EXCLUSIVE: Waka waka waka! Pac-Man, is headed to reality TV. Merv Griffin Entertainment has teamed with leading game maker Namco Bandai Games America, which owns the Pac-Man brand, to develop an unscripted series based on the hugely popular video game. This marks the first major foray into TV for Pac-Man whose only previous TV presence was a short-lived animated series in the early 1980s. The project also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the best-selling game and 1980s pop culture icon.
The Pac-Man reality series is envisioned as a “big, crazy Wipeout-type event with a lot of energy,” said Merv Griffin’s president of TV Roy Bank. “The idea we have is to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world’s biggest game of tag to television.” Bank is executive producing the project, which is now being taken out to the broadcast networks, with David Russo, who brought the idea to him.

Delroy Lindo would be great as the bouncing pretzel.
Great idea and very relevant to what is going on today. A giant yellow robotic menace symbolizing Corporate America, gobbling, absorbing and eradicating anything that gets in its way. Lap it up, Useful Idiots!
duuuuuuuuuuuuuumb!
Worst.
Idea.
Ever.
Am I gonna have to put quarters in my TV?
That is an SNL skit waiting to happen.
This is a terrible idea.
Holy Christ that’s a shitty idea…which makes it perfect for Roy Bank.
Please tell me that this is a joke? A “Pac-Man Reality Series”? I can imagine a possible “Pac-Man” type challenge on Survivor, but this is horrible. NEXT!
It sounds like a pretty good gameshow premise, sort of 80s+90s kids show ish, like the Legends of the hidden temple, or Guts. Have one kid need to collect a number of flags while 4 other kids run around the maze trying to catch and stop him? Have some checkpoint to be the super power pills…
Son of a…and my producing partner & I just got the rights to Pong.
I hope it fails, so I can see a headline like “Network Sends Pac-Man Packing”.
Wokka!
Or is that wakka-wakka-wakka-wakka..?
Ms. Pac-Man was better.
Oh don’t worry… That will be the spinoff show.
Any reality TV series that resembles Wipeout, that
has to be a future hit show. I just hope they know
what they’re getting themselves into with Pac-Man.
I’m guessing this will probably debut on G4 TV,
the semi-video game channel. Then again, every video
game related project that’s been planned for TV and/
or the theaters based on a classic game has been
cancelled, so as promising as it sounds, I wouldn’t
hold my breath just yet.
Is Wipeout a Reality series? Its kind of a gameshow isn’t it? Or some hybrid, like Sasuke (Ninja Warrior). I mean you play a game for a prize…But I guess its not really like a traditional gameshow.
if done right, this could be a great idea. seems like Pacman is known everywhere and highly recognizable and totally fun. People need fun, outragious shows like Wipeout, but something totally different. this is pretty cool. why bag on the idea until you know the creative. its a big brand and the tee-shirt can say – eat me. Ha!
Russo’s show w/Mark Burnett was amazing “Combat Missions”-love to see how he brings excitement to Pacman
Networks: please stop green-lighting crap like this!!!
Couldn’t be any worse an idea than Captain Power, I guess.
This has already been done. I remember seeing video online of a Pac-Man maze brought to life (ghosts and all) a couple years ago.
Yes, this was done YEARS ago on a show called GAME ON. Two comics competing in video game related challenges. They did Space Invaders with water balloons too. Ahead of it’s time I guess.
Club Paradise…look it up.
I’m personally waiting for Dig Dug, or Q-Bert. Maybe Defender or Berzerk. Berzerk was about robots killing humans so, yeah, that one.
Plus ten points for the Dig-Dug reference.
How about reality galaga, with a real spaceship…
I heard they’ll also be running a True Hollywood Story on Pinky. Drug use, spousal abuse, alcohol…It’s just sad.
Dragon’s Lair.
Did you know Pac-Man used to be called Puck-man?
Win.
There was an animated Pac-Man Christmas special called “Christmas Comes to PacLand” that aired in the 1980′s.
If PAC MAN FEVER isn’t the theme song, this show is doomed to fail.
