EXCLUSIVE: Nickelodeon has picked up its flagship animated series SpongeBob SquarePants for a ninth season with a 26-episode order, which will push the veteran series over the 200th episode mark. Season 9 is slated to air in 2012. SpongeBob has been TV’s No.1 animated series with kids 2-11 for 10 consecutive years. It also ranks as basic cable’s top animated show in total viewers and as MTV Networks’ most widely distributed property ever with sales in 171 territories. “SpongeBob‘s success in reaching over 200 episodes is a testament to creator Stephen Hillenburg’s vision, comedic sensibility and his dynamic, lovable characters,” said Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. SpongeBob creator Hillenburg executive produces the series alongside Paul Tibbitt who has been on the show since after the pilot, serving as a director and writer on for its first three seasons and eventually taking over day-to-day responsibilities from Hillenburg. “We never imagined we would be on for that long but we’re going to keep going,” Tibbitt said. “The trick is to try to keep the episodes funny and simple and press from there.” The Nov. 11 SpongeBob special, Mystery with a Twistery, drew 6.6 million viewers, ranking as the year’s top animated telecast with kids 2-11. The series’ next special, Legends of Bikini Bottom, an hour-long anthology, will premiere on Jan. 28.

Is Hillenburg still not getting a dime from merchandising? Nickelodeon is despicable.
There’s literaly no end for Spongebob in sight.
Wasn’t spongebob on in the 90′s? How is 2012 only the 9th season?
because the show debuted in 1999 and most of the seasons were 2 years
This could not have happened to a nicer, insanely creative guy than Stephen Hillenburg. I remember walking into a dumpy, out-of-the-way office at Nick’s “west coast office” (in a North Hollywood business building that also housed an x-ray technician’s school) and meeting Steve, Tim Hill, Derek Drymon, Nick Jennings, Doug “Mr.” Lawrence and of course Tom Kenny when I was hired as the line producer for the “SpongeBoy SquarePants” pilot. That’s not a typo, that was the original working title. Thank god they had to change it. Then came the wonderful task of hiring some of the brightest artists, writers, actors, musicians and production crew in the world, all under the steady guidance of Steve. On the network side, Eric Coleman was outstanding as the development exec. Most importantly, Herb Scannell, Albie Hecht, Kevin Kay, Mary Harrington and all of the Nick execs did everything they could to encourage Steve and the crew to create what we now know is an icon. But nobody was looking for the Next Great Icon; we all just wanted something that made us laugh and hopefully, made kids laugh, too.
I miss “Rugrats”. I don’t get “Spongebob”.
There is not anything to “get” about Spongebob. I think too many people read too much into it….such as Spongebob and Patrick are gay. I just look at the show and watch….love it!!!!
Great news for everyone – especially Tom Kenny, one of the nicest and funniest guys around.
I dodged watching TV after the disappointment of LOST. Had a baby, starting watching children’s programing and ‘discovered’ Spongebob… forget about it being a kids show – this is one of the funniest shows on TV, PERIOD.
I love LOVE this show… keep up the excellent work, and show the rest of TV how to put quality on the air.
While I don’t know him personally, Hillenburg has been a jerk to the journalism department of his alma mater Humboldt State University. Our reporters have repeatedly attempted to contact him over the years and he steadfastly refuses to grant interviews to either our newspaper or our magazine. The idea of course is to highlight graduates from the university who have made good in their careers, and apparently, Hillenburg wants no part of it.
why not write an article about your post on this site?
FYI: Hillenburg was featured in a cover story of Humboldt Magazine in Spring 2006.
maybe they should finally get Tom Kenny an Emmy nomination…

I agree with them! WHY? was SpongeBob renewed?
Who wrote that article, a 12 year old?
To critique every character and analyze their interactions is hysterical.
The show has a huge fanbase and is still the highest rated show on kids television.
Why was it renewed? Because it’s huge.
That’s great. Now can they PLEASE bring back Rocko’s Modern Life?
My children adore spongebob and I think that it should go on for many years. Even I love to sometimes spend family time around the tv watching an amusing show that will make my kids happy.
Re. the journalism school: Hillenburg is just holding out for a nice clarinet.
It’s the BEST DAY EVER!
Who lives in a Pineapple under the sea?
Spongebob is awesome it’s going to have a second movie in 2014.
