Syfy’s EVP original programming Mark Stern has been named president. He continues to report to Dave Howe, President, Syfy and Chiller. Stern also co-heads original content for Universal Cable Prods. alongside Jeff Wachtel, who, in a similar fashion, was promoted from EVP to president original programming of USA 2 years ago. Additionally, Stern will now have creative oversight on the newly formed Syfy Films, a joint venture with Universal Pictures.
A former television producer, Stern joined Syfy in 2002 and was named EVP in 2003. He is credited with shepherding such projects as series Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Stargate: Atlantis, Eureka, Ghost Hunters, Destination Truth, Ghost Hunters International, Sanctuary, Stargate: Universe, Caprica and Haven as well as the miniseries Tin Man.

This man is a class act. Truly, one of the best in the business!
Hey Mark — glad you stopped by to comment. You are the best. See you at the family reunion?
He’s the best they’ve got so this makes sense but I have a feeling that what they’ve got isn’t as strong as their spin makes it out to be.
Time will tell.
Unfortunately time has showed us….NO inprovement at SyFy! Still wrestling, awful movies and not mush else…..
a very deserving upgrade. a great executive and an even greater person.
As long as this means less rasslin’, I’m okay with this.
Didn’t he also cancel Caprica and Stargate the other month?
So long, smart science fiction. Hello, fluff and reality.
Ask him to get rid of the effing wrestling and move it back to USA where it actually belongs. What’s the point of genre channels if you don’t bother staying in genre?
i thought wrestling was science fiction
Yeah you had me till “Ghost Hunters.” Sorry, but Mark is one of the many responsible for ruining SciFi. The only good news as far as I’m concerned would be a complete sacking of all upper management, and a return to the network’s roots.
“Fringe” won the Peoples Choice Award for best Sci-Fi show this year, nothing on SyFy was nominated. He better get to work.
Mark Stern is a smart, caring, classy executive. He’s a pleasure to work with / for. He has great creative intuition. Mark deserves his new title. I wish more people in the biz were like him.
Big congrats to Mark!
Does this promotion mean he won’t make people wait for hours in the lobby? Lovely guy but the worst with managing his time and respecting other people’s time.
Well-deserved. Get after it, Mark.
Given Ronald D. Moore’s statement in the audio commentary for his brilliant “Battlestar Galactica” episode “Occupation” that Mark Stern completely backed his tackling the issue of suicide bombing under occupation, I can only infer that Mr. Stern is courageous and principled in a way so few network executives are. I can only hope that this means more TV shows by Syfy that are willing to challenge mainstream media conceptions to better our cultural understanding. As far as I can tell, this guy cares more about quality than cheap ambition for ratings above all else, and his elevation in power can’t be a bad thing. I hope he continues to support essential political insight into American foreign and domestic policy and dramatic realism in Michael Taylor’s “Blood and Chrome”.
Congratulations, Mr. Stern. Don’t stop fighting to make the world better.
as long as it means some new sci fi stuff mixed in with the stuff they already have. worse he decides to do some more remakes like being human. or better scy fi does more original series again other then running battle star galtica into the ground.
