EXCLUSIVE: James Gray has been set to direct The Gray Man, New Regency’s adaptation of Mark Greaney’s thriller novel. Script was written by Adam Cozad, who also scripted the Jack Ryan franchise reboot for Paramount with Chris Pine and director Jack Bender. Targeted by a powerful multinational corporation, a former CIA operative-turned ultimate assassin must fight his way across Europe and past special forces teams from around the world in order to save the life of his handler and the handler’s family. New Regency’s Navid McIlhargey is steering the film and Shine Pictures’ Paul Webster and Stephen Garrett are producing. Webster produced Gray’s first two films, Little Odessa and The Yards.
The action terrain is something of a departure for Gray, who last wrote and directed We Own the Night and Two Lovers. He tells me he has a very specific plan to shoot the film that will distinguish it from past assassin-on-the-run thrillers like the Jason Bourne films. That is to have the point of view come from the assassin. He tried this style in the car chase scene in We Own the Night, where Joaquin Phoenix watched from the back of a car as assassins gunned down his police chief father (Robert Duvall). “Almost every shot was from Joaquin’s point of view, inside that car, and I want to make a whole movie with that POV,” Gray said. He’s a fan of Paul Greengrass’s Bourne films, but wanted a different approach than one Greengrass used so effectively. “What he did was a documentary-style objective approach, and he owns that style. I want to do the opposite, which feels like a good way to sympathize with a professional hitman. You humanize him by never distancing yourself from his experience. This story has emotional stakes that enable me to do that.” Gray, who’s repped by CAA, also has a smaller “personal” movie he’s writing. Cozad will do a rewrite on The Gray Man, and the film that comes together first is the one that Gray will direct next. Cozad’s repped by ICM and Gotham Group.

He would.
Tis seems to happen constantly, people forgetting that Doug Lyman directed the first Bourne movie, which really set the template for the next two movies. Why Greengrass always gets mentioned as if he directed all three is beyond me.
James Gray is one of the best American filmmakers working, well not working enough, today. I think this IS right up his alley.
James Gray is a pretentious hack. His films have little entertainment value, make little money, are lauded over by a small number of critics, and blatantly rip off all three Godfather films in more shots than can be counted. Joaquin Phoenix chose to self-immolate his career rather than properly promote Two Lovers. Good luck with this one.
Allan Parker, you are right!
Come on! No jokes yet about James GRAY directing “The GRAY Man”? This stuff writes itself!
Seems to me like F. Gary Gray should be brought on as a producer and Jennifer Grey should co-star. Alien Nation’s Gary Graham should also be in the cast.
What happened to LOST CITY OF Z?
Not who I’d have expected to do this. But he did do Little Odessa about another hit-man type character, so we’ll see.
Just what i needed, another movie about a former CIA operative turned ultimate assassin!
Exactly. Like we haven’t seen THAT before.
So…he’s going to shoot it like Gaspar Noé’s Into the Void?
The script is so bleh anyways. Another boring Hollywood hitman/espionage script. Whatever.
I love the book and I hope he just doesn’t screw it up, I better see it how I imagined it or I’m going to be pissed
What about Matt Damon? Think he’d be good in something like this.
What a waste of time and money. Gray is one of the most overrated director in Hollywood
I thought Mr. Gray was too much of an auteur to direct from other people’s screenplays and chose only to direct his own scripts. Guess he will ply his pretentiousness from only behind the camera and not behind the keyboard.
It’s a bummer that Paramount (or any other studio) would pony up the salary Gray wanted for The Lost City of Z. I was really looking forward to seeing what he and Brad Pitt would do with David Grann’s book. When you’re already talking about $150MIL to make a movie what’s another $5-10MIL? Instead we’ll probably get 5 more silly Nic Cage flix.
@ Steven, Allan Parker – you can always tell a tasteless jerk by his poor grammar and spelling. And also by his utter lack of taste. James Gray is an immensely talented and original voice in American cinema, and if you don’t see that, I pity you. That is all.
I can’t believe they cast Chris Pine, didn’t anyone actually read the book…
IMHO James Gray is one of the most intelligent, dedicated directors in the US. Ironic the name is the Gray man. I,m certain its a coincidence. I’m hoping Joaquin Phoenix and him can work together.
