EXCLUSIVE: Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska is negotiating to star in Stoker, the Fox Searchlight thriller that will be directed by Oldboy and Thirst director Chan-wook Park. The script was written by Wentworth Miller, the Prison Break star who wrote under the pseudonym Ted Foulke. Ridley and Tony Scott will produce with Michael Costigan under the Scott Free banner.
Carey Mulligan had been attached when the script sold, but it be Wasikowska in the lead role when shooting begins this spring. She’ll play an eccentric teen whose enigmatic and estranged uncle returns to the family after the death of the girl’s father. Strange things begin to happen. Jodie Foster had been attached along with Mulligan, but she’s not doing the film, I’m told. When he sold Stoker, Miller had also written Uncle Charlie, a prequel that explores another chapter in the history of a family with a knack for burying secrets as well as bodies.
It’s a good start in 2011 for the Australian actress, who last year played the title role in the billion-dollar grossing Alice in Wonderland, and also starred in The Kids Are All Right, named a Best Picture Oscar nominee earlier this week. She just wrapped the title role in the Cary Fukunaga-directed Jane Eyre. She’s repped by WME, and RGM Artist Group in Australia.

Exactly who I thought they should cast for India when I read this script, which was my favorite black list script. Excellent choice.
So much better than Carey Mulligan in that role!
most importantly, Park Chan-wook is the best fucking director on the planet. Scott Free better protect him from any/all Hollywood stupidity.
Yeah I hadn’t heard about Park doing this movie, my interest just went up 1000%
Don’t like this girl. What’s with Hollywood’s inability to find actual women to play roles instead of girls?
Because the role is for a girl. (moron).
Oh SNAP!
Too bad. I was excited about Carey Mulligan and Jodie Foster working together but looks like they got other big roles coming up with Mulligan inthe Great Gatbsy adaptation and Foster making God of Carnage and Elysium.
Except this actress will be stuck playing girls for a while since she still looks like one even though she isn’t. Yuck.
She looks a lot like Aurora Snow to me.
True, Mia Wasikowska was born in the Australian capital of Canberra, but her mother is Polish. Last name: way Polish. Can we get at least half-props for the Poles? Aussies seem to grab all the glitter these days.
If “Uncle Charlie” is a prequel, then it’s the prequel to Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt,” right?
And this movie will be about Joseph Cotten’s character who was referred to as the “Merry Widow killer,” right?
They both spell “Charlie” the same.
Brilliant.
Apparently Wentworth Miller is a better writer than he is actor. I’m actually impressed.
“Stoker” lacks originality, we have seen that story a million times. Miller is plagiarizing Hitchcock, sadly he is not Hitchcock!
It’s good news that both Wasikowska and Park are attached to “Stoker”, and even better news that it’s scheduled to shoot this Spring. I never thought Jodie Foster was right for the film anyway so no big loss there, and Wasikowska who is a few years younger than Mulligan is more believable as an 18-year-old girl.
But they are saying now that it is about a vampire!! I saw Shadow of a doubt with Joseph Cotten and it certainly wasn”t about Dracula!!! Perhaps because the girl is called Stoker someone thinks about Bram Stoker!! or is it really about a vampire?
PARK IS UTTER GENIUS!!! BEST DIRECTOR RIGHT NOW!!
