EXCLUSIVE: Though it hasn’t yet been shopped to studios by Media Rights Capital, Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 followup Elysium is looking better and better. He’s just gotten Jodie Foster to commit and join Matt Damon and District 9‘s Sharlto Copley to the sci-fi film he wrote and will direct as his next project. Simon Kinberg is producing. Plot is being kept under wraps. Foster most recently completed directing and starring alongside Mel Gibson in The Beaver, which Summit Entertainment will release April 11. Foster is also starring alongside Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly in God of Carnage, the Roman Polanski-directed adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play. Foster’s repped by ICM.

Blomkamp is the new Nolan.
Put down the crackpipe buddy…
I’ve never seen a crackpipe buddy. I am not from your sick society buddy…
Honestly I think he is the first of a new breed of directors that has the right and the respect as well as the caliber of work to not have to be compared to additionally great directors. Cameron and Nolan are individually epic storytellers and innovators in their own right. Blomkamp should also be given the opportunity to not be compared to anyone but himself. I realize it’s done all the time; but let’s let Blomkamp do what he does best and that’s be the best damn director he is meant to be, and not compared to someone else.
I think hevus actually far superior to Nolan. Extremely complete and balanced filmmaker for this day and age. Great instincts. Total MVP.
What an idiotic comparison to make. Blomkamp’s made one movie so far, one that as far as I’m concerned was a happy accident because it spoke to the times we’re living in. Blomkamp also has an entire different background than Nolan, and was basically chosen as Peter Jackson’s protege. Not exactly the pedigree of Nolan-like auteurs.
What about Duncan Jones? Or Joseph Kosinski? Hey, both of them did sci-fi films. Kosinski and Blomkamp were both involved with the Halo commercials, doesn’t that make the former more likely to be the next Nolan as well?
In conclusion, don’t try to sound smart or witty with these idiotic comparisons. Nolan is the next Nolan; there is no foreseeable replacement.
Am I the only one who thinks Nolan…is kinda tedious?
I’m not trying to be deliberately contrary. But I really found the Batman films and Inception to be bloated and…well…boring. I DID love the Prestige, but man…every scene between the actors in Inception was them trying to explain to the audience what the hell was going on. And by the end I was exhausted, certainly, but not emotionally. I was just tired of the gimmick. The Town, conversely, I found legitimately moving. So Nolan may be the next Nolan, but he’s solidly on my “wait and rent” list now.
your are being contrary. And you are tedious. Nolan is super talented. Let it sit there.
“The Town, conversely, I found legitimately moving.”
Are you serious? I didn’t care about any of the characters in THE TOWN. It was basically a rip off of HEAT, without the well written characters or superb directing.
No offense, but maybe Nolan’s movies are too smart for you.
I was enthusiastic, but you are mean and boring. which is worse?
I fall asleep during your third sentence so don’t try to sound smart with these idiotic essays.
So wait.. you’re going to call the person explaining that you’re an idiot an idiot, too? Without explaining? Wow, fail troll is a fail troll. Don’t give me sh*t, fanboy. We all know you were trying to start crap with stupid predictions like this. So if you don’t want an essay, then how bout this simple suggestion? Go home. Just go home, boy. Before you get hurt. And if you think more than one paragraph is an essay, well.. lol, your mom needs to send you to night class.
There’s another director involved in the Halo commercials: Rupert Sanders (British director attached to helm Snow White and the Huntsman). And he is most likely to be the next Nolan.
I’m with you on Duncan Jones. Joseph Kosinski is by the numbers. 8 words: Tron and The Black Hole starring Hayden Panettiere.
Auteur? LOL
Excuse me, but how is a man who directed two BATMAN movies an “auteur”?
Is that supposed to be a joke?
And “Inception”, as elegantly shot as it was, ripped of “Dark City” and “Dreamscape” whole cloth.
Give me a break. There hasn’t been a truly great new filmmaker since Paul Thomas Anderson made “There Will Be Blood” and shot everyone out of the water.
Oh for God’s sake can we cut out the “Next” crap and just celebrate the fact that an intriguing project that isn’t a reboot, remake or rehash is moving forward?!
Has anyone seen the script? This is shaping up to be one hell of a cast!
Thank you! I was beginning to think I was back in grade school…
Nice addition to the cast.
Any hints about the storyline? Elysium has some historical meaning:

Enjoyed District 9. Looking forward to this one.
Re Nolan, apples and oranges. Nolan rocks and thus far this guy does as well.
Blomkamp isn’t the next Nolan (completely different film makers) but he could be the NEW James Cameron. By that I mean when Cameron made films based on good ideas and concepts instead of just visual tinsel.
uh, Cameron has NEVER made a film based on good concepts and ideas…
Oh, c’mon. Terminator, True Lies, The Abyss. Those were all great concepts with fantastic ideas.
these are remakes
Your wikipedia skills are lacking. Only True Lies is a remake.
Um. What? Did you just say that “The Terminator”, “True Lies” and “The Abyss” were “remakes”?
What are you talking about? They were original films with original scripts, not based on anything at all. What the hell are you babbling about?
Great to see the incomparable Jodie Foster starting to act more now. She hasn’t made a movie in three years! She always takes breaks between acting, but I’m glad she’s working with more interesting filmmakers and material. She has a juicy role coming up in God of Carnage with Kate Winslet and now this movie with the director of District 9? Sounds good to me. I hope she has a good role in it.
seriously…jodie foster needs to stop acting. we’ve reached the point of diminishing returns with this woman. she does one thing very well. she’s won two academy awards doing that one thing (strong, scared.) and she needs to stop already. it’s become tedious. and any other character she attempts to play is absolutely laughable. please get the directing hat back on, ms. foster. that is where your career needs to be moving. i also believe directing would be your money train if you’d simply stick with it. please, spare us the hack acting.
She’s a good actress. What role has she played that you find tedious? You’re opinion is fine but spewing hate is what is truly tedious.
Jodie Foster and Matt Damon…Box Office poison.
Yeah, those “Bourne Identity” movies. What flops.
What are you smoking?
And Jodie Foster has never sought to be a “blockbuster” name in movies.
@ h:
Jeez, that’s one big-ass ax you got to grind against Jodie Foster. She didn’t thank you profusely enough in line at Erewhon’s when you said you loved “Silence of the Lambs”?
I think we also have to face the reality that Jody Foster is too old to connect with younger audiences. Even Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie are apparantly too old. Plus she has alienated people as she has aged. For example, I didn’t like it when she gave her fans the finger by not participating in Hannibal. Still, I wish her good luck.
Actually after the film came out I heard alot of people say she was smart to stay away from that movie. Hannibal was terrible and whoever that character was up on the screen was not Agent Starling from Silence of the Lambs.
I’ve gone around sites and I have seen many people comment on how happy it is to see Jodie get back to some good projects with great filmmakers. So I’m not quite sure what you’ve been seeing or hearing.
What I’ve been seeing and hearing is, for example, going to Angelina’s movie, Salt, and seeing no teenagers and very few college aged people. Going to see The Tourist and seeing no teenagers and no college aged people. Angelina is only 35 years old. Noting that How Do You Know, starring Reese Witherspoon as the female lead, bombed at the box office, especially compared to expectations. She will get another chance with Water For Elephants, but don’t expect any young people to be there for her.
There seems to be a changing of the guard in Hollywood, with older actors having lost their clout with younger audiences, and younger stars still being developed. So it will be exiting to see what young stars break out and succeed. But putting an older actress onscreen to get some older people to come to your movie is a bad business plan. Let’s not pretend this worsening trend is not happening.
“For example, I didn’t like it when she gave her fans the finger by not participating in Hannibal”
So an actress not acting in a sequel is disrespectful to her fans? Where do you people come from.
God forbid someone commited the sin of aging. lol. If she alienated people by not taking on Hannibal, why were her films Panic Room and Flightplan that came after #1 movies for two weeks in a row sold solely on the strength of her name? People underestimate Jodie Foster’s star power because she’s so low key, but a lot of people love her and have for years. Put her in a thriller or intelligent sci-fi flick and she’s golden.
I also detest the attitude towards women ONLY because they commit the sin of ageing. Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, and Julia Roberts (with Eat Pray Love) seem to be doing quite nicely as they age.
Oh please. Give me Jodie Foster over any of those overexposed no-talent tabloid tarts like Jennifer Aniston or Linday Lohan any day of the week. This sounds like it could be an interesting film and enough with the Christopher Nolan comparisons as well. He’s over-rated and has terrible body odor.
Ignoring the whole Nolan debate…
This is great. Love Jodie and enjoy Damon, so I will be seeing this movie, whatever it maybe about. With two great actors like this, everything else can fall in line.
U guys are some snarky lil bitches…Why do u go back & forth insulting one another, criticizing Filmmakers who have OBVIOUSLY done more with their lives than u pathetic lil bastards, & trying to make yourselves sound Superior?
I agree with Ella: “cut the ‘Next’ crap”! Nolan is Nolan & Blomkamp is Blomkamp…both are great in their own right…Quit trying to compare them…I’m looking forward to BOTH their future projects…
I hope Die Fokken Antwooord gets involved with this project.
District 9 was overrated as a film.
What else would it be rated as? A toaster?
Um, guys, I think the idea behind this post was to note that Jodie Foster was joining the cast of Blomkamp’s next movie. The whole Nolan/Blomkamp thing reeks of firth grade. I for one always find Ms. Foster to be an intelligent actor. I would much rather watch her read the phone book, than have to sit through a movie made with, well, most of the female actors making movies today. And seriously, are we really discussing that she is washed up because younger audiences don’t connect with her. Younger audiences flock to movies with vampires and transmogrifying robots, so I’m not sure I can take that argument seriously. That’s all.
The point of the argument is that Elysium is not only going to lose money at the box office, but squander an opportunity for exposure for a younger actress. I have nothing against Jodie trying to make a living, but Hollywood has a problem with not enough younger stars, and putting Jodie in this movie is not helping. If you told me you went to see The Tourist, and How Do You Know, this Xmas, then I might cut you some slack. But the odds are that you didn’t, as reflected by those film’s grosses. Yet you can bet that younger people support their choices. Will you commit to seeing Jodie in both The Beaver, and Elysium so she can continue to get parts? Because you can bet that younger people are committed to seeing, for example, Miley Cyrus in both L.O.L. and So Undercover. And they are committed to seeing Justin Bieber in his concert movie, and any other movie he chooses to do.
Ehhh – Bloomkamp did VERY well with District 9, boxofficewise. And I don’t remember any “hot”, new Hollywood-names drawing the crowds there?
Do you simply think, that instead of hiring actors and actresses that the director believes would fit his characters/story, he should hire “young hotties” to draw crowds? I certainly hope not….
And do you think (know) that ONLY Matt Damon and Jodie Foster will star – or what part/character Jodie Foster is meant to play? Do you honestly believe, that the only factor when it comes to box-office succes is young “hotties”? Then you certainly don’t understand ANYTHING above the world of movies – I could start reciting recent films with great success, WITHOUT (thankfully) following your simpleton-logic, but I’m sure you can think of plenty yourself, if given the time
Oh, and by the way – I recently watched (amongst others) The Kids Are Allright and Salt – and I certainly don’t think it would’ve made the films better (or drawn larger crowds) if Miley Cyrus had been given the lead in either
‘heat’ was well written? are you kidding me? the supposedly great scene between de niro and pacino was so lame. pacino saying ‘i will take you down’ and de niro shrugging, jesus it stunk.
Blomkamp is way better than Nolan… I don’t care if Neill has only made one film, District 9 is better than all of Nolan’s films, combined.
Nolan is a hack, for real. He’s nothing more than a PG-13, kid-friendly, studio bitch… when was the last time he needed less than $100 million to make a film? Better yet, when was the last time he made a film that wasn’t compromised DUE to its budget? Blomkamp managed to make a sci-fi action film with tons of quality CGI, while using less than a fraction the budget than Nolan uses.
I don’t understand why people are even comparing the two filmmakers. You can’t compare them. They are nothing alike. Compare District 9 to Memento…both good first films, but that’s as far as it goes. They are nothing alike.
Memento wasn’t Nolan’s first film. It was Following.
You’re embarrassing yourself. Complaining about the budget of Inception is ridculous considering the film was wildly profitable.
District 9 was good up until it became a tedious action fest in the second half.
Nolan is extremely overrated, I agree.
He’s an elegant action movie director. Yes, his action films are more intelligent than the average action films. But he’s an action movie director. He directs Batman movies. “Inception” was basically a remake of both “Dark City” and “Dreamscape”. Take a look at the folding city in “Dark City” and tell me he didn’t rip that off whole cloth. Yes, he’s an elegant director, and yes, I enjoy his movies – but he’s an ACTION MOVIE director. That’s what he does. These idiots comparing him to Stanley Kubrick have got to be five years old, or just people desperate to find the next great director.
You want a great writer and director? Paul Thomas Anderson. If you want to see the last truly great film of the last 20 years, see “There Will Be Blood”.
He made District 9 with roughly 30 million with no known actors it was a great movie, I hope he can back it with a good cast and budget now.
Despite my better judgment, I’ll jump into this fray.
Love Christopher Nolan’s work, and love Jodie Foster. But her decision to hire her friend, the toxic Mel Gibson, has torpedoed her latest effort, “The Beaver.” And she hasn’t been given a decent enough script in about a decade. As talented as Ms. Foster is, women of a certain age do not often get good opportunities in Hollywood. (Jessica Lange, Rene Russo, Michelle Pfeiffer, though older than Foster, are pretty much M.I.A.)
I don’t get out much anymore, and I’m sorry to admit that I don’t know Neill Blomkamp’s work. Such is life.
Blomkamp has directed ONE(1) film. It showed potential and that’s it – for now. I want to see what he can do with an A-list cast and get a few more films under his belt before I compare him to any director or assign “greatness” to his name.
Im glad someone said this. For awhile their I thought I was reading about belittling and comparing Nolan to everyone else. Instead of a District 9 sequel/Jodie Foster article.
Elysium – should be crazy. Can’t wait.
