Well, with guest Ricky Gervais CNN’s Piers Morgan didn’t quite smackdown Sean Hannity. “If I don’t smack you down tonight with Howard, I’ll take you on Thursday with Ricky Gervais. love Piers,” Morgan tweeted to the Fox News host on Tuesday before his second show with Howard Stern. That night, he edged Hannity in 25-54, which has remained Morgan’s only ratings victory in his premiere week. With newsmaker Ricky Gervais as a guest last night, Morgan averaged 1 million viewers, slightly down from Wednesday night for a new low. He lost both the viewer and demo race to Hannity, drawing about half of what his Fox News competitor got. In 25-54, Morgan bounced back from the low on Wednesday. Morgan also returned to second place in total viewers after falling behind MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Wednesday. Here are the rankings for the cable news networks at 9 PM:

Sorry he doesn’t understand American or American Humor. His show will fail. Look for him to be out on his butt by the end of the year
Piers’ simpering please-oh-please-like-me-like-me-like-me-I’m-nicer-than-my-guest approach was increasing hard to stomach as the interview progressed. Gervais was delightful despite Piers. Not a hopeful sign for the show’s future.
I like Piers. he needs time to “hone” his skills. But get a new set – the set is distracting and horrible!
I mourn the days of CNN before the “personality”-oriented programming they’ve chosen to live or die by. I’m a fairly open-minded, political-center type but CNN is poisoning itself, and fast. Hosts like Eliot Spitzer and Piers Morgan make me actively AVOID the channel – much like the erstwhile Headline News became unwatchable with Nancy Grace and Joy Behar.
More like Nancy Disgrace. Did anyone see Gerry Spences book about her?
What’s up with the play by play on Piers?
The play-by-play is a no-brainer. He’s replacing Larry King, a guy who’s show dominated the airwaves for nearly a quarter-century. Morgan is also a new personality, one that is very unlike King.
Also, King was more-or-less forced to step aside, so the play-by-play is really a Conan/Leno sequel…though hopefully not as toxic.
I didn’t mind the limited glimpses I’ve seen of Morgan prior to him taking over for King. But his incessant, overly smug promos really put me off.
It really seems like CNN can’t do anything right. They need a complete overhaul of their entire style and lineup before I would even consider watching them.
I only seen the Condi Rice interview and was not impressed with his condesending questions. He seems rather smug but unlike Larry King I do believe he does some research before he has a guest on and knows who he is talking to.
I forgot about the Ricky interview but from seeing him at the Golden Globes awards perhaps CNN should hire him.
If I was CNN I would look to local news talent not ex-Governors known for their client number but local talent like Paul Majors from California or Ian Punnett from coast to coast. Both of them are very good at interviewing, wich seems to be a lost talent and also both have a good sense of humor. I would replace their rather boring Showbiz Tonite with Jason Mathesion and Alexis Thompson who have a local showbiz radio show on a Hubbard radio station and he does entertaiment news for the local Fox TV station ….CNN should try a giant revamping of their programing.
Who hired their lineup anyway? also a show with bloggers would be fun powerlineblog.com just left his radio show that had many major author interviews and lots of humor, mix it up CNN you can be Number 2.
“I only seen the Condi Rice interview…”
This is how I know you’re a FOX viewer.
