In a move that’s not exactly surprising, Summit Entertainment brought back Jon and Erich Hoeber to write another installment of Red, the overachieving Robert Schwentke-directed action film that had been widely spurned around town because studios were nervous building such a film around an AARP-aged cast. Insiders at Summit confirm a report that the scribes have made a deal, though Schwentke and stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Mary Louise Parker still have to be dealt with.
At the same time, Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly told Austrian publication Krone he’s already trying to get his film career on track and is looking for age-appropriate roles. “In the future I have to adapt my roles to my age. Clint Eastwood also has done it in the same way. Extreme fighting or shooting is not possible anymore.” Ah-nuld is resuscitating two projects he has held onto since the 1990s. One is With Wings As Eagles, which Randall Wallace wrote based on his father-in-law’s recollection of a German soldier ordered to execute American prisoners in WWII who instead helped them escape. It’s similar to the good-Nazi terrain Tom Cruise covered in Valkyrie. Schwarzenegger almost got it made before calling off to take time off for a health issue in the late 1990s. The other script drawing speculation is Crusade, a pricey period pic with a script by Walon Green that has long been considered one of the best unmade screenplays. That film got closest in the waning days of Carolco. Mario Kassar had the dough to make one big budget film, but inexplicably bypassed Crusade and made Cutthroat Island, even when Michael Douglas stepped out because director Renny Harlin and star Geena Davis (then a couple) made hims role less significant. Matthew Modine stepped in and the film became an epic flop that sank Carolco. Can Arnold, once the most bankable action star in the world, regain his standing after being away running the state of California most of the last decade? Who could have predicted that sequels to Red and The Expendables would be so viable?

Not sure what’s so surprising. I would argue there are more bankable stars over the age of 50 than under.
Considering that tired old freemason could barely make it up a flight of stairs in his last movie, does bringing 80s hog Arnold back really seem like a good idea?
GO
AWAY
Red was a fluke. Don’t push it.
Arnie started his career as a muscle man who was only good for the action roles, but one of the reasons that he became as successful was that he’s incredibly charismatic and have a great sense of humour which became one of his trademarks in his career by the time he made it to the 90s. He proved that he can truthfully play powerful, cold, alpha-male kind of characters. One example, Terminator. I think he would do well playing powerful, authoritarian roles like Kings, commanders, etc that fits his age.
It’s easy to make fun of Cutthroat Island but in the face of Disney’s Pirates movies it’s pretty capricious to do so. Ah timing. It had other problems but the movie was crushed when Michael Douglas bowed out.
Arnold would be a welcome comeback. I hope he teams up with Cameron or Verhoeven to do some ridiculous R rated action spectacle. If the Expendables success said anything is that there are a lot of folks who want their back to basics action. None of the promised Hollywood newcomers like Vin Diesel, Paul Cena or Duane Johnson have fulfilled the vacuum left by him. Not one.
For what’s it worth, it’s John Cena and Dwayne Johnson…
I was hoping for Jingle All the Way 2, but i guess this will do.
It just seems a little sad that Arnold is considering movie acting again after being a 2 term governor ,especially at his age.
Maybe it’s snobbery on my part, but it’s not like he did art films ,he must have plenty of money.. Seems undignified to say the least.
At 28, I love me some Arnie as I grew up with his movies. His better films have a place in my childhood as they do for most people my age. A lover of cinema and filmmakers like Tarkovsky and Herzog etc, I can still appreciate a good Schwarzennegger flick though we haven’t seen one in a while.
The scripts mentioned above would be great, somewhat edgy comeback roles for the former governor. However, the films will only work with good directors at the helm. Arnie needs a big name in the directors chair to keep him tip top and keep him safe.
If that happens, I”ll be there opening day.
Here we go with the same old “On Golden Pond” & “The African Queen” argument.
Will people pay money to see old folks on the screen?
YES!!
There are multiple films in recent history that prove that a good STORY can add significant money to the bottom line just as much as any old computerized effects action film (Well, okay, not quite as MUCH money, but enough to be noted on the record)
And as for a few more examples of AARP actors contributing to the bottom lines of studio ledgers…. let’s take a look at Eastwood, who at age 80 has become a noted world class director in just the past decade alone, above and beyond his beloved grimacing characters of the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s.
And how about William Shatner? Forever cemented in history as Captain Kirk, he can still pull in some ratings with his newest series, S#$@ My Dad Says. And he’s 79 !!
Just sayin’……
Couldn’t agree more with this post!
Arnie and Verhoeven make magic together. I’d pay good money to watch them dry dishes together, let alone make a movie.
When Arnie was first elected I was hoping that Crusade project would get picked up again if he went back into acting. I totally forgot about it until Mike just mentioned it.
After former Governor Schwarzenegger’s cowardly last-minute commutation of the sentence of Estaban Nunez, the murderous thug son of Schwarzenegger’s political “buddy” and former California Assembly Speaker, Fabian Nunez, I wouldn’t cross the street to piss on Arnold Schwarzenegger if he was on fire.
FUCK YOU ARNOLD.
FUCK YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL, YOU COWARDLY, GUTLESS, SPINELESS PIECE OF SHIT.
Von Stauffenberg, whom Tom Cruise played in Valkyrie, wasn’t a Nazi. He was a member of the aristocracy, so he wasn’t required to be in the nazi party in order to become a high ranking officer.
SPOILER
Not sure they really need to do much negotiating with Morgan Freeman considering his character’s fate in RED 1.
The world is not populated exclusively by twenty-somethings, why should a decent script need to pretend so? Older actors have more experience in the craft, how can that be bad? Arnold, I was looking forward to seeing what happened to “Conan” as a king, will that story ever be told?
Arnold should be exiled back to Austria he wrecked California’s economy we are billions of dollars in debt now after his seven years of horrible governatoring. He says he lost 200 million in “moofie money” go make your “moofies” in Austria you big dumb clown.
It would be great to see Arnold back at his Predator-movie size. It’s possible since Lou Ferrigno in recent photos is that big. Well, Lou has been bigger than Arnold for more than two decades. The first time I saw Arnold smaller than Lou was in T-2. Remember than Arnold beat Lou in the Mr. Olympia contest so it’s a shame. Arnold in Predator is far more ripped and bigger than he was in T-2. This would blow away any doubts about his age and any doubts about those unfair beach photos that where on line after he had surgery.
I love Arnold films and I don’t want him to come back smaller than Stallone (Stallone has really been hitting the gym lately). Did everyone see him at the Golden Globes. Stallone was bigger than Wallberg, and the young guys playing Thor and Captain America.
That small size that Arnold was in in End of Days was a joke. If Arnold’s agents or managers are reading the forums than I hope they get him the message to hit the gym and get back to as close as he can to his Mr. Olympia size, since the film: Pumping Iron was what made him famous in the first place. If Lou Ferrigno and Hulk Hogan can still be gigantic and ripped in there golden years than so can Arnold. I really want Arnold to succeed. Him getting big again is the key.
Give the man a break he is in his 60s. He should take roles that suit him. An rough old army commander or the elder King Conan are perfect. No one should expect him to look like he did 20 years ago, sheesh.
FYI Mike Fleming Stauffenberg was not a Nazi. That was the whole point of the movie. To prove ignorant Americans like you that not all Germans, all German soldiers were Nazis and they hated Hitler.
Bryan Singer made a great movie, I am sure Arnie will too.
Remember back in the day…”Don’t trust anyone over 35!” Well, now it’s back at’cha because under 35 is boring!
If you look at the list of the best movies of 2010, most of them star people north of 40. Hollywood’s biggest mistake has been to assume that people only want to see 20s and teens actors. There is a huge audience that’s underserved which is older than that.
That WINGS script is terrific. Not as emotional as Schindler’s list, more of a dramatic thriller structure, but a really great, clean, minimal read–unlike a lot of the atmospheric sleight of hand going on in today’s scripts. If it gets a decent update and a solid director, he’ll get an award. The other one might be past his time.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was always more ‘living sculpture’ than skilled actor; his best expression was deadpan and his best performances involved adding physicality to mise-en-scene. Hence the performance-defining line from another character (which I paraphrase): “He is Conan. He does not cry. So I must cry for him.”
Which is my roundabout way of saying that without the acting chops of Willis and co, the guy’s gettin’ too old for this shit.
Correction to my above post! I just recalled reading that a new version of “Conan” was being filmed overseas. SHIT. I was looking forward to Arnold’s version of the trilogy.
What is the premise of the “Crusade” script? It’s the first I’ve ever heard of it.
Arnold is in pretty bad physical shape though after 8 years away from movies. He’s going to have to get back in shape for film, otherwise we’re all going to see how flabby he is right now.
Both Red and The Expendables played on the fact the characters were a bit long in the tooth. Is this also the case with the projects Arnold’s considering?
