UPDATED: It’s a big comedy pilot pickup day at NBC. The network just picked up 4 half-hour pilots, including two multicamera sitcoms based on the comedy of two edgy, good-looking female comedians, Chelsea Handler and Whitney Cummings, one written by Peter Tolan and one written by Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith and produced by Jack Black.
Handler’s Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea is a multicamera comedy inspired by latenight star’s autobiographical book of the same name about her life in her 20s. The project, written and
executive produced by Dharma & Greg co-creator Dottie Zicklin and Julie Larson, centers on a 20-something woman who has a very honest and provocative point of view on dating, friends and family. Vodka, from Warner Bros. TV and Werner Entertainment, was developed at NBC after landing at the network in a competitive situation with a put pilot commitment in November. Handler, who won’t be starring in the comedy, is executive producing with her producing partner at Borderline Amazing Prods. Tom Brunelle, Werner Entertainment’s Werner and Mike Clements. The casting on the project promises to be interesting, looking for a 20-something Handler. In addition to Vodka, Zicklin has another comedy project in contention at Fox.
The untitled multicamera Whitney Cummings project, from UMS and Scott Stuber Prods., will star Cummings. It focuses on a young couple and the ups and downs of a committed relationship in today’s complicated world. Cummings wrote the script and is co-executive producing, with Stuber, Quan Phung and Barry Katz exec producing. Additionally, Cummings has Two Broke Girls, a pilot at CBS, which she wrote and es exec producing with Michael Patrick King.
The single-camera Brave New World, from Sony Pictures TV and Peter Tolan’s Fedora Entertainment, is a workplace comedy that follows a group of unusual characters at Pilgrim Village, a theme park that specializes in recreations of New England in 1637. Tolan wrote the script and is exec producing with producing partner Michael Wimer. This is the second pilot order in as many days for Tolan whose comedy The Council of Dads got the green light at Fox yesterday. Word is that neither of them is in first position.
The single-camera My Life As An Experiment, from Sony TV, Reveille and Jack Black’s Electric Dynamite, is based on the book by A.J. Jacobs and centers on a magazine writer who immerses himself (and his family) in unusual situations for his stories which always reflect back on his marriage. Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith wrote the script and are exec producing with Jack Black, Carolyn Bernstein, Howard Owens, Ben Cooley and Priyanka Mattoo.
Despite going through a leadership transition, NBC has been very aggressive on the pilot pickup front with a whopping 11 pilots already ordered. Interestingly, only one of them, the untitled Whitney Cummings, is from NBC sister studio UMS. Three – Wonder Woman, A Mann’s World and Vodka - are from Warner Bros., three – Playboy, S.I.L.A. and I Hate That I Love You from 20th TV – and three, 17th Precinct, Brave New World and My Life As an Experiment – from Sony. One of the Friday pilot pickups, Smash, which DreamWorks TV originally developed with Greenblatt at Showtime, will now be a co-production with UMS via layoff.

ugh…sigh…vomit
Are you there, Chelsea? It’s me, comedy. Why do you hate me so much?
Great comment.
WTF
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Yeah, I don’t get her. More insult ‘comedy’ I suppose.
Well put! I don’t get Chelsea Handler. AT ALL. She’s not funny, engaging, interesting, provocative, creative…. I could go on and on.
Wow Chelsea Handler and the writers of Dharma and Greg. Can you get anymore unfunny in one show? Unless the writers from Homeboys in Outer Space are teaming up with Tyler Perry I don’t think so.
I heart you.
Hey, Dharma & Greg was funnier than any show Chuck Lorre’s done since (largely, I admit, due to Greg’s parents).
Side note, is WB TV doing all the multi-cam pilots these days? It seems like it. They really seem to be the only studio that’s aggressively into that form (and with their multi-cam successes plus the single-cam “The Middle” they’re looking at quite a few happy syndication deals). Fox used to be into it but has cut back lately, and some of the other studios just don’t seem interested at all.
Thank you for that!
True, but you might want to hold your breath for Jack Black’s show. If his recent stuff is anything to go by, it’s going to be a stinker.
This is great news! Greenblatt, kudos to you!
I love Chelsea! I’ll watch if it’s picked up!
Chelsea Handler is a funny lady.
Jumbo Shrimp. Hey now!
Chelsea really needs to update her promo pics and the intro to her show, because I’m sorry but girl does not look like that anymore. Maybe it’s the drinking, maybe it’s the all night sex romps with Fiddy Cent, but those perky days are done.
Are you there face? It’s me, Photoshop!
You just made me laugh out loud!
This thread is hilarious.
Laughed for almost a minute straight at this comment. Well played.
Don’t you people read the rumors? Chelsea is being groomed to replace Leno as host of the Tonight Show in a few more years.
Until they force her out so Leno can go back to hosting it.
Now that’s funny. I used to like Jay Leno (didn’t watch the show that much) but now he sounds like a spoiled brat. Conan O’brien is naturally funny, I think Chelsea’s one of those people too!
You may have misread the rumors. I’m hearing she’s being groomed to be Leno’s replacement poodle.
Dogs don’t need to be funny.
Another funny statement.
Doesn’t Whitney Cummings other CBS pilot Two Broke Girls already receive a full pilot order? Status?
I think it did get picked up already! Love me some Whitney.
none of these shows will make it to season 2
Chelsea is absolutely hilarious. Will definitely be watching that show in addition to Chelsea Lately.
Isn’t Ryan usually a guy’s name?
What do all of these comedies mean for Community, Perfect Couples, The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock and Outsourced? Does NBC plan on getting rid of all these comedies?
Well, these are just pilot orders of course, so there’s no guarantee that any of them will make it to series. 30 Rock has already been renewed for next season, and The Office is expected to return with Carrell, but the others are still in the air. I’d expect Community and Parks & Rec to be back, but I wouldn’t bet on Outsourced or Perfect Couples.
30 Rock has already been picked up for next season. Office is a lock, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see P&R and even Community follow. Outsourced and Perfect Couples seem dead.
Obviously NBC is thinking, like last year, about trying another comedy hour or even another comedy night. If they don’t, they probably will turn down most of the comedies like last year, when they ordered a ton of multi-camera pilots and then turned them all down (even though their multi-cam development ideas were better than their single-cams that year).
I think they need to shake up their complacent schedule, especially if The Office can’t stand up without Carell, but they’d be better off ordering some multi-camera shows and blocking them together, on another night, rather than a “100 Questions” type of thing where they killed a pretty good pilot by trying to make it look single-camera (i.e. bland and energy-free).
The thought process is that they are going to open another night. I personally feel some of these comedies should be midseason replacements (if no football due to potential lockout) and premiered on Sunday. The only other place it would work on NBC would be Tuesday. They haven’t had anything worth a damn comedy wise on Monday since the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Not all of those shows you mentioned are getting cancelled but imo Perfect Couples and Outsourced will. The rest are bubbles and to be honest so should Community that show can’t draw ratings if it had to.
Hey Jack Black,…don’t forget to include that “Balloon-Boy” episode in the new show.
Bubble-Boy! Not Balloon Boy!
having met Chelsea and Whitney in person, I must commend the team at Industrial Light and Magic on what an amazing job they did airbrushing those two photos of them.
typical douche does not have anything intelligent to say, except rag on a females appearance.
Yeah, unlike Dog-Faced Handler herself, who spent an entire year calling Tori Spelling ugly. Apparently, even with all her millions, Woof Woof Handler has not yet been able to afford a mirror in her own home. If she had, the word “ugly” in relation to any living human being would never pass her slivered lips.
Whitney’s not playing one of the “young couple” cast members is she?
She’s one of their parents right?
Glad to see Dottie Dartland-Zicklin’s back in the game. Now someone needs to give Eric a call.
…Do I make the check out to “Brick”?
Whitney Cummings is about as unfunny as it gets. She’s a “pop in” act during the amateur “Pot Luck” almost every Monday night at the Comedy Store where she rapes the ear drums of unwitting participants week after week. They run about 40 newcomers through there including the clubs own bar staff and even a homeless person or two. Whitney’s canned act is easily the low point of the night. It’s truly SHOCKING that she can procure the services of a full service gas station attendant, let alone an agent or manager. The ONLY thing she has going for her is that she’s ugly as sin as everyone knows attractive comedians never make it. Look at Lisa Lampinelli, Margerate Cho, or Kathy Griffin. Disgusting = career.
Yikes – I’ve never known anyone to have such a ‘case dismissed!’ opinion on Whitney, like this.
In her defense: she is always on her A game when she visits the Howard Stern Show, and her drive-by shootings at the various roasts always entertain me.
You cite Lisa Lampanelli – another good source for filthy racist humor, but not much depth or chops with which to make the Great Leap in TV/movies – and another comic (female or otherwise) whose longer form stand-up really lasers in on how one-note her shtick really is. So let’s say you’re right on the money about Whitney in this respect…maybe TV is the *right move* for her, then?
She’s a pretty damn decent comedy writer, ladies seem warmer to her than they’ve been to Sarah Silverman, and she’s just (and I will go ahead and barf *for* you before I even type this next word) ‘edgy’ enough for plenty of folks out there.
Who knows what will happen, but: give Whitney a chance, I say – and it seems two networks are.
Witney Cummings is nothing close to edgy. She has no respect among decent comedians, has the reputation of treating people horribly on the road and couldn’t write a decent joke to save her life.
She sure can move her body to sell those jokes though. About as subtle as a nuclear explosion.
She’s the classic network pushed unfunny attractive girl. They think they have something but what they have is loud and void of substance.
Quick rise up and down. Seen it a millions times. The networks never learn.
i am a woman and i think that cummings SUUUUUUCKS. not funny. at all. ever. her face looks like melty wax and it is beyond me how she is able to reach this level of success. the only thing funny about her is when she says how old she is. hahahah. lololol. i think she says she’s like 27 or something. hilarious. LMFAO. sarah silverman is an original. everyone, girl or guy, likes her better than whitney. this business sucks!
Is Kari Lizer’s project still on the table?
Good for Tom Werner getting a show on with Chelsea…must be
eating Caryn Mandabach to no end….
Inthecrowd, I happen to think that Whitney is very beautiful.
Then you’re in the minority, or you’re Whitney herself LOL. This airbrushed fabrication and Whitney Cumings in the flesh are two entirely different things.
@inthecrowd it must be sad to occupy your mind. judging someones worth based on their physical appearance. by the way i am sure you look like a supermodel in real life *sarcasm
I read, “…based on the comedy of edgy, good-looking female comedians Chelsea Handler and Whitney Cummings.”
Edgy?
Handler is an unfortunately ill-tempered, uneducated, bitter, hard-drinking malcontent with the morals of an alley cat.
Cummings aspires to be a knock-off Handler.
Both hate men-for good reason, of course.
One is a drunk, the other depressive & unfunny.
Neither are “edgy”, just sad, lonely women.
“Good looking”?
Doing “comedy” while drunk and/or depressed doesn’t do a body good. Handler was good looking 10 years ago, before drink & drugs destroyed her looks.
Cummings looks 10 years older and 20 years sadder.
NBC is going after the 18-35 female demo. And believe it or not, millions of young women adore wise-cracking, foul-mouthed, men-hating noise makers like Handler and Cummings.
By the way, I despise 95% of the male “comics”, who are equally ill-tempered, immoral/amoral, uneducated, female-hating, over-medicated, swarmy, potty-mouthed vagrants who sell tickets to mostly guy audiences of similarly illiterate and amoral malcontents.
Bottom line:
NBC may make money off of both Handler’s & Cumming’s sitcoms.
And that’s really all that counts, isn’t it?
Okay, YOU are officially my hero for life. Clearly, a man with a unique talent for telling the unvarnished truth with ease and aplomb.
all i see and ever see about anything involving female comics is insecure freaks attacking their looks right away or calling them “bitter” or “man-hating” you did all of that, congratulations on being a deplorable example of a human being
Nice try, but there is NO ONE who attacks women and their appearance more than DOG-FACED Chelsea Handler. This talent-free drunk, has the utter temerity to REPEATEDY attack Tori Spelling’s looks. Yet you idolize Woof Woof Handler, don’t you?
She similarly has attacked the appearance of black and Asian children — BABIES — all because she doen’t like their mother. But you’re fine with that too, aren’t you? And let’s not forget the drunk’s stock-in-trade effort at “humor” — standing on a stage and yelling “fvck you” to a woman in the audience who dared call her out for calling another woman whom she has never met a cvnt. So spare me your righteous indignation in the cause of “womanhood.” Anyone who is a fan of Fido “Here Girl” Handler hates women as much as she does.
Thanks, Hasbeen Aniston.
Didn’t want to come off too judgmental.
Nice screen name. Sad but true.
“The network just picked up 4 half-hour pilots, including two multicamera sitcoms based on the comedy of two edgy, good-looking female comedians.”
There are other kinds of female comedians allowed in Hollywood?
Bravo! Finally some ballsy choices!
I’ve known Whitney since she was in college. She’s the age she says she is, she’s beautiful and she’s quite nice compared to most Hollywood actors. Why you all cold-hatin’ on her?
Something to do with her being wildly unfunny.
or you being wildly insecure with a woman funnier than you.
She’s still not funny, and it’s got nothing to do with the insecurity of viewers. LOL.
