EXCLUSIVE: Mike White has just dropped out of directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel that injects flesh-eating corpses to Jane Austen’s 1813 literary classic. I’m hearing that White had a preexisting commitment at HBO and they couldn’t make schedules mesh. Lionsgate chose White after David O. Russell exited but left behind a strong script. I just got a confirmation of the exit, and a statement from White: “I loved the project and looked forward to working with Lionsgate. Unfortunately, the timing could not be worked out. I wish them the best with the movie.” The thriller is a big piece of business for Lionsgate, along with The Hunger Games. They are going right back out to filmmakers to get the project back on track.

Someone needs to get this to a pro who can handle the humor and the horror. Lionsgate should get WES CRAVEN on the phone.
After writing and directing ‘My Soul To Take’ Wes Craven would be last person I’d want to direct this.. ‘Scream 4′ had better be a big hit or maybe it’s time for Wes to retire.
Maybe it’s time for your face to retire. What the F movie have you directed? Get off Wes’ jock.
please tell me you are below the age of 12. “time for your face to retire”?! “what movie have you directed”?! believe it or not, you can still comment on the quality of work a director does even if you haven’t made a big budget movie. In fact, usually a good place to look for how well a director did, is if the movie was liked or disliked by audiences. And no matter which way you look at it Wes Craven’s career has had its shares of ups and downs
we want a “Chuck and Buck” sequel.
No we don’t.
That must be some HBO project.
IT IS!!! The best TV script i’ve read in the past decade.
Get real. You think he bailed on this movie for an HBO project? First David O Russell and now Mike White. These guys can’t keep a director on this thing.
Hello, it should be Edgar Wright. SCOTT PILGRIM rocked. The only reason it was considered a disappointment at the box office is because it was a $60M budget and it should have been $15-20M.
The budget ballooned to over 100 mill and that’s not including p&a. I love me some edgar wright, but them is the facts.
false. scott pilgram was hipster garbage.
Agreed. Wes Craven would be really interesting on P&P&Z. Loved his season of “mentorship” on Project Greenlight. He always ahd really interesting thoughts on story and structure.
That’s the lamest excuse I’ve ever heard — he’s dropping out of a huge movie, probably a blockbuster, to work on some unnamed HBO project? The studio probably told Ugly Mike to take a hike. Or, he figured he was in over his head. But nobody is going to drop out of directing one of the biggest movies of the year to work on an unnamed HBO project. It is insulting to the public when this is the stated rationale. It’s like saying Mel Gibson dropped out of Hangover II because he had a dentist appointment he couldn’t re-schedule.
It’s not an unnamed HBO project, it’s a commitment to his series Enlightened, which has already shot it’s first season and is pending renewal on a 2nd.
right. cause having your own HBO show is so much lamer than doing the fourteenth zombie movie of the year
time to time we all need to bail on a plan. The decision is often so hard that there can be no benefit from stating beliefs truthfully, especially being that they may be largely hidden from ourselves.
He’s leaving a movie, not his wife dude.
Weren’t Phil Lord and Chris Miller in the running to direct this before? They should circle back. Perfect fit for the guys who made Clone High.
It’s like sipping a hot choco lemon drink…
Who cares? This movie will fail. The zombie fans won’t care about the satire or the historical/literary background and the ripped bodice romance fans won’t want to see a zombie movie.
Edgar Wright could direct the shit out of this.
I’m thinking of… SAM RAIMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the worst written books out there, with childish cartoons and tedious pacing. It’s basically just a gag; the cover is funny, that’s about it. It didn’t sell that many copies either; plenty of hype but no actual sales. I think David O. and Mikey White dodged two zombie stakes.
They should hire Uwe Boll for this movie. LOL
