New broadcast entertainment chiefs Bob Greenblatt and Paul Lee are shaking things up this pilot season with some out-of-the-box pilot pickup choices. The latest is an order just made by Greenblatt at NBC for Grimm, described as a dark but fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist. It comes from Angel co-creator David Greenwalt and the show’s writer Jim Kouf. Greenblatt previously picked up to pilot Ron Moore’s drama pilot 17th Precinct, a cop drama set in a town where magic rules over science, 1960s drama Playboy and the Broadway show-themed Smash, among others. Meanwhile, Lee has Poe, a crime procedural with Edgar Allan Poe set in 1840s Boston and 1960s drama pilot Pan Am. Grimm is being produced by UMS and Sean Hayes’ Hazy Mills. Greenwalt and Kouf are executive producing with Hayes and his producing partner Todd Milliner.

All of those NBC shows actually sound fun, different, and interesting. I hope this is a creative rebirth for the struggling network.
Agreed. Unfortunately, NBC is currently overflowing with shows, has yet to even air two or is it three freshman, and LOLA is on hiatus. Chase and The Event will probably get canceled, but a lot of the other crap won’t.
Paul Lee and Bob Greenblatt are both creative types. What are their two Brandon Tartikoffs at the same time.
Ahh, this has been in development hell for NBC for a while. Nice to see they are going high concept.
This is a rip-off of a long-running DC/Vertigo comic book called Fables, which was also in development for TV. No shame from stealing in Hollywood!
and where the eff do you think FABLES came from….? hmmm, maybe think before you type
Nice to see this pick up! I’ve heard about the concept for awhile and can’t wait to see the actual pilot. Here’s to a great one!
It’s so great to see NBC thinking out-of-the-box and hiring diversity writers… wait, no. Scratch that.
your bigotry against anything white male is astounding. stop trolling around and worry about your own game. maybe a white male would hire you on staff (like mad men’s mostly female staff), but not if you’re this venomous in person
“maybe a white male would hire you on staff”… why would you say that? Why wouldn’t you say, “maybe a Latina would hire you on staff” or “maybe an Indian woman would hire you on staff” or “maybe an Asian man would hire you on staff”… do you understand what I’m getting at? Do you see how the idea of the white male running a show is the default setting for the Industry? I guess not if you’re SWM.
Bravo!
Sounds a bit like the comic book series “Fables” meets the comic book series “Powers.”
“Fables” takes place in a world where all the fairy-tale characters live in exile in Manhattan (well in a secret corner of Manhattan called Fabletown.) The Big Bad Wolf is the sheriff and Snow White the mayor.
And “Powers” takes place in a world with super-heroes and focuses on two cops who specialize in cases involving super-heroes.
The former in development for ages now and the latter coming to F/X at some point.
Interesting…
Really people?Because Fables is the first place you’ve seen this concept, your going to say this show is ripping it off?I don’t hear anyone bitching about Fables, which has only been around for 9 years, ripping off previous projects that already had this concept.
That’s because when Fables came out with a series about fairy tale characters living in the modern world (and starting with a murder investigation) there wasn’t currently a popular series in existence with that premise. Fables is one of the big hits of the comics world (which is being mined heavily now following the success of The Walking Dead), so it’s not as if Hollywood is unaware of that series.
Two Words Dude: Top Ten. Look, the whole concept of one medium borrowing characters, plots, entire worlds, is as old as the hills. The idea that two different media could develop a similar concept, in this case a contemporary investigative drama story based on traditional fairytale characters, is so within the realm of possibility that it barely warrants discussion.
But regardless, what’s more interesting about this is the fact that “Grimm” hasn’t even STARTED shooting its pilot yet; it goes to-camera next week. So, it would seem NBC has a lot of confidence both in the concept and in the production team.
Portland is about to get a whole lot busier…
Rip off?? There are only 3 basic storylines in TV – everything is derivative. What’s the difference between “inspired by” and “rip off?”
If it’s in the public domain, then it’s “inspired by”; if it’s still under copyright, then it’s “ripped off”.
It’s not that “Fables” is the first to do this kind of thing, certainly, but it is one of the first to do it really, really well (with exceptions, like the second act of Sondheim/Lapine’s “Into the Woods”). Kind of figure this doesn’t have a shot at getting past pilot, so “Fables” fans can rest easy that, well, maybe Warners WILL be able to turn it into That Thing That Replaces “Harry Potter” as a mighty franchise.
These pick-ups sound great. Would definitely have me watching more NBC content.
Im glad to see NBC going out of the creatove box an picking up pilots that arent just your cop/medical shows..kudos!!..
Yes, really great news, especially when they get to episode 8 and no longer have a story engine.
Hopefully Bob can find a couple of cop and doctor shows that at least reinvent those genres. Less CSI, more Homicide Life on the Street, character-oriented ones.
Well, they do have that Steve Gaghan pilot which seems great. It actually seems thought provoking and not just your average cookie cutter tv show.
Sounds like the next pushing daisies. Hopefully it won’t meet the same fate.
Also there’s a comic called “Arrowsmith” where they’re fighting WWI in a world where magic rules over science and mythical creatures exist. Actually I wouldn’t mind seeing THAT as a series.
Worst idea ever. Who cares about the Grimm’s fairy tells? Nobody cares.
Sooooooo… this is FABLES only it’s not FABLES because ABC has that drowning in production hell somewhere in lou of more LIFETIME-esque programming? Excellent.
I am not a hater of any of the people involved in this. But this was already a fricking Terry Gilliam movie with Matt Damon and Heath Ledger called, wait for it, THE BROTHERS GRIMM. Unoriginal is one thing, but outright concept PLAGIARISM has to be called out.
Either Greenwalt and Kouf (who I don’t know and have no axe to grind about) didn’t think anyone would remember the film THE BROTHERS GRIMM with it’s uncannily similar plot, or Bob is just another executive who doesn’t know enough about the history of entertainment to be easily fooled.
Doesn’t anybody have any shame any more? Jeez.
Whether it’s a rip-off from another show or not, frankly I don’t care. I only know I’d like to watch it, since I love the Grimm’s tales, growing up with them as kid in Germany. And I would LOVE to be on that show, if they’re looking for a German speaking actress
Pardon my not so elegant dropping of a broad hint, lol… I couldn’t stop myself ^.^
I heard rumors of Jason Stojanovski playing a lead in this…. He did 7th Hunt. Crazy good Aussy actor!
I hope you stay closer to true to the book than some of the others. If you examine the stories carefully, you will find that some of them intertwine in a continuing story.
