABC had been in negotiations for a 13-episode order to a medical drama set at a military hospital in Afghanistan to run in the summer. The deal for the Canadian/UK co-production has now closed with Daniel Petrie Jr. as executive producer/showrunner. The project, previously known as Combat Hospital, is of now untitled. It is being done with the same Canadian network partner, Canwest, and under the same low-cost financial model as ABC’s cop drama Rookie Blue, which surprisingly became last summer’s top-rated new broadcast scripted series and has been renewed for a second cycle. The new medical drama had already been greenlighted by Canwest with a 13-episode order. The series is being produced by Sienna Films and Artists Studios, along with Look Out Point. It was created by Douglas Steinberg (Psych) and Jinder Chalmers and is set to air in Canada on Global Television, the network that also carries Rookie Blue.

Now that’s a show that sounds BAD. There has got to be a better idea out there for a TV show.
Douglas Steinberg is a bad writer folks. He’s been trying to sell this for years. Can’t believe ABC bit.
Maybe ABC will call it “Return to China Beach” and bring back Dana Delaney.
I read it. It’s surprisingly good. Smart even.
Doug Steinberg has already been fired off this show.
They ARE bringing back Dana – buffoon!! Body of Proof – 3/29/11. Mark it on your calendar dude!
OMG OR MAYBE THEY WILL CALL IT HAWTHORNE AND HIRE JADA AND WILL
HORRIBLE
If it’s reasonably near as good as “Rookie Blue,” I think it should do well. While most of “Rookie”‘s success can be attributed to the fantastic Missy Peregrym, I was hooked on the show from the opening shot of the pilot right through the closing shot of the front 13, and I wished ABC had given it the back nine episodes. I thought it was that good. Granted, “Combat Hospital” is another world (or half a world) away from “green” blues on the streets of Toronto, it’s starting off with a good pedigree. I’m looking forward to giving it a try, and I absolutely cannot wait for Season 2 of “Rookie Blue” to start.
As much as you or ABC liked Rookie Blue it wasn’t up to ABC to bump it from 13 to 22 episodes. ABC simply bought US broadcast rights to the show; they didn’t order the series. Shaw Media and E1 Television only committed to making 13 episodes and selling rights to ABC was a bonus. If ABC wanted more then it probably would have cost the network a lot more than the $350K per ep they paid for the first 13. But there was no place in the schedule for more than 13 episodes, in either country.
And perhaps someone could let Nellie know that Canwest was bought up in a bankruptcy acquisition by Shaw last year. Canwest as a company is dead and won’t be making any more tv shows. Blame or thank Shaw Media for these and the likes of Lost Girl.
Dana Delany already has a project, and medically-themed at that — ‘Body of Proof’ — assuming ABC can get its schedule together to air the series. Delaying it ’til spring and THEN putting it against ‘The Good Wife’ seems less than encouraging.
