EXCLUSIVE: After Javier Bardem’s terrifying Oscar-winning turn as the assassin in No Country For Old Men, is there any doubt he’d fit as the gunslinger Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower, the mammoth adaptation of the Stephen King 7-novel series that’ll span three movies and a limited run TV series in between?
I’m told that Bardem has officially been offered the lead role by director Ron Howard and Universal Pictures. While formal negotiations haven’t yet begun, there’s a high level of enthusiasm internally that they’ve got their cowboy. Akiva Goldsman has scripted the first movie, and will write the TV component as well. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer is producing with Goldsman and the author. Universal is financing and distributing the films, and NBC Universal Television Entertainment is backing the TV component, which will either be a limited run series or a miniseries.
It has been a heady week for Bardem. He received a Best Actor nomination for his performance as a terminally ill street hustler in the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed Biutiful, and Bardem and Penelope Cruz just welcomed their first son into the world. Since Deadline first revealed that King, Goldsman, Howard and Grazer were joining forces on the ambitious project that would tell the story on multiple platforms, speculation has been rampant over who’d play the lead role. Bardem has been mentioned, as has Viggo Mortensen and Christian Bale. Deschain is the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, and humanity’s last hope to save a civilization that will fall unless he finds the Dark Tower. At the time, Howard and Goldsman told me they saw the trilogy as their answer to the Peter Jackson-directed adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Instead of Middle Earth, the venue has an old West feel, which Goldsman described at the time as “an alternate Americana, one part post-apocalyptic, one part Sergio Leone.”
Bardem just wrapped the untitled next feature by Terrence Malick.
Howard plans at this point to direct the initial film as well as the TV component that will create a bridge to the second feature. The plan calls for the original actors to headline the TV version as well. The second film will pick up where the first left off. That would be followed by a TV installment that would be a prequel that introduces Deschain as a young man. The third film brings back the original cast once again return and complete the screen trilogy. So if Bardem closes a deal, he’ll likely appear in all three films and that first TV stint. Imagine’s Erica Huggins will be executive producer with Kerry Foster of Weed Road. Bardem’s repped by WME.

I will watch anything this guy is in. He’s first class all the way. Maybe Ms. Cruz can do a cameo and kill two birds with one stone.
if cruz is in it she can be in the TV series that flashes back and play susan delgado
Susan Delgado is blonde amd 16 years old dude. Cruz ain’t anything like that.
Maybe Cruz could play Mia?
But we never actually “see” Mia. She’s just a facet of Suzannah’s personality.
ok, first of all suzanna is black in the book….
\
Also, Mia is NOT a part of Susannah. Methinks some rereading is in order as well.
We certainly do “see” Mia. And she is NOT a part of Susannah’s personality. Reread Song of Susannah.
susannah hard to figure for myself but, when I seen they were considering naomi harris (pirates of the caribbean witch) BRILLIANT!!! Never would have thought of her but, very good choice
maybe Cruz can play Rhea
Agreed
or maybe saorise ronin could play her she should be that age by then
Yea saoirse Ronnan she is beutifull, explendid, charming she would be exellent at it
susannah is also seen in the final book when roland and eddy are on there way to see john cullum for the second time when they go start floating in his truck on the road
love her…she is my pick for Susan Delgado too.
taraji p. henson as susannah
dax shepard as eddy
saoirse ronan as susan delgado
chris lambert or willam defoe as the man in black
and with jake idk im most confused with him so Jake T austin.
Dax Shephard as Eddie, c’mon. That would be crap.
Zoe Saldana as Susannah!
Dax Shephard as Eddie? You have to be kidding. You must be his agent as no free thinker would ever place him in that role.
Mia- Sophie Okenado
Eddie- John Leguizamo (or at least thats who i pictured at the time, might be outdated by now)
jennifer hudson as susannah
james woods as maerlyn (“ageless stranger”)
gary sinece as the man in black
betty white as rhea of the coos
tim allen as the voice of blaine the train
clint eastwood as marten broadcloak
Flagg should be played by the one that played him in the stand.
Jared Leto(Paul Allen)as Eddie would be money
willam defoe as the man in black would be a ripper!
Dax as Eddie? could work if this world was not the real one where we all drank Nozz-O’La and drove Takuro Spirits. But seriously, “UrbanGunslinger” said that Tim Allen would be the voice of Blaine the mono and thats ridiculous.the only person who should play Blaine is the person who has played him before:George Guidall. Dont know him? well thats because you have not listened to the Dark Tower series on CD! I fully recommend it if you have just read the books and stephen king endorses it too!
Willam Dafoe would make a great man in black!!
rite on!! Cruz would never work as Susan Delgado!!
Thank You!
If Cruz plays susan, I will go on Dark Tower strike. By no stretch of imagination would she be right. That is just plain lazy casting.
I have to agree here….I’ve read the series 3 times, and there is no way Cruz would work as Susan Delgado. Susan needs to be young and blonde….
i have been thinking that Stephen Moyer from True Blood would make a good Roland, instead of Javier Bardem. Don’t get me worng, he;s a great actor but i don;t see JB as Roland.
no she cant susan delgado is like 14 years old
She’s too old to play Susan
ANY FILM ! I will watch! I loved him EVERY TIME!
Javier is a good actor, but he’s not quite Roland. Viggo is perfect for the part, or maybe guy pierce wouldn’t be bad.
Has anyone even considersd Jim Caviezel for Roland? Tall, slim, blue eyes, perfect age, somewhat haunted look. When I first read the books he’s just about what I pictured in my mind’s eye. Nothing against Javier Bardem, I think he’s one of the greatest, just not Roland.
how about Adrien Brody as roland just a thought throwing it out there.
just a thought, its already been cast
Im 44 yrs old and have read the entire series well over 7 times. In the past few years I have leaned towards vigo, however after just finding this site and reading all you true blue fans’ choices I had a flash….Peirce Brosnan, mature RS,of course. Waddayathunk?
Please don’t think anymore.
i saw adrian brody as more of an eddie charater. but clint eastwoods son would have been perfect for a young roland. since the charater was based on clint.
I am all for Adrian Brody playing Eddie Dean!! My friend and I had a long debate about this I am so glad to see that someone else agrees!!! haha I have a hard time picturing anyone for the cast of Roland, besides the one i imiagined in my head! I wonder if they are gonna ask Angela Basset to play Susannah? King said thats how he pictures her.
oh my God james cavaziel would be so perfect!so much better than javier bardem!to the people who think he’s a good choice, uhhh did you really even read any of the books,or did someone just tell you about them?Javier Bardem as Roland is total disrespect to the whole thing and HERESY as far as i’m concerned
james caviezel it is too beautiful for a role of Roland
James Caviezel is waay to pretty boy for Roland! Has anyone seen the preveiw for aliens vs. cowboys? Daniel Craig hits it on the nail…
Jim Cavaziel would be perfect as Roland!!! I had never thought of him as Roland, I’d always thought Viggio Mortenson would be Roland, but I watched Cavaziel in “The Count of Monte Cristo” the other day and I realized that he would be a great Roland!!
I too agree that Jim caviezel would be a perfect fit!! Glad to hear others think so too.
Woo hoo! Another vote for Jim. He is my first choice. Javier is sooo wrong. I would want to go on strike if he is chosen. Great actor, but not Roland.
Jim Caviezel is such a better match as Roland. Viggo Mortenson would be awesome too. Someone posted Mia was black because Susannah was; wrong. Mia was a white skin, brunette woman. Susannah even asks Mia why she is white when their “connected”. Mia was a demon/spirit, she was chosen by the Crimson King and his cronies to be Mordred’s mother. Susannah was just a vessel. Oh, and Dax Shepard or John Leguizamo, wow! Eddie is a young (early 20′s), white dude with a serious heroin addiction when he is introduced. That role should be given to an actor with serious skill, he has to be funny, serious, and at times deadly.
Hell yeah! I agree! JB is not Roland. How many times in the book are roland’s blue eyes mentioned? I hope they don’t make too many changes to the characters. Jim Caviezel would be perfect. Hope he can dance!
I can definitely see Guy Pierce as Roland. He’s got the acting chops if Memento and L.A. Confidential were any indication.
The person that I always invisioned as Mia when I read the books is that Shawnee woman that played in “The Stand” and in the “Saw” movies.
Shawnee smith… she is a good fit for Mia- sexy and insane at the same time!
I agree Vigo would be a sick Roland to a point, but I think that Javier definitely has the square jawed kicks some ass type of look though., and as far as Eddie goes, I would have to say the lead actor in a show called the The “Black Donnellys” his name is Jonathan Tucker and is kinda what I saw when i read the books.
Viggo would make a really good Roland…no to Guy Pierce.
OMG I totally agree. Viggo is meant to play this role not Javier whoever. We all (nerds of the dark tower) did a poll for the characters of this series and viggo won!!!!!! Yes clint eastwood is too old for the role now although the character was created in his image, but he should still have a part in honor. Javier doesn’t even have blue eyes!
Viggo for me would be perfect..Javier is good but not Roland.
My sister and I think Viggo as Roland would be the better choice. Personally Clint Eastwood would be perfect but I believe he’s much too old for the part. Of course, what Hollywood can do with make-up he just might be able to pull it off.
I agree, Viggo would be perfect. I don’t see Roland as being spanish…
I completely agree with you.
I agree, Viggo would be perfect for Roland!!
Viggo could definetly work as Roland! But one that worked for me the second time I read DT was Mark Harmon. Now now now… Be nice! One thing that caught my eye was: what happens when Roland smiles. And thats’s what made Mark Harmon work for me. He can look tired, old and spent. But when he smiles, he shines.
I agree Viggo would be perfect as Roland. I have read the entire series and I have listened to it a number of times on audio. I even have the comics. Viggo for sure.
Javier Barden has nothing of Roland. Roland has a special charisma and light blue eyes! Many Fans would prefer Clint Eastwood, but he is much too old know. I would prefer Hugh Laurie, because he has the right eyes and this cold behaviour.
If Paris Hilton can pull off blue eyes (with contacts) being that in reality she is in fact a brown-eyed girl. I’m pretty sure bardem can pop in some blue contacts and look great the transition would be easy since he has light brown eyes already. Eye color is the least important and easiest feature to pull off in Hollywood.
I`m Agree!!!
I agree with Mark, a younger Clint Eastwood is exactly how I pictured Roland. Hugh Jackman would be the best current actor who I think could pull it off.
Hugh Jackman would be great, He’s really got the dangerous and intense stare (X-Men). Just use some makeup and age him a bit.
a Young Clint Eastwood WOULD be perfect… I think it can be done… Look at what they did with Jeff Bridges in Tron… dude looked 20 years younger…
Stephen King based the character on Clint Eastwood…
Javier Bardem just wouldn’t work…By the end of VII OLAN is just so whiped out from carrying Sussanah/Patrick. bardem is just too thick.
I have to agree that my first thought of who would play Roland is Eastwood…of course the age thing makes that an impossability. Throwing Hugh Laurie into the ring has really got me thinking now..I could actually see that as a good matchup. as for the others I really need to think about that some more.
I like the thought of hugh Laurie as roland.. I think he has the rugged good looks and features to pull it off nicely.
Hugh laurie would be much better suited to play flagg, he doesnt have the darkness to play Roland.
yeah right on dude
Hugh Laurie isnt viewed as to serious an actor because of the House series
Exactly!!! Roland is Clint Eastwood all over! That is who I have always pictured!
Cruz would be crap in the movie
OMG
What a huge pile of crap this film is going to be.
First…..
Roland Deschain is a tall, skinny, WHITE man with striking blue eyes and Clint Eastwood features. NOT a 5″9 latino man with dark brown eyes.
May as well cast Eddie Murphy as Roland if your going to cast Bardem.
Second…..Ron Howard is taking all of us die hard King fans for idiots if he thinks we’re all going to sit by and idly watch this happen. Who else is keen to toilet paper his house?
Javier’s not a “latino” male. He’s hispanic, and yes, there’s a difference. Even so, there ARE plenty of white latinos.
actually Roland isn’t “tall”. Skinny, white and blue eyed, but he is not very tall (despite what Wikipedia says). I actually think the hardest part for Javier will be the skinny part…
Eddie Dean say Roland is “Long tall and ugly” Read the books man.
Roland is 6’3″ (diclosed when he meets with Daddy Mose in book VII)
Even though Roland is white, he did spend years in the desert chasing after the Man in Black. I’m pretty sure that when Roland got to Tull, he had turned the color of a latino!
I agree with TPing Ron Howards house.
I was so excited at the idea of a dark tower movie, now i just feel sick.
I will not be watching.
Ron Howard you are a douche bag.
We should start a petition to get Viggo Mortensen the role as Roland, because I agree with you, I feel like this guy didn’t even read the series!!!!
Thank you Rowan!
Roland is a white guy tall and skinny..and way well aged. Clint could play Roland s father Steven Deschain. Daniel Craig..no way he is about 4ft 10 in tall.
Viggo is about only actor physically so far.
The rest of the cast would fall into place with the RIGHT Roland!
Opie: please listen to your potential audience!
I just recently purchased the ‘Dark Tower’ series and am presently on the 5th book of the series. From the beginning I have pictures Roland as Timothy Olyphant of the series ‘Justified’ and ‘Deadwood’. I also envision Eddie Dean as Michael Weatherly or Chris Pine.
Viggo would be a better choice for Roland.
I like Bardem but Viggo is Roland Deschain. He’s the closest to Clint who is Roland. Maybe Viggo doesn’t want to do it. It’s going to be a long commitment. I can see Zoe Saldana but you’re right Taraji Henson can pull off the personalities of Susannah and she can sport a mean afro and she has the southern dialect. I can see Cameron Diaz as Susan Delgado. I don’t have any ideas for Eddie or Jake…Have to think on it.
Cameron Diaz as Susan Delgado? REALLY?!? I seriously doubt anyone but an idiot would believe she was a 16 year old? Did you even read the series?
viggo is roland
Nope bro,im pretty sure its not..Did I missread the article?I pretty sure it said Bardem got the part..Why is every person giving their opinion on who it should be?
Just bc he got offered the part doesnt mean he has to take it…
If they can’t get Hugh Jackman, it’s Timothy Olyphant (with blue contact lenses) all the way for me.
I have read all the Dark Tower series of books several times. After watching Justified starring Timothy Olyphant, there is no doubt he is Roland. The hat, the guns, the walk, the talk, and the draw. He is perfect for the part. Even the physical description of Roland fits him. Stephen King always has a say in his movies and as one of his biggest fans I hope he steps up and chooses Timothy Olyphant for the part of Roland. It is almost like the part was written for him.
I totally agree with Sharon. Timothy Olyphant would make a great Roland. I don’t think they should cast him as Hispanic. One of John Sandford’s books was made into a tv movie and they cast a black guy to play the main character who was suppose to be white. The movie fell flat on it’s face. Fans want what was described in the book. JMO
in the book there are people wearing sombreros and they all had accents eddie thought was weird and no where did it say roland was white. i have faith this movie could be amazing, either that or it will be shit. but i gotta have faith.
Barden has also been offered a role in the new bond film as well as god of war in clash of titans sequel..Guys got alot going on..this is def not a sure thing
While I agree that Javier Bardem is a good choice, the first person I thought of as the gunslinger is Viggo Mortenson and everytime I reread parts of the books his face and persona come to my mind.
Roland live in Italy…Roland is KIM ROSSI STUART…really!!!
does anybody know how to find out about casting for this film? who, when, where?
Dakota Fanning could be a good Susan Delgado . The story of her and Roland as teenagers will have to be an R rated movie, as far as im concerned.
Who will play 15 year old Roland?
ya good idea. who is the girl in little red riding hood? i think a young roland would like to spend a summer with her.
Its weird for me as I pictured Javier Bardem as Eddie. I think Javier would make a great Roland, but he MUST wear blue contacts as Rolands electric blue eyes were so mezmering.
wonder who will play Jake, and what are they gonna do for Oy?
Aaron Paul would be make a fantastic Eddie. He plays an excellent junkie and cleans up nicely to!
yes aaron paul as eddie thats what im saying. i was thinking bardem could pull off roland i mean hes a great actor, but last night i saw him at the academy awards and hes not roland sorry. to short, chubby face, cubby body, round ass? come on roland has no ass ol long tall and ugly, we must not forget the face of are father. when do we know if bardem takes the part?
I have read all of the comments and given the fact that I too have read the Dark Tower Series , I just hope that they keep within the boundries of the story. I am sure Ron Howard will so such a job. He is an AWSOME director. But DEAR GOD do not cast Justin Beber as young Roland.
Beber
Good choice for Roland but I can’t wait to see the tv series and film, regardless of who’s in it.
I am saddened that Clint Eastwood is soooo old too old to play Roland I always pictured Roland looking and SOUNDING like Eastwood. I guess Javier is good. Still sad about Eastwood ha ha
I think that casting Bardem in Dark Tower would be as much of a mistake as Tom Hanks in the Dan Brown stories which I loved reading but left me completely disappointed as movies. I know that I am not the only one who felt that way. Mind you, I love Bardem, who’s a very good actor, but he’s just NOT thew gunslinger. This part screams for Viggo Morgenstein. Apart from Eastwood, he IS the only Gunslinger possible right now. Anyone else would play a part. He would BE the part.
Not Javier. Love him, but he’s no man of Gilead. Strangely, I am drawn to Dylan McDermott. I am not a very big fan of his work, but it’s in the eyes. Picture those baby blues under that hat!
My God , HOW OLD ARE YOU PEOPLE?
A Spaniard as Roland? Howard must be desperate to get an A lister for the lead. Javier is great, but he cannot be Roland. I have been reading, and re-reading, these books most of my life. Roland is a white man. He is tall and thin. Javier cannot shake his accent. Hes also too soft to play the hardest character ever written. How dissapointing.
javier would NOT be the best choice roland should be done by viggo mortensen and noone else!!!!!!!!!!!!
every since I heard about the movie idea I thought and thought who would be roland MOST important character and I could only think of viggo
thats becouse your an idiot.
Javier Bardem is a great actor, but wrong for the role. My vote is still on Dolph Lundgren as Roland. Tall, blue eyes, cut and aged, deep voice. Javier can play Roy Depape or Jack Andolini.
Sorry, he’s the wrong guy! I’ve been reading these novels since I was 20! Clint Eastwood was always meant to be Roland, but now that he is just too old, Timothy Olyphant of Deadwood and Justified is the most perfect choice left! He’s got the cowboy act down pat and looks great in a hat! He even has the cowboy swagger!
Whatever Ron Howard touches turns out great. I love that this series has so many bad guys.
Roland- Javier is ok/ Ralph Fiennes/ Alexander Skaarsgard/
or
Eddie- James McAvoy (think Atonement/Wanted) Ed Norton Fightclub think of the transformation from a drug addict to a killing machine
Susan Delgado- Rachel McAdams (young looking but passion and emotion)don’t freak out
Kiera Knightly
Walter- Cristof Walz, Willem Dafoe
Susannah-Odetta NOT HALLEY BERRY! But I like the idea of the gal from the Pirates of the caribbean movie
There has to be a part for Christopher Walken or Gerard Butler?
Let the comments begin!
Gerard Butler could play the tick tock man perfectly. Goes from calm and logical to homicidal at the blink of an eye. Christopher Walken is too distinct an actor I think. He just doesn’t have a great fit in the story. How about John Malkovich for The Man in Black/Richard Fannin/ Walter O’ Dim?
Michael Fassbender as Roland, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Eddie, Zoe Saldana as Susannah, for bad guys, Javier Bardem as Walter O’Dim, Tom Wlaschiha-game of thrones assasin as the man in black (1st book, the sorcerer)
Bad Ass
I was more interested when Viggo Mortensen was attached. Javier is okay, but not quite the right look/age for Roland. Not to mention, still don’t like the idea of Ron Howard directing. He’s lost his touch for directing films.
You’re just jealous you’re not involved.
What a stupid, petulant comment, Justin. Making a critical assessment doesn’t mean someone is jealous – that was a very valid post. I happen to think Bardiem is a great actor but the project is already doomed anyway with Akiva Goldsman attached – the worst screenwriter in Hollywood.
You mean Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman? We are talking about the same one, right? Watch A Beautiful Mind again, and remember that great movies don’t happen by accident.
Academy Award winner or no, Goldsman is also the man that wrote Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, The Da Vinci Code, and Angels and Demons. I defy you to tell me that fact doesn’t raise the hairs on the back of your neck when we think of him taking on The Dark Tower. A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man are two shining credits on a resume of mostly mediocre-to-plain bad movies. This movie could also be in much better directorial hands (Frank Darabont, Darren Aronofsky, and Clint Eastwood come to mind). Casting is also eh. I actually love the choice of Javier Bardem, but the rumors that Jennifer Carpenter is in the running for Susannah are just ludicrous. As much as I’m pulling for it, this series is being set up to fall and fall hard.
Totally agree!! I LOVE this series and I feel like they aren’t doing it justice. I think Viggo Mortensen fits the character WAY better. I think Stephen Moyer would be good too. Javier Bardem is an amazing actor, but he isn’t Roland Deschain. And why Ron Howard? Why not Christopher Nolan?
This is disappointing! Javier’s accent will kill the western drama of this series. I was excited but now I’m losing it. Craig Daniel I thought would be great. He looks the part in “Cowboys and Aliens” coming out later this year or next year… Maybe Javier could the the vioce of Oy though!
1. If you read the whole report, it just says they offered him the part, not that he accepted it.
2. You just said Javier’s accent would kill it, and then suggested a British actor?
3. With Stephen King acting as overseer, you have to have faith that this will be worth seeing.
4. Anybody else think Lucas Bryant would work for Roland?
have 2 agree with your point that sk will not let his baby be ruined by anyone. and if anyone tries to ruin it he will have the strength of character to tell them where to go, and get the right team to do it as it should be done!!
Lucas Bryant has been my pick from the start. Relatively unknown too which is a bonus. They could easily age him a little bit.
Everything about him fits in my opinion. Yay Lucas.
what about liam neeson as roland? (ol long tall and ugly)
Yes you are exactly right here.I have been watching Haven on Fox and this guy is Roland all over. This guy has the walk, the build and the facial features as well. Most people picture Eastwood in their minds when reading about Roland, you can not get any closer than Lucas Bryant. He seems to have the acting ability to pull it off as well.
I love Stephen King, as an author, but… every time he has a hand in his movies they are awful. He is my favorite author, ever, but his films are terrible. The only good ones are the ones he didn’t have much to do with, for example, The Green Mile, Dreamcatcher (Timothy Olyphant was in this and would be a great Roland), the original Shining. If they do not get the right cast and a better director the whole project will be trash. Roland is a Tall, Skinny, White guy, with faded denim blue eyes. Gilead is much closer in mind to Ireland/Scotland than Spain or Mexico. I have read these books 8 times all the way through and if they don’t do what Peter Jackson did for Lord of the Rings, then there is no point in ruining my favorite story ever by watching some ridiculous movies.
P.S. Want an example of a movie with Mr. Kings hand in it just think of Desperation, or that awful re-make of the Shining; I shudder.
I agree with Lucas Bryant! Started watching Haven and that was one of my first thoughts about him. Personally, I don’t think he’s that attractive, so he would make a great Roland
lol
Why is everybody so set on Viggo in this role? It’s so cliche. I think Javier will be perfect. His accent is so subtle and unplaceable that it totally fits somebody who wasn’t raised on “regular” americanized english. Who knows what accent somebody born into high speech would have? Why couldn’t it be the subtle, somewhat scary one that he affected in No Country?
or perhaps Daniel Craig? ha.
That comment about Bardem doing the voice of Oy is priceless! Made me laugh out loud. I loved Bardem in ‘no country for old men’ but can not see him as Roland. Christian Bale would be a better choice. Cazieviel would be great too if he loses the innocence and toughens up a bit.
ACTON
I have always been an avid dark tower fan and have always felt that viggo would play the perfect Roland, I see I wasn’t the only one
I had forgot about Viggo. Yeah, I think he could pull off Roland.
I agree totally about Viggo Mortensen. I’ve only just started reading the books, and must admit I can totally see him as Roland, even as I’m reading them!
here is my ultimate list of cast members for the dark tower movie:
Young Roland- Jake Gyllenhaal- I know he is a lil old for young roland but I think he could pull it off!
Roland- Daniel Craig- he looks the most like Roland in my eyes.
Walter/man in black/marten-???
Cort-Colm Meany or Michael Chiklis
Stephen Deschain- Robert Patrick…anybody remember him??
Cuthbert Allgood-Joshua Jackson
Alain Johns-???
Red-Haired man- Robert Englund
Alice(Allie)- Jennifer Garner
Jake-? not a very hard decision here
Sylvia Pittston- Glenn Close or Christine Baranski
This is the cast for the First Dark Tower movie assuming Howard follows the narrative of the books. So I only included the characters in the Dark Tower 1: The Gunslinger. tell me what you think!!
+1000
He is perfect! excited to see how this comes together
Totally see this. Finally…somebody in Hollywood is thinking as well as being creative at the same time. I hope Akiva does justice to this.
Bardem’s got the look in a lot of ways, when he’s not too thick in the face.
But I’m really worried about his accent. It may be a distraction.
Imagine Roland’s speech to the assembled folken in Wolves when he details the claptrap of their “plan” to the people. The content of that speech is important, as is so much of what roland says.
Crossing my fingers.
The accent won’t be a problem for him. He’ll get past it.
Javier has said he cant shake his accent. It will ruin the movie.
Roland has an accent! He can’t pronounce all of the english words properly.
‘Tooter’ fish instead of tuna fish. ‘Astin’ instead of aspirin.
Also, in Wizard and Glass, Mejis is akin to a mexican town.
It’s not an accent. They are different but similar words like the different but similar world he lives in.
Yes, but Roland does not have a Hispanic accent. I realize that Mejis was modeled after Mexico, but see this…see it very well…Susan Delgado was a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl. How many of those do you see in Mexico? I think Javier Bardem would make a good Roland, but he will have to overcome that accent. Also, they’ll need to get him some really good contacts to make his eyes the sun-faded blue that Roland’s are. That is one thing that CANNOT be compromised on. Also, Sam Elliot would make a good Roland. Penelope Cruz could play Mia, but she will also have to overcome the accent and have blue eyes. I’m very excited to see how this comes out.
Actually there are quite a good number of people with blonde hair and light colored eyes in mexico and throughout latin america. They have mostly european/spanish ancestry and not so much native american.
Javier Bardem is european not latin american. He’s from Spain not Mexico.
@Anonymous — Actually you CAN see blonde and blue eyes Mexicans for ex. Anahí, Edith González, Belinda Peregrín, Ines Sainz, Ludwika Paleta, Ana Patricia Rojo, Aracely Arámbula, Laura Flores, and Altair Jarabo among many other actresses/TV personalities of that country.
Honestly that depends on your boodline. People tend to think of Mexicans as only being either the Mestizo or Native but actually, if you are of the Castillian class, you definatly can be blue-eyed and blonde hair.
BTW: Viggo would be a good choice.
Yeah, Sam Elliot WOULD be a good choice for Roland, but since he doesn’t seem to be in the picture, I still have to go with Viggo. Roland has some monsterous sized boots to fill. casting the wrong actor for his part could make or break this project.
I also like someone’s idea for Willem Defoe for Walter. He would be perfect.
IMO, this is King’s crowning achievement. I would hate to see ANY of it done less than whole-heartedly. To me, it needs to do as much justice to the books as Peter Jackson did with Lord of the Rings. Quite a daunting prospect, to say the least.
Actually, I envisioned Sam Elliot playing Jonas from ‘Wizard and Glass’, so much so I think King may have been thinking the same when he created the character. Plus, Sam Elliot would get to play a villian, something he hasn’t done since… hmmm, not sure actually…
In “No Country” Javier did fine with the accent. He didn’t eliminate it completely, but it was not obviously hispanic. Such a strange-but-not-quite-identifiable accent would work fine for Roland. That said, I hope Viggo or Bale (who the NYP is calling front-runner) get the part.
Sam Elliot is too old and Christian Bale is too old!
Hey I had forgotten Sam Elliot. He definately could pull off the part of Roland.
“Tooter” is not a word to replace “Tuna”… it is actually what Roland’s people called that type of fish. Kind of like “Nozalla” is their word for “Coka-Cola”.
Viggo would have been perfect, but Bardem is an amazing actor, and I’m sure he’ll do a great job. I’m concerned about the length, though. 3 films and a tv series to encompass seven massive books, and the comics? I wonder what they’ll cut out.
Beats one movie.
I think I’m the only one who doesn’t like Viggo for this role. I thought his acting in LOTR was terrible. Also, he has girlish features. Roland Deschain is not girlish. He is no pretty boy. Bardem has the perfect look. The book doesn’t say Roland has an American accent. In-World, where Roland is from, has elements of ancient England (ie. Arthur Eld is based on King Arthur), as well as America and Mexico, so if Roland had a British accent, or a Spanish or Mexican accent, it would not deviate from the books. Roland’s world has “moved on.” It’s like a sponge, soaking up a myriad of different cultures, meaning he could have any number of accents and it wouldn’t be considered a deviation from the books.
no you’re not the only one! i’m sorry i think viggo has a low-budget look and talent, and would instantly turn people off. i don’t know who should play roland but i don’t think viggo should and i don’t think it should be javier either. i’ll see the movie either way and in fact just started reading the series when i heard it was going to be made into a movie. i’m almost finished “wolves of the calla” now. HOOKED.
@Richard Fannin… But you think bardem has the right look? He looks rugged to you? Watch “The Proposition” w/Guy Pearce and tell me that’s not Roland.
@Richard Fannin… Dude, it’s not about how much you can fudge the details and work the work the situation however you want. The fact is that Roland is going to have the accent that King himself thought of as the voice of Roland. He’s not going to ruin his largest creation with actors that don’t fit the roles he created.
I agree!
@Amber… They’ll cut out enough to make this yet ANOTHER terrible film adaptation of a great Stephen King accomplishment.
Agreed, but I’m hoping it’ll be different.
BTW has anyone considered Paul Bettany as Roland?
Perhaps Howard will channel Willow and The Missing and NOT The Dilemma and Parenthood?
It’s really hard to define that Ron Howard aesthetic and apply it to this classic King saga. However, I think Howard is capable of shocking the fuck out of everyone on this…
I say he should channel A Beautiful Mind. It’s possibly the best film he’s ever made, and the mind-screw/what-is-reality aspect is somewhat similar to some themes explored in The Dark Tower.
Not bad, not bad. Jeffrey Dean Morgan would also make a great Roland.
I seriously thought they were the same guy!
Can they get someone without an accent for Rowland? Javier is great, truly great but doesn’t seem quite right for this. Hopefully he will be too busy with his new family to take on the part. Remember they grow up fast Javier! lol
But don’t you SEE, the accent is a good thing. VIggo has one too. He is from a different world. I don’t think he would seek perfect american english
I agree. I think it is totally believable for Roland to have some type of accent. With all the Arthurian refernces, and old western feeling, I can see it. He wouldn’t sound like us, that is for sure.
Roland should have some type of accent, I agree; however whatever it sounds like shouldn’t be Spanish, English, American or anything else you can hear day to day all he needs to be is understandable and sound like he grew up speaking something very foriegn.
‘Someone without an accent’? I’ve never heard anyone like that. Perhaps by ‘without an accent’ you mean ‘with an American accent’?
Bardem’s gravitas is overbearing. I’ll pass.
I just hope they don’t give the role of Susannah Dean to anyone other than Naomie Harris. After watching her in 28 Days Later, Dead Man’s Chest and Small Island, I know she’ll do the phenomenal justice to the character. Girl’s got range.
Give it to Thandie Newton. She’s tiny and has been WAAY overlooked in Hollywood.
Yeah I just saw her in Vanishing on 7th st. and she would be perfect. She’s very attractive and a hell of an actress.
Susannah will be the hardest to cast in my opinion. It has to be an actress who can play what amounts to four distinct characters (I’m counting Mia even though in the books she barely speaks through Susannahs mouth, which translates to screen acting, The actual actress will hopefully, for sheer shock value and thought provoking, be a white gal)
“The actual actress will hopefully, for sheer shock value and thought provoking, be a white gal”
Thought provoking? Making the character white wouldn’t be thought provoking, it would be a bad comedic skit from SNL.Someone get Tina Fey on the phone, The Dark Tower:Ghost of Me, Myself, and Latoya is calling.
Wow, really??? That has got the be the stupidest thing I have heard yet in regards to the Dark Tower cast. Susannah be white? A strong black woman is WHO SHE IS… what the hell is this about ‘shock value and thought provoking’?? The character of Susannah (and thus Detta, Odetta, and Mia) is based on her life experiences in the time she came from, that is part of what makes her who she is. Her whole story is centered about the racism she endured in the world that she came from, and being a wealthy black woman in a time when that pissed a lot of people off. I really can’t see where you’re coming from with this.
I could not agree more…they CANNOT make her white!!! Have they read the book…her background!
OMG! MIA IS WHITE!!!! Susannah is black. Mia is not Susannah, or one of her personalities, she is an entity from the spirit world. She takes Susannah’s body hostage, but that does not mean they are the same character! Read the books thoroughly for heavens sake before you post idiotic banter. Roland is also white, S. King said he fashioned the character after Clint Eastwood “long, tall, and ugly”. Gilead was fashioned after King Arthur’s realm, not old Mexico. Roland is just in the Southern deserts while following The Man in Black, (Merlin, once again King Arthur, not Spanish or Mexican!)
In my mind when they originally mentioned the series as a movie, I always pictured Zoe Saldana to be perfect as Susannah. She’s beautiful, a good actress, and if she pulled the whole Detta/Odetta thing correctly, she could go to the Oscars. My money is on her.
naomie harris all day… she looks exactly as i have always pictured susannah. i could definitely see her pulling off the role with grace.
I could definitely see Naomie Harris as Susannah.
Did anyone here actually read the books????? Javier is a good actor but he is in NO WAY Roland. This f ing bites. I wait a decade for this crap? Opie should not be allow to cast his movies. Ruined the Da Vinci code with Hanks. I can not understand one word that Bardem says. What a freaking WASTE.
Right on! I was so disappointed to see Tom Hanks in the Code. I still can’t watch it to this day. I hope he does not ruin it for The Dark Tower fans!
hes a better choice then bale for sure
Yes!!!!!! Out of him Viggo, and Bale (the reported frontrunners). He’s gonna pull Roland off far better by leaps and bounds. People griping about Roland’s physical attributes please just think for a second. They make colored contacts these days and actors slim up for roles all the time. It’s their job. And Bardem Is veeeeery good at his job. By far the only actor with the depth that could pull Roland off. Bale could do it (though not as well) but Viggo trying to pull it off is laughable. Bardem was born to play Roland. Now if we could only get Akiva away from the script we’d have a masterpiece. Unless, that is, your a big fan of the writing in Batman & Robin…
Don’t forget Fringe, you know that show about strange beings, mysterious coincidences, repeated symbols and alternate realities. Let’s not forget Akiva’s other work.
Thomas Hayden Church, the voice, the blue eyes, they can make him look very crusty and sharp without much help. Also, dudes from Texas.
Akiva also writes for Fringe. which is a well written show
I would like to send my sincere congratulations and best wishes to a very beautiful and talented couple during this magical time of the birth of their son. In addition to their great professional accomplishments and there are many to celebrate…Nothing will compare to this time of pure joy as they welcome their new son into their lives. Again sending my best wishes of great joy and much happiness to Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.
Roland is supposed to be older, skinny and have piercing blue eyes. This guy has none of that, THIS IS GOING TO SUCK!
I agree with you, bardem it’s nothing like roland, even with blue contacts we know it’s won´t work, at least to the one who had read all of the books, but maybe Ron wants to get succesfull by getting a Oscar winner actor, it might work for other people who doesn’t know the books but if he goes like that he’s going to kill our hopes for the movie we were waiting for.
Roland Deschain is over a hundred years old. The age of the actor is not a factor in this since they can make young people look old in movies, right. And contact lenses and a diet will take care of the rest. By the way, if Stephen King has faith in Ron for his Magnum Opus, well so do I.
Totally agree
Absolutely agree. I truly doubt King would be on board with a team that was going to destroy this series. He waited for years for the right people to come along. Can we not crucify anyone at least until the first movie comes out? And I’m sure that whoever ends up playing Roland will be right. After years and years of reading King and reading about him, I have a really hard time believing that he would just sit back and say, yeah, eh, whatever, just make it happen. He saw what the “wrong” team did to The Shining, and hasn’t let it happen again.
CLINT EASTWOOD IS FIRST CHOICE ROLE MADE FOR HIM.MAYBE HAVE SOMONE ELSE PLAY A YOUNGER VERSION,BUT WHO?WHOOPIE GOLDBURG AS SUSAN.THE BLONDE GUY OUT OF STARSKY AND HUTCH COULD PASS AS EDDIE CRUZ AS MIA JAKES A HEADSCRATCHER HOWS DANIEL RADCLIFFS AMERICAN ACCENT?AND ON THE POTTER NOTE,MAYBE RALPH WHAT HIS NAME,VOLDERMORT,AS THE MAN IN BLACK.ANTHONY HOPKINS TO REVIVE HIS ROLE FROM,’HEARTS IN ATLANTIS’? MILEY CYRUS AS SUSAN DELGARGO.
I will soooo not watch this movie no matter how big a fan I am of the books if Miley Cyrus plays Susan. You’ve got to be kidding me! I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Whoopie Goldberg! Miley Cyrus! You are a joke sir and Clint Eastwood is eighty years old. Come on and get real. I have to beleive this man can kill me before he dies himself. The person who is cast as Roland needs to be someone who like Eastwood can act without speaking. Roland doesn’t have a whole lot of dialogue but what he is thinking can be read in his face. I always thought an unknown actor would be best for this part.
AGREE!
If Opi Cunningham thinks he has his lead man.. He needs to read the books.
He’s a great actor, but he is not right for this role. Roland was made in the image of a young Clint Eastwood and I don’t ever remember reading about him having an accent either. You never know, they might know something we don’t, but I’m not sold just yet.
Someone finally said it. I always picture Clint Eastwood when reading the DT series. Clint would have been PERFECT. I sometimes thought of Jack Palance in City Slickers, but I found out he passed away in 2006.
inspired by clint eastwood, not image of. i recall jake seeing a poster of clint and saying they look nothing alike exsept for the blue eyes.
NOOO!!! This guy is not a good actor (if I can call him an actor). Another actor would be better than this one. If they take him, not only they will make a bad movie but that the movie will be a failure. I hope that this new be a joke, and that the makers think a little and choice another better actor.
Dude, if you think Javier is a bad actor, you clearly know absolutely nothing about acting. He is at least a A- actor. And again the accent is a good thing, different world, different speech. He is better than Viggo too. He was good in LOTR, but check his other stuff, just ok. He is a B- actor
He was good in The Road.
If Clint Eastwood is too old than Viggo is perfect. Think of his role in appaloosa, and when you first see him in LotR at the bar, that IS Roland. Also he is an amazing actor with great range, his performances in History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and The Road were all very impressive.
totally agree about viggo in lotr and can soooo see him as roland. how about whoopi goldberg for suzanna – ref her performances in the colour purple and ghost – she has depth of character for all 4 personae and ***she’s black***
Yeah, except that the movie was “Hidalgo”.
I love LOTR and Viggo, but I just don’t know. Nobody really fits outside of Clint Eastwood of 1970′s vintage.
I also love (I mean really love) Stephen King novels, but Mr. King’s history with film making – including his cameos – illuminate for me why his genius lies firmly in the literary realm.
viggo would be the perfect person for the part he has the eyes
I don’t think anyone had mentioned it, but I thought Daniel Day Lewis would be perfect for the part. Roland is tall and lanky, like a young Clint Eastwood, I don’t see that with Bardem.
Very much agree about DDL!
I think DDL would be perfect for the man in black/the walkin’ dude/marten/etc.
He does creepy evil so well!
Daniel Day-Lewis should play Roland’s father, Steven Deschain.
Daniel Day Lewis as Roland’s father is the BEST suggestion I’ve heard in regards to the cast. You obviously know the books and graphic novels. Thanks for that. WE CAN ONLY HOPE the film makers will be so inspired.
What a great idea! There is no one more intense
Agreed. Didn’t think of him.
And what about the girl from The Golden Compass for Susan?
what about the girl from red riding hood for susan?
Fantastic Actor and love his body of work….BUT I have to say pass on this role. I just can’t see it. Not for Roland. He’s been described too well by King to try and pass Mr. Bardem as The Gunslinger. Viggo or Bale would be better choice to at least match up look and range of capturing Roland.
As for the accent if the final word is Bardem is Roland then they would probably say its how he speaks from the High Speech.
I was thinking Scott Glenn, he HAD the look but is a little past the look now…
Wish they’d take someone who looks more like the Roland. I’d have choosen him to play Cort or Flagg, but Roland himself? Please god no.
Does anyone noticed he doesn’t have blue eyes? Roland has them and they’re his most popular trademark, Mordred has them too, and of course that’s a reference to clint eastwood and his deadly look. So come on, don’t screw this… All constant readers of king that had read all of the Dark Tower mythos would agree with me.
There exist magical tools which can change the colour of an actor’s eyes. They are called ‘contact lenses’.
contacts almost always look cheezy and fake. only someone with true piercing blue eyes could do the role justics, in my humble opinion. bardem is no doubt a good actor, but i am just not seeing roland in him.
Hey Paris Hilton’s blue eyes don’t look cheezy and they’re contacts!!! Bardem has light brown eyes he passes the none-cheezy blue eyes i’m pretty sure
BLUE EYES… THOMAS HADEN CHURCH as Roland…
Edward Norton as Eddie
Rosario Dawson as Susannah
Really agree with Edward Norton for Eddie. I think he is utterly perfect for the role.
I can see where you are going with Rosario Dawson for Susannah but I think there are far better choices out there; Zoe Saldana, Naomie Harris, even Halle Barry.
But, Thomas Haden Church for Roland? You Serious? There is no way I could ever see him playing Roland. He may have the typical “cowboy” look to him, but that is all he’s got (he’ll always be Lowell Mathers on Wings to me)…Roland is akin to leather that has been dried and oiled over years and years…he’s got depth. Javier has that “feel” to him…although we have not seen him in a role to prove this for sure, I think, once he puts those sandalwood revolvers on his hips there would be no doubt that he is Roland. IMO
I would like to see a real black person as Susannah. Rosario Dawson nor Zoe Saldana are even African American.
Angela Bassett for Susannah…hands down! She would kick ass
I vote Viggo! Javier Bardem doesn’t look like Roland. When i was reading Dark Tower series, i always imagined Viggo’s face and figure as perfect Roland. I have no problem with Bardem, but i think he doesn’t fit this role, so pls ponder about it.
