Paramount and Marvel Studios have issued new images of Chris Evans’ retro-style Captain America: The First Avenger and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. The latter hits theaters first, with Paramount unleashing the hammer-swinging warrior May 6. Captain America follows July 22.

Can’t wait till next Golden Globes season, when THOR is nominated for BEST COMEDY.
So bad….
both look so bad. I’ll just wait for 2012 comics movies.
Cap’n America looks like he’s wearing pull ups over a onesie, not cute. Thor looks like Sabertooth with a weave and fabulous red cloak.
Snark, snark, snark. Go shoot yourselves. Both look better than expected, especially Cap. Love the helmet/mask. Thor should have bare arms like the comic to show his guns, it would be sweet to have some lightning crackle from his hammer but whatever. Looking better than Green Lantern that’s for sure!
These won’t do particularly well. The wider audience doesn’t care about either character. It would be nice to see the end of this played out trope.
Don’t count out Chris Evans. The guy’s been doing SOLID work for a couple of years now, regardless of BO results.
He has the chops, and will be A-List soon enough.
Is Cap set during WWII? I haven’t been following the news about it. What people tend to forget is that artists tend to go for the simplest thing to draw (or at least they used to), so Cap’s costume never reflected what it would be like to create it *in real life*. What I see in those photos is the *real life* interpretation of the costume. It’s not bad. Has a certain style, although it highlights the ridiculousness of the helmet wings.
The Dark Knight set the bar pretty high for comic book adaptations. 2012 will mark the end of the era. It started with the awful Iron Man 2. It will continue with Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor. Dark Knight Rises will be plagued with production problems. The Avengers will be the final blow.
Until I get a conformation that The Dark Knight Rises is shooting in Chicago, my expectations are not that high.
What difference does it shooting in Chicago make?
In The Dark Knight, so much of Chicago played a part in the overall feel and atmosphere of Gotham City. Especially in the opening of The Dark Knight, and the sequences with Batmobile / Batcycle racing through the city. Shooting on location and the beautiful architecture of the city really made a difference. Batman Begins also shot mostly in Chicago with more work done on sound stages than The Dark Knight. Shooting in Chicago would make the trilogy more consistent in the overall look of the Batman films.
There is a rumor of The Dark Knight Rises shooting in New Orleans for tax purposes. I hope that does not happen.
They’re shooting all over the world including London and Japan
I highly doubt they shoot in New Orleans just for “tax reasons”. If they shoot there, it has to do with the script requiring it.
Chris Nolan is a god right now in Hollywood. And he is known to pay attention to detail. So much so that he prefers shooting effects than cgi’ing them.
I’m saying all that to say, if Nolan wants to shoot in Chicago, it WILL be shot in Chicago.
remember back in the glory days of cinema when Roger Corman was left to produce crappy comic book projects?
Given that, as a nation, we’ve gone from driving the Soviets (located nextdoor) from their bloody, corrupt occupation of Afghanistan where they sought to control the country and its resources to now occupying Afghanistan ourselves (from across the world) in order to control the country and its resources… maybe the international market for a “superhero” called “Captain America” just ain’t gonna be that robust?
Wow, what a mistaken and overly simplistic view of why we’re in Afghanistan.
I take it these will follow the classic Marvel cinema formula of having the hero fight a clone or copy of himself at the end just to establish his own identity. It worked for Iron Man and Hulk so why change the formula.
What if Aronofsky wasn’t wasting his time on a Wolverine sequel, but Moon Knight in black and white 3D for Marvel?
Joss Whedons script for The Avengers will probably be phenomenal.
Pretty much
i don’t understand WHY the focus on making all these comics LIVE ACTION?? … America has proven they will pay for animation! …and god knows they NEED it!
I think the Captain America name is robust enough. Just read today that the practice of killing newborns is up in Pakistan. As horrible as our country may seem, it ain’t that. A lot of us hold on dearly to what Captain America represents or should represent, recognize the atrocities of our country, and we want to rectify them. Maybe others should do the same. Because Captain Pakistan isn’t very popular here either.
Give it up for Thor!!It looks absolutely great. I have seen snippets of the movie in local theaters in LA. I can’t wait to sit down in the dark theater and take it all in. You know how you get the “yips” standing over a 3 foot putt in golf? Well that is what I feel like 24 hours a day thinking about this movie. Yip here Yip there. May 6th can’t come fast enough. Thor can’t live without it!!
BTD
CAP AMERICA has potential. Chris Evans has charisma to boot (enough to rival even RDJ himself–at Chris’s age). He’s consistently the most entertaining actor in even the dullest of films (Fantastic 4, Push, Losers, etc) plus he has tons o’ credit for his turn in Danny Boyle’s Sunshine and Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim.
I’ll reserve judgement until I see the trailer, but the potential is definitely there.
As for THOR…..barf! Everything about this films wreaks of cheese. What the hell happened to Chris Hemsworth since his brilliant turn in Star Trek?? Is he even the same actor? Every line of dialog he speaks in the trailer WREEEAKKKS!!!
Wise photo choice for “Thor”, that gold background might be prophetic. Generally CGI is never as good as intended, but some of what I saw in the trailer looked pretty good. I think “Thor” will be in the running for visual FX awards.
I hear the BUF is doing the VFX work and they are always amazing – Thor is gonna rock!
Is this one of those films that was meant to be a serious action/drama but ends up being a comedy? You know, like “The Perfect Storm”?
Was iffy on Thor ’till I saw the trailer online. Then I saw it in 3D before Tron. When The Destroyer came on screen, I was done. Branagh will bring the Shakespearean thunder. Kirby himself would be proud. ‘Nuff said!
I think Paul Walker would have made a way better, more rugged Cap, but like Jack said, Evans has been putting his time in and I’m willing to give him a shot.
And I agree with Frank, America is still the light of the free world, so enough with the snark. Cap is relevant. And this is coming from a die-hard, Dem-voting, pro-Obama blue-stater. In fact the only anti-Americans I see are the ones who want our President to fail. I’m not scared of al-Queda, I’m scared of a psycho teabagger taking his “second amendment remedies.”
That is exactly what happened with Avatar and the rest is history, literally!
Will we get our first glimpse of Captain America during the Superbowl?
Good Grief. I shudder to think what the world would be like if not for America. We are a flawed people but no other country can match the good this nation has done to to liberate people and promote freedom worldwide. When both individual charitable contributions of our citizens and corporations are added to the international aid provided by the government, the United States of America is the world’s leader in its committment to provide sustenance and hope for people the world over. It was true during WWII and it is true today. The character of Captain America stands for everything good about this country and I hope they do not downplay the symbolism like in Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns.” “Truth, Justice and the American way, ” not, “…and all that stuff.” I’ll never forget the image of Christopher Reeve as Superman, flying with the flag in Superman II.
o.m.g. I can’t believe I actually agree with everything Aaron just said.
Hell must’ve frozen over.
Is it because I am too old? Enough already with this! I don’t mind the idea of bringing graphic novels to the big screen as it seems like a natural but haven’t we had enough of live action comic books by now? The Wayan bros need to spoof this genre. It needs it so badly.
I don’t see any of the gravitas in Evans as an actor to pull this specific role. this is a box office move plain and simple. If he drops the ball on the acting chops…not even the big CGI stuff will save CAP. I really think they should’ve gone with an unknown for this role…possibly an actor outside the US. The script had better be good for this…because the mythology itself for CAP is really hard to screw up. Hemsworth is a diff. story for THOR. Maybe it is because of his relatively unknown audience awareness as a celeb than Evans. Let’s face it…especially in the kill or be killed world of audience fans craze for the comics…you better be able to pull your weight…IN THE MOMENT…and not what ya bring to the table from previous awareness.
Captain America looks fantastic the movie is going to be a very big hit. The 1940′s setting is much better than updating him. Joe Johnston is in his element on this movie he did a great job on the Rocketeer but that character wasn’t nearly as well known as Cap is and Disney screwed up the marketing on Rocketeer horribly. They didn’t know how to sell it. I predict 200 million domestic for Captain America and another 400 million foreign.
Um… Steve.
Or is it Joe?
ROCKETEER? are you cussing serious? That DAWG went though more test screenings than Warren Beatty did women. But I digress before I begin.
I got one word for ya:
WOLFMAN.
Cap is going to be huge folks…if the film is good. The anticipation level is on par with the first Spidey film. He doesn’t just appeal to comic book nerds. Cappy’s got his shield firmly planted in the mainstream.
I’m looking forward to Captain America, assuming the trailer doesn’t suck. I like the retro setting and the look of the film that I’ve seen from the photos. Chris Evans took a while to grow on me, but I enjoyed him in Losers and think he could work if he doesn’t spend too much time smirking.
Thor…good god. Everything about that movie looks horrendous. Remember Frankenstein? Kenneth Branagh cannot direct a big action movie without immersing himself and everything else in a giant tub of Velveeta.
