EXCLUSIVE: Katherine Heigl, not Halle Berry, will be the one smooching Jon Bon Jovi in New Line’s ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve. I’m told Berry has dropped out of the picture, which is just getting underway. Heigl was available because she recently withdrew from Adaline, a film that was supposed to shoot in March from Lakeshore and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Her reps said Heigl, who recently adopted her first child, didn’t want to go back to work right away. New Year’s Eve is the perfect job then, because it’s a true ensemble that won’t require a long production commitment from the actress. Heigl had been in early talks for the original film, the Marshall-directed Valentine’s Day, but a deal was never consummated. Losing Berry is a blow, but Heigl’s certainly a draw in the romantic comedy genre. The Garry Marshall-directed film stars Robert De Niro, Sofia Vergara, Russell Peters, Hilary Swank, Ice Cube, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Josh Duhamel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Abigail Breslin, Seth Meyers, Jessica Biel and Til Schweiger. Mike Karz and Wayne Rice are producing.

Didn’t she refuse to do Valentine’s Day because they weren’t offering her enough money? And then Julia Roberts took the part Heigl was supposed to get?
Roberts’ role in Valentine’s Day was by far my favorite, especially at the end. The one and only moment in the film I found even remotely surprising and moving.
I’m so glad Heigl didn’t take that role. She is one of the most vile, disgusting people in Hollywood. And that’s REALLY saying something. I literally can’t sit through two hours of her face. My seeing this movie just went from a “maybe” to a “no f!@#ing way”.
Do you know why Berry dropped out? Scheduling conflicts?
Break up drama with Gabriel Aubry; Berry had to drop out due to court dates with her ex to arrange custody for their child.
Berry probably left because she knows the film will be crap.
Right – because Berry has such a discerning eye for quality material, as evidenced by Frankie & Alice and Perfect Stranger.
You can tell that Berry really tries to find quality material. Frankie & Alice wasn’t great, but it gave her a chance to act. I’ve read from several sources that Perfect Stranger started out as a much better script, then got destroyed by either the director or editor, I don’t remember which. New Year’s Eve really didn’t seem like a worthwhile project for her (though she could definitely use the exposure, like everyone else in these movies).
Do you know why Berry dropped out? Scheduling conflicts?
My guess is that she read the script or saw Valentine’s Day…
“Heigl’s certainly a draw in the romantic comedy genre” ???? Based on her last two, “Killers” and “Life as We Know It”, I’d say that sentence is losing its steam. And yes, everyone knows she bailed on a very healthy offer in “Valentines Day” only to have a more meaningful movie star accept the role. After damaging herself in every interview by shitting on everyone (Apatow, the writing staff of Grey’s, etc), this girl better find a great acting role in a mid-sized film with a meaningful director and prove she has talent, because her like-ability factor is questionable.
Life As We Know It did ok. $53m on a $35m budget – over $100m worldwide. Certainly compared to most of the rom coms this year at least it made a profit. Witherpoons bombed, Hathaways and Gyllenhaal, McAdams etc etc. It has been a bloodbath for the genre.
ok, so there’s a reason for not seeing this now. Ugh
Katherine Heigl is incredibly gorgeous and voluptuous. American perfection doesn’t get much purer than her.
She was born here, but her parents are German. Hence why she is so stacked and not some skinny shapeless random looking girl.
I love her. People are comfortable with hating her for whatever reason, but I think she is a good actor, and hot.
Why are girls with big breasts, skinny legs, no hips or behind considered curvy/voluptuous? Must be a white American thing.
Anyway, this movie has dead on arrival written all over it. I’ll invest my $11.00 thank you very much.
Does anybody knows if Adaline still gonna happen or the project is dead after Heigl’s departure? Would’ve been nice to see Angela Lansbury, who was supposed to play Heigl’s daughter, on the big screen again.
Does not matter… as I have no desire to see this film in the theater, on cable, on dvd or anywhere else except if it is the ONLY film on an airplane…and, then, a good book sounds far better.
It remains truly inspiring to watch Katherine Heigl constantly challenging herself as an actress and continuing to pursue meaningful roles in high quality films.
Kudos to Heigl.
It’s sometimes hard to read sarcasm in print, but I’m going to assume that you’re joking here.
Heigl has charm that is lackiing with most romantic actresses. Kate Hudson became too cutesy and wantonly, Aniston just seems cold onscreen and never seems to give anything. Reese is better in drama than romantic genre. Jennifer Garner coulld be good as she has natural charm and endearing quality but she is better is kick-ass roles because it offsets her sweetness.
Rachel MacAdams is naturally good too and enjoyable to watch.
Romantic comedies have got to get back to making the audience feel good. Give us some romance dammit!
Oh, DeNiro. What are you- how can you- have you lost your- oy. Oy.
Get ready to see Russell Peters career in movies & tv skyrocket.
His comedy earns him north of $10 million a year and his worldwide following is a force.
Hollywood is just waking up to figure this out.
His standup tours are good, but nobody outside of Canada has bought his albums/DVDs. Look at the Nielsen numbers for Red, White, and Brown. They’re paltry.
Paltry because nearly all of Red, White and Brown and his other stand-up DVD were leaked at one time or another online and on youtube, where he has over 35 million views.
That wasn’t a typo – 35 MILLION VIEWS.
And there was virtually no promotion for the DVDs.
When a proper P&A budget & studio gets behind him and the right project, it will be an international cash cow.
you are a good agent for russell, because no one in America, and i mean no one, knows who he is and in an ensemble like this, likely never will… good luck selling him to this bunch.
Peters doesn’t care about promotion or doing media. He was listed on the Forbes list in 2009 and 2010 as a top ten earning comic and that’s without any studio or network behind him. Shows you that you don’t need the entire system behind you to be successful. Let’s face it, he makes more money than most of the cast and so-called ‘celebrities’ in town. He sells out arenas here in the States and works completely outside the system by self-financing his own production and distribution.
When will she just go away? Sadly, when this p.o.s. movie makes bank, she will get more work.
so basically this movie is based on the all of the NYE parts from ‘When Harry Met Sally’ or any other movie that might have already dealt with the (overblown) holiday that is new year’s eve? cool.
The article mentions the less-demanding shooting schedule afforded by the ensemble nature of the film. About how long are they talking for Heigl, etc.?
Are you kidding? Are you Katherine Heigl’s agent or mother? “meaningful roles in high quality films”? It’s a 4-day role in the sequel to “Valentines Day”!!
Didn’t she get FIRED from Adaline? (Although I’m not in the biz so I could very well be way off).. I thought I’d heard that. Personality conflict or demands — something of that nature.
No.
Ellen, Hathaway’s & Gyllenhaal’s “Love and Other Drugs” cost $30 million and has already earned around $85 million worldwide- this is not a box -office failure.
the studios only get about half of that figure, the other half goes to exhibitors, so yes, it is a flop. pay attention industry outsider…
“love and other drugs” cost $30 m – that’s not very much. Add more for marketing ($40 million?). It’s grossed $85 so far and the returns (rentals) to the studio is about $50 m or less. Not a big hit.
It’s official, this is the least likable cast of all time
Jon Bon Jovi doing romantic comedy. Pretty much speaks for itself. Oy.
He gives love a bad name.
I think Jon Bon Jovi will be refreshing to see on the Big Screen.
(and not bad to look at either!)
I just can’t see him smooching with either Halley Berry or Katherine H. (I don’t like her either,(Katherine) never have.) There’s something about her . . . . . can’t put my finger on it.
I can see him with somebody like Elizabeth Hurley. I think they would have good chemistry for a romantic comedy.
