2ND UPDATE, SATURDAY AM: An MSNBC insider told this to Deadline today about Keith Olbermann’s departure Friday:
“This was all Keith’s choice. He has several times over the years said that he wants out of his contract. He never meant it until this year. He started lawyers negotiating twice this year. He stopped them in the spring. Then, about a month ago with the guidance of his new ICM team and a new LA manager (who were making zero $ on his current deal), he once again said he wanted to leave and this time they negotiated the full package.
“Because of all the false threats in the past, it was impossible for the network to know if he was really going to sign the final document yesterday. That’s why promos for his show were still running after he quit on the air. The network couldn’t really believe it or act on it until he said it on TV. They couldn’t tell the promo people to pull Keith’s show out of the cycle until they were sure. His staff learned he was quitting when they heard him say it on TV.
“Comcast has had no impact at all on MSNBC [yet]. Phil Griffin has complete authority. He makes deals without having to consult with anyone. He has made proposals over the years on the fly and in high-speed contexts where he is acting alone and with full authority. MSNBC is Phil Griffin’s network and no one at NBC thinks they have a better idea than Phil about what to do next.”
Rachel Maddow & Bill Maher React To Keith Olbermann’s Ouster
Adam Green, co-founder, Progressive Change Campaign Committee at BoldProgressives.org who “saved” Olbermann’s job the last go-round with MSNBC, had this to say: “The newly announced line up, including the addition of Cenk Uygur, consists of people who will undoubtedly continue Keith Olbermann’s legacy of holding power to account. But there’s a gnawing feeling among many MSNBC viewers that Keith blazed the trail for these other good hosts, Keith wasn’t ready to leave yet, and an important leader is now being sidelined involuntarily.” In his goodbye last night, Keith thanked the 300,000 folks who signed the PCCC’s Olbermann petition last November.
UPDATE FRIDAY PM: The word inside MSNBC is that Keith Olbermann, who’d been negotiating his out with one year left on his contract, can’t move to another cable/broadcast news channel right away, so he may be “on ice” for some time. On the other hand, he could go back into sports talk.
—
FRIDAY 6 PM: The statement (below) about Keith Olbermann’s exit came without warning. The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell will move to 8 PM weekdays on MSNBC, and The Rachel Maddow Show remaining at 9 PM, with The Ed Show starring Ed Schultz moving to 10 PM. Cenk Uyger of the liberal “Young Turks” will be taking over Ed’s 6 PM slot. The moves are simultaneous with new owner Comcast starting to show its hand over the broadcast network and cable NBCU after receiving FCC approval. “He’s been very problematic,” an NBCU source told Deadline about Comcast’s attitude to Olbermann. Officially, the Comcast takeover is next week. But word has been circulating for months now that the new owners have wanted to “tinker” with MSNBC and had many changes in store, including a right turn for the left-wing cable channel so that it represents both political points of view more evenly. It is well known that both Comcast chief Brian Roberts and NBCU chief Steve Burke have donated heavily to the Republican party with Burke more recently donating money to a few Democrats as well as heavily to Republicans. Roberts was a co-chairman of the host committee at the 2000 Republican Convention while Burke raised at least $200,000 for George W Bush’s re-election campaign.
:
STATEMENT REGARDING KEITH OLBERMANN: MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC’s success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

What a terrible start to my weekend. Comcast and MSNBC bye-bye. Keith was why I turned to MSNBC. I guess smart isn’t what you’re now going for……….shame on you.
Really sad,but I amsure the Fox zombies won’t mind, they never did like people who speak the truth.
if you want the truth………..Then SARA PALIN should replace him…….But you libs could not take the truth
Can’t take anyone seriously who says “you libs” (because they’re all the same, of course) or who CAN’T FUCKING SPELL SARAH PALIN’S NAME RIGHT.
oh please, you folks with your “I’ll never watch MSNBC/NBC again!” nonsense. Where else are you going to get you leftist fix? CNN perhaps? Problem is CNN doesn’t quite tow the line on leftist theology — they give it a go, but their world view isnt as devoid of facts as is MSNBC’s.
At least you’ve still got everyone’s favorite guy, Maddow !!
OMG, I get it I get it! Rachel Maddow is a lesbian, so you said something about how she’s like a man! OMG, I never heard that one before! That’s a good one! You’re a RIOT!
Too bad in your wildest dreams you’ll never be as popular as Rachel Maddow. Someone’s just J-E-A-L-O-U-S.
Way to dispel the myth of the conservative jackwagon.
Dr. Maddow (she has a doctorate from Oxford. & You?) is more man than you’ll ever be & more woman than you’ll ever have.
PS:
Your mom still wants you to move out of the basement.
Funny dude!
monopolies are a blast. let’s see what else comcast promised the FCC and DOJ to get the deal done.
The FCC required ComCast to Give Low Cost broadband to low income homes.
The also required them to Sell Lap to computers to these homes, for $150.00 or less.
A socialist wet dream.
With all the gigantic problems facing NBC, this is Comcast’s first order of business? Very curious!
I signed up for Comcast two weeks ago, in order to watch Keith Olberman. I’ll begin by boycotting MSNBC. And if FCC doesn’t reconsider the Comcast takeover of MSNBC, I’ll cancel Comcast.
No you won’t.
Stupidest comment so far. If you like him so much you would have signed up ages ago. If you boycott MSNBC, who will know? Oh wait, they had so few viewers one missing would really be felt
In fact it would cut their audience in half.
Again I say replace it with what????
O’Donnell is a terrible lead in for Maddow, and nobody wants to watch Ed Schultz at 10pm. MSNBC just blew up their evening. Maybe CNN will fire Piers and hire Keith.
You could have just stopped with “nobody wants to watch Ed Schultz”.
And the long shadow of Comcast is just beginning to block out the sun. The blood letting has just begun.
That being said…getting rid of Keith is a smart move as he is such an asshole crybaby…and, he never was a journalist or objective interviewer or anything other than an adult hoodlum getting back at all the people, who in his youth who made fun of him, because he was and still is a self centered nerd. He has lots of issues.
Sorry, Keith, but shit still stinks no matter how it is dressed.
If Keith is lucky, CNN will snap him up into their great array of programming. He is a perfect fit.
How about Keith and Anderson 720?
Yes. It’s always a GREAT idea for a network that isn’t doing shit in the realm of viewership to screw up the only thing they had that was working. You may hate the guy, but there’s never any good reason to give up your best product before you have something better to sell.
its only been a few hours…….in the big picture it was not working…unless you are completley ignorant to anything else…..i bet in less than a year msnbc will be a better rated news channel……at least some people have a vision and are not afraid to go for it……..now thats a real americn…….
Good. no more extreme hate-mongering. Maybe I can actually stomach some news on NBC now.
It is difficult for me to understand this parting of the ways. Each time Comcast takes something over, something good dies.
Wouldn’t Deadline be such a happier place if Drudge would stop linking to it? I live on a coast for a reason.
Because you like high taxes and the Government running every aspect of your life?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. (I KID! I KID!)
Nah, its only time I do not feel like the only conservative who follows deadline every day. Thanks Matt Drudge!
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I feel like every time I start to see the good in humanity, I accidentally stumble onto some Know-Nothing Drudge Teabaggers on this site spraying their inane talking points and lose it. Thanks, guys.
Olbermann is off the air. We all have won. There are no losers.
Hope he goes back to sports. He was a good sports anchor in L.A.
A great sportscaster? Give me a break.
Actually he and Dan Patrick were pretty good on Sportcenter for a long time.
Based on the ratings, I’m amazed he lasted as long as he did. Even by NBC standards, that whole “news network” has gotta be a tax write-off. They could replace the entire line-up with reruns of Leno and pull in as many viewers as a live breaking news event. (and probably triple their ratings in the heartland.)
Waiting to be called a Nazi teabagger by the newly civil left. LOL
Most on the left are hypocrites. They talk about civility while throwing around terms like teabagger if you don’t agree with them.
Since Olbermann’s ratings —reminiscent of Donahue’s a decade ago— were high, it’s obviously not a market-driven decision…more like censorship as this former democracy Empire of Spectacle races towards completing its devolution to corporate totalitarian “Family” of sociopaths…certainly couldn’t have Keith discussing the movement to overturn or vacate Citizen’s United.
“Since Olbermann’s ratings —reminiscent of Donahue’s a decade ago— were high”
High? Really?
He couldn’t even beat Greta and he typically pulled only 30% of O’Reilly’s numbers. I know libs can’t grasp market place concepts concerning economic issues, but it’s comical (being as they are self-proclaimed to be so much smarter than the hoi polloi) when they also can’t grasp the meaning of the “market pace of ideas.” O’mann may have been on top of the MSNBC pile, but put the pile in perspective, puh-lease!
High? LOL!
Great news. The Worst Person on Television finally got the boot.
This is such disappointing news! When I still watched TV (I loathe Comcast and switched off my TVs because of them) Keith’s shows were one of my mainstays.
It will be interesting to see whether any of the other news show hosts leave in support of Keith, or because they see early on that dealing with Comcast will be a never ending nightmare.
Maybe this station can start with some “real” journalists and stop their spewing of hate every evening.
Well if that was liberal hate in the evening, How about Fox with their Witch Trial hatred every morning, noon and night. Fox and Friends (morning) Glenn Beck (afternoon) O’Rielly (evening) comes to mind.
why dont you be honest to yourself and recognize the bad behaviour of the departed one ( boiling cauldron of hate radiating from his eyes to his angry lips ) how much hate is enough. how much anger, seething do you need to see every day. fox has its views, but its never spewing as in ‘the worst person’. you really know its true. Keith is a disgrace no matter what point of view you have
If you didn’t see this coming, you weren’t paying attention. The head of Comcast and most of it’s board are virulent right wing extremists. Look for more sweeping changes in the very near future. Maddow is gone within six months, most likely she’ll quit after being told what to say one too many times. The fact that our media is now controlled by only seven major corporations, down from twenty nine in 1985, speaks to America’s imminent demise from a democracy to an oligarchy. Fucking Orwell was right.
As someone who was an ardent Republican, back when the religious and constitutional extremists were shunned and considered part of the “nut-wing” of the party, to see how utterly corrupt, anti-American and anti-democracy they’ve become, makes me weep for the America that once was.
Yeah, those constitutional extremists are dangerous all right. Always demanding that government work within its lawful boundaries. It’s terrible.
Yeah? Well while you’re doing your “weeping,” you might want to send a couple of boxes of Kleenex over to your pal Olberman, since that virulent hatemonger is likely shedding a few tears of his own right about now.
I must say, this is marvelous poetic justice. Olbermasn spent untold hours trying to destroy the life and career of Sarah Palin because she committed the unpardonable sin of NOT sharing his political views. But Sarah ends up making $14 mil. last year, while Oblerman is headed for the unemployment line. It appears that karma is indeed a bitch on wheels. Mr. Olberman and his ilk would be wise to get out of her path.
Let me hold your hand Keith and carry your tissue as they cut the checks for %7,000,000 that they must pay you as you await your contract ending repulican fixing spending at its best
Yeah Sarah couldn’t handle Alaska so now she just goes to the Bank with her bags of tea from people who put money ahead of country, people and the less fortunate—I hope I wake up and find that this is just another sick Hollywood production beecause it surely is not a comedy…except a comedy of errors!
Are they accepting bags of tea as bank deposits these days? You’re kidding. I thought she was depositing her $14 MIL in hard cold cash honestly earned from her book sales and speaking fees. See, the way things work in this country is as follows: SHE gets to espouse her beliefs and Olbermann gets to espouse his. The PUBLIC then gets to decide which positions THEY choose to embrace. For more concrete examples of this practice, see the results of the Nov 2 elections (and Olberman’s pitiful ratings).
i canceled comcast and went with u-verse! much better service and a strong signal! now i’m going to get my news from the BBC!
If you move to England, the reception is excellent. I suggest you pack up.
nah you should stay. Cant leave this country to the Teabaggers.
Why don’t you go you NAZI piece of trash?
Antiestablishment? Anti-conservative only. His network is overwhelmingly psycho-left, as off in the head as Hannity is toward the Right. This bias doesn’t cause folks to kill, but it’s this polarizing, all or nothing ideologue manner than leads sheeple to vote with their hearts and not their heads. This country would be better off without the likes of him on the Left and Right.
Actually, people like Olbermann should be given all the air-time they want. Listening to their idiotic rantings reminds everyone just how unhinged they are. They can do more damage under the radar.
Overwhelmingly “psycho-left”. Interesting. I actually appreciate someone like Maddow who uses actual facts and figures in her debates, rather than someone like Glenn Beck, who makes his facts up from his revised history. Never was much of a fan of Olbermann, but who cares?…
Let’s see. Keith is intelligent, handsome, neat, witty, interesting and has millions of fans. So MSNBC lets him go. Have they lost their minds? One less viewer here.
Oleberman has millions of fans? MSNBC doesn’t even have millions of viewers.
Try reading for comprehension. He does not have millions of fans, and your other subjective praises are flat-out loony.
uh oh, they’re down to 9 viewers now
They didn’t let him go. He just left because he wanted to.
Handsome? He’s shaped like a pear. He has that phony, pumped-up radio announcer’s voice.
intelligent? Maybe. Although he seldom came close to making a rational argument on camera. He relied primarily on appeals to emotion and name-calling, not the typical calling-cards of an intelligent man.
millions of fans? He had about 1 million viewers. Do they still teach how to count at Columbia?
They started on the left (Phil Donahue, anyone?); then they went right (I think JoeScar was on in-prime time back then); and left again with new hosts, and found success. It’s mystifying why they’d fire one of their biggest stars…
MSNBC was far from a success if ratings are any gauge of popularity. The ratings from Drudge, right below the link to this story:
NEWS RACE
THURS. JAN. 20, 2011
FOXNEWS O’REILLY 2,918,000
FOXNEWS HANNITY 2,079,000
FOXNEWS BAIER 1,940,000
FOXNEWS SHEP 1,786,000
FOXNEWS BECK 1,780,000
FOXNEWS GRETA 1,460,000
MSNBC OLBERMANN 1,106,000
CNN PIERS 1,025,000
MSNBC MADDOW 976,000
MSNBC O’DONNELL 855,000
MSNBC SCHULTZ 760,000
CNN COOPER 740,000
MSNBC HARDBALL 700,000
Yea but after shut-ins, Old Farts, and people that couldn’t form an opinion on their own without an step-by-step instructions. Number 1 for people that don’t have time to sit in front of the TV and wring their hands….. Well I’ll be darn! Countdown!
HAHAHAHAHA!
The single most important aspect these asshats who cite ratings forget (besides their obvious lack of critical thinking): Fox is basic cable, therefore cheaper, MSNBC is a premium channel which is more expensive. So not too many Fox viewers are going to put the double wide in jeopardy just to listen to what they’re too frightened to hear & too ignorant to understand.
Yeah, no doublewide here… your outnumbered and it pisses you off, your comments are ignorant and not worth jack. STFU stupid a**.
lmao. that’s not true–i have basic cable and get MSNBC, but DO NOT get FOX News, so what are you talking about? i wish i did get Fox, but i don’t watch enough tv to upgrade.
Oh,I guess you mean the “shut-ins and old farts” of the greatest generation?
Unbelieveable disrespect for those who know what freedom is and what has to be sacrificed for liberty.
Blow it out your ass, you peanut brained fascist.
Amazing how liberals consistently resort to thinly veiled argumentum ad hominem, and apply their ideas in a completely inconsistent way.
Is this the “civility” all you liberals were whining about last week?
Jay, why do you feel it necessary to belittle. Are you compensating for something. You should really have paid more attention to your masters voice while it was on the air. I will give Keith the credit he deserves. He was a loquacious bag of wind. You should try it sometime. It might improve your vocabulary.
What a pleasant surprise! He really irritated me – I didn’t watch his show – but it’s nice to know he’s not out there spewing his vile anymore. Thnis is a great first step in the call to tone down the rhetoric in America.
Grandma in Delaware – a happy Grandma now
Maybe the New Civility has run amuck…
Keith Olbermann is a total nut, but I liked watching his rants. The problems with MSNBC are Chris Matthews and that ED Schultz guy. They just bitch and complain the entire show
