The search for a replacement of cancer-stricken Spartacus star Andy Whitfield is over. Australian actor Liam McIntyre has been named the new star of the Starz drama series, which became a breakout hit for the pay cable channel when it first launched a year ago. McIntyre was one of 3 actors who were flown to New Zealand to audition in November. He was the only one that remained in consideration after the test while the network continued to see other candidates. Starz brass reportedly liked his acting abilities but he was asked to bulk up his thin frame in order to pass off as a believable gladiator. In announcing McIntyre’s casting, Starz said he “has excelled at a grueling and rigorous audition process to claim the title role in the second season” of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. The series’ prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, debuts on Friday. Here is more from the network’s release:
McIntyre takes over the role of the Thracian warrior sold into slavery in the Roman Republic city of Capua – where he rises to become the champion of the city – before leading the slave revolt that ended Season 1. The part was played in the first season of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” by Andy Whitfield, who was forced to leave the show in order due to health issues. Whitfield gave his blessing to the recasting.
“Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead ‘Spartacus’ forward,” Straz’s CEO Chris Albrecht notes. “It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he’s dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”
Liam McIntyre made his mark in his native Australia on such series as “Neighbours,” and “Rush.” He also appeared in the HBO mini-series “The Pacific.” He recently completed his first feature starring role in the independent film Frozen Moments. McIntyre is currently in New Zealand, getting himself into gladiator shape in order to take on that iconic role. Production on the series is slated to resume by Spring of 2011.
McIntyre is repped by Progressive Artists’ Bernard Carneol and Belle Zwerdling.

Best choice. He has the right look; muscle can be added and/or disguised.
He is the best choice, but he is still nowhere near as hot as Andy Whitfield.
Lol, you can’t really disguise muscle and make it believable when 99% of the show you have your shirt off. He must of really bulked up.
Actually, you can disguise muscles very well, with make-up, airbrush and today’s technology of computer enhancement, you can really do anything.
Most original characters are dead. I like the “Kill Them All” episode. It did as promised.
Cool.He sometimes looks like Andy, but sometimes he looks like Sam Worthington.
Anyway, I wonder how different he will be physically.Andy is 5’10 and said he weighed 190 during the filming of the first season.
According to Liam’s bio, he’s 6’2 and weighs 189.I’d imagine he’ll put on more muscle and get into better shape for the second season.
They made a few jokes in the first season about how small Spartacus was and how he didn’t look like a Gladiator.Andy’s Spartacus was the same height as Crixus, but was physically smaller. He was also almost half a foot shorter than Doctore.
Liam’s Spartacus would be taller than Crixus, and the same height as Doctore. He would also weigh just as much.
Anyway, that’s all really beside the point.I hope they’re able to seamlessly transition between actors.
Hot! Spartacus will have a whole new group of female fans now- count me and my friends in! Exciting. Great choice with Liam!
They should have waited for Andy. He was the face of the series.
I agree, I would have waited. No one can’t fill Andy’s sandals… no one.
Agreed. Not seeing it in this guy and definitely not watching it with him.
i agree no one could ever replace andy whitfield and would happy wait for him, PLUS ANDY IS SOOOOOO HOT THAT ONE FINE MAN
Hey, I like Andy Whitfield as much as the next fan, but what’s with you people? Waiting that long for one actor would compromise many things. The other actors would all be kept on hold and restricted from other pursuits as would all of the writers and other staff members. Besides that, just declaring that “you won’t watch the show” because Whitfield isn’t in it is a disservice to his current struggle and all of the hard work he put in to make this show what it is.
it makes me sick to think Andy won’t be in the next season. I may not even watch it anymore. Andy is spartacus and no one could ever play that part now> i have seen every episode of blood and sand and gods of the arena I am probably the biggest fan ever. I will not watch it if andy is not in it, they should wait for him, run another season of prequel again till he gets better
as much as some think they should have waited for Andy to return to the role . the network had to move on other wise wind up losing money on not having the show back in production .espicaly given how expensive a show like Spartcus must be to make.
My goodness!!! NOOOOOOOO!!! I cant stand the thought of not seeing Andy on Spartacus anymore. He is what made the show what it is. He has so much passion when he performs. He truly pulls you into the show. Its truly not going to be the same. I am up in the air about whether I will still watch it. Its a hard call. Im so sad about this. I’m really hoping that he will come back after his recovery 100% and work again. I know many may say that we should just give the new guy a chance…but I dont want to.. I’m a Andy girl!! It was already bad enough that they killed my boy Varro off the show. But Geez now Andy too..(sad face).. Sigh.. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens……. Im truly a fan!!
If you’re truly a fan then you’ll want the production to continue as it is in Andy’s best interests. The production is keeping him on in some capacity to help his financial situation as he goes through this trying time. But the production cannot wait because Andy’s condition is still in flux. He has given his full consent for the show to go on without him and, with this casting, it will.
I think He looks like Andy at least.I hope Andy gets better and goes over to Torchwood as a british member of thier team next season!
Andy of course is not “replaceable ” but like the producers said, someone who can continue to lead the seris forward. This young man certainly has the looks. Let’s see if his acting is comparable. Those are some Tuff Sandals to fill! Andy, God Bless n the whole world wishes you well! Godspeed to your recovery! You will be missed ….
Andy is the one to give his Blessing for them to move forward with recasting. To say they should wait, makes Andy sound like a selfish self centered spoiled Actor who considers no one but himself. There are many many other peoples jobs n lives on the the line with this show. If you know anything at all about Andy Whitfield ” the man” that’s one thing he is not is selfish..those of us who truly love the genius creation of all that is Spartacus will be there with the show until the End and through All Ups Downs. I truly think this thing with Andy Whitfield is one of the most awful things I’ve ever heard of. Talk about unfair!! God Bless Andy may you have a Speedy recovery ..
I think that they should move the emphasis to another gladiator and do a spin off until Andy recovered, and then bring back Spartacus when Andy returns. I like Liam’s look and I would like to see him in action, just not as Spartacus.
I am torn like the poster above, but will probably end up watching the show anyway when it comes out on video (I do not get Starz network).
I see nothing un-gladiatorial about this.
Well get out your razor and the ball of wax Liam. There are no hairy torsos in ancient Rome. At least not on Starz
This great news could not have happened to a nicer guy. Liam is a gentleman’s gentleman.
It will NOT be the same. Was really hoping Andy was better for real life reasons first, then the show. If all goes well do u think he can still return when the time is right? Thoughts, bests wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.
Pray for him I hope he gets better it is sad that he has to leave but his Health is more important for him and his family
What ever happened to the American action hero?! I get that a strong jaw with an accent is trendy and all, but don’t we grow those in America too? Just saying..
Haha yea but they just can’t act as well as us Brits or the Aussies. Imagine an American actor trying to do an English accent, they’d just go cockney or posh…
I had heard directly from friends on the production that Andy’s cancer had taken a downward turn
So recasting the role is the only way the show will continue.
It’s very hard on Andy and his wife and children.
However he really does need all his strength and energy focused on getting well.
The show is really not even on the priority list, when one’s life/health is on the line.
I really do hope he makes a full recovery, by all accounts he’s a really lovely guy, and a talented actor.
I would really like to hear an update on his condition. I have not heard anything. anyone know? Really know, not heard from their second cousin type of thing?
Does anyone know when this movie Frozen Moments comes to the theater?????????
He lost weight for it so I’m wanting to see what all the talk about this film is.
As many have expressed, I also am very saddened that Andy Whitfield will not be coming back to his role as Spartacus. To hear even second hand rumors that Andy’s health is not improving is also very sad but someone made the comment that the producers are standing with Andy and giving financial support to his health care needs. With the shows immense popularity the producers could easily let it be known that contributions to Andy’s family could be helpful. If so I am sure a flood of funding would pour in from around the world. I will be watching every season Starz puts out of the Spartacus show knowing that I will be enjoying excellent entertainment and helping support Andy. Manu Bennet(Crixus) and Peter Mensah(Oenomeaus) are excellent actors and I’m sure they will assist with getting Liam up to speed. My greatest hope is that the producers try to get at least two more twelve episode seasons. There is plenty of history filled with action potential. If you loved Andy as Spartacus support the show by watching Liam try his best to honor the role.
He’s ok, I’ll still watch, but I’ll miss Andy.:)
Hey, at least they didn’t get Will Smith!
There are some interesting points in time in this article however I don’t know if I see all of them center to heart. There may be some validity but I will take maintain opinion till I look into it further.
Oh noooooooooo! Nooooo… I want Andy back. I don’t like this Liam at all! At least, not as Sparatcus. I’ll miss Andy, but I’ll still watch the series.
(
I am not fimilar with liam I dont really watch alot of t.v. and movies but sparatcus reeled me in I hope he is good because I think andy raised the bar pretty high he may be one of the best actors I have seen on t.v. and should make movies I would rather he be spartacus but i guess it is cool the show will continue I just hope andy will get through his illness becuase I would like to see him in more films in the future
Andy will always be my Gladiator! And the only one who could ever be Spartacus. But I wont not watch the show just because he got sick that would mean all the hard work he put into this show was for nothing. I hope they write the show right though and not make it so Andy can’t come back because after all he made the show.
