NBC has given a pilot order to 17th Precinct, an ensemble cop drama with supernatural elements from Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore. The project, from Sony Pictures TV where Moore is under an overall deal, has been described as an adult Harry Potter. It is set in the fictional town of Excelsior where magic and supernatural elements rule over science. The pitch for the drama landed at NBC in September with a big commitment that reportedly included pilot and series penalties totaling close to $2 million. This is the second drama pilot pickup for NBC this season, following the recent green light to Playboy.

OMG! Another Cop drama! I can’t wait to…zzzzzzzzz.
So, Heinlein’s “Magic, Inc” as a police procedural? Sounds like fun to me. . .
Anyone remember the movie LOVECRAFT?
Yes!!!! Is it set in a fantasy world or contemporary looking one?
Next season’s CAPE!
Love it!
Can anyone create a new kind of cop drama? Please! Everything is the same old same old. How about bringing in a cop show from another country at least?!
Yeah, it’s a cop show…with magic. Isn’t that creating something different from the usual formulaic procedurals??
And with Ron’s touch this is going to be more Batman Begins than the Cape…god the cape is so bad.
There was a show called Special Unit 2 with same exact premise – ran for 3 or 4 seasons. So is this idea worth $2MM? Because if that’s the case, I have an idea about this guy who turns superhero who gets a special suit but Loses the instruction manual
@Bubba Great! I’ve got the perfect theme song. The chorus is already worked out. Stay with me, “Believe it or not, I’m walking on air. I never thought I could feel so free-. Flying away on a wing and a prayer. Who could it be? Believe it or not it’s just me.” What do you think? It’s got hit written all over it.
So it is Alan Moore’s Top 10 without the budget.
Sounds like The Dresden Files to me. Shame they didn’t give that series more of a chance.
@PJ: I agree 100% – both in that this sounds like a DF rip-off and that I wish SciFi (or SyFy) had given it more of a chance…
Yet another middle-aged white guy getting a pilot pick-up. Yeah. Ground-breaking.
Oh brother, this sounds like a big pile of crap to me. Moore should have stuck to BSG… but with the way it ended, I’m thinking his luck has run out.
Whatever the head-writer of the brilliant “Battlestar Galactica” writes, I’m there. As soon as he hands off the show to lesser talents and simply supervises from afar, count me out!
Expected a lot more of Moore… he hasn’t used the cache he earned on Battlestar to do anything worth a fart in the wind.
“The Dresden Files” was indeed an awesome show.
A few months after BSG ended, I read Ronnie’s five-page treatment for 17th Precinct and the only thing middle-aged about it was one of the characters. This sucker will be a force.
As a fan of Mr. Moore’s work, I can only anticipate that, as surely as the son also rises, this will prove as unexpected and compelling as Battlestar was in its extraordinary run. I’ll be watching, hopefully from a courtside seat.
Just for the record: Glen A Larson created BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, which debuted in 1978. …not Ronald D Moore, the king of awful re-imaginings. Pffft…
