In a development that pushes back the start of The Hobbit a bit, Peter Jackson was admitted today night to Wellington Hospital with acute stomach pains and underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer. According to a statement from the production, “Sir Peter is currently resting comfortably and his doctors expect him to make a full recovery. Sir Peter’s surgery is not expected to impact on his directing commitment to The Hobbit beyond a slight delay to the start of filming.” Between all the turmoil of: Guillermo del Toro dropping out as director; Jackson replacing him; MGM freezing production while it went into bankruptcy; local unions blackballing The Hobbit which almost pushed the production out of New Zealand; why would Jackson be getting ulcers? Here’s to a speedy recovery, Sir Pete.

Ulcers are caused by bacteria and sometimes smoking. It’s a disproved misconception that stress is a factor. The more you know!
Stress doesn’t cause ulcers, but aggravates them by raising the acidity level in your stomach.
Maybe the stress has caused him to take up smoking.
It’s true that theres strong correlation between ulcer an Helycobacter pylori, the bacteria you were talking about. But I think stress can affect ulcers progressions, as same as smoking.
Poor Peter Jackson, I hope you recover soon!
Sauron strikes!
@Amanda Kiwinerd
I didn’t know that. Thanks!
Still, I imagine all of this stress hasn’t been good for him.
Coincidentally JRR Tolkien died of a perforated ulcer. J. R. R. Tolkien (1892–1973, aged 81) suffered from a perforated ulcer and died on September 2, 1973. Wikipedia
How strange a coincidence is that??
it’s not an ulcer. that’s just spin.
Jackson had gastric bypass surgery and lasik vision surgery. He didn’t drop 80 pounds and stop wearing glasses because of healthy eating.
you can look it up. ain’t passing judgment on the guy, just stating facts.
Why would anyone smoke bacteria? That sounds ridiculous.
Tolkein died from a perforated ulcer in 1973 I believe.
Hope he gets well soon. Peter loves to work, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back to work immediately after leaving the hospital. Usually ulcer surgery recovery is like 4 or 5 weeks.
I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty certain stress can make ulcers worse (if they don’t cause them). And PJ has been under incredible stress over the past six months, and he’s not as young as he used to be. Maybe he should step down from The Hobbit.
”Maybe he should step down from The Hobbit.”
Noooooooooooooooooo!
Don’t give him any crazy ideas.
Does he make his PR person refer to him in press releases as “Sir Peter?” Am I the only one who think that sounds kind of ridiculous?
who is his PR person?
No, I’m with you.
RE the “ulcer” — I’m not buying it, either. Rather, he had his stomach stapled. Next time, try exercise and a sensible diet. It works, makes you cut down on your smoking and fit for work. Win-win all around. Sure a personal trainer should be in your budget, err Sir.
Apparently, you haven’t realized PJ has been healthy and skinny since 2005.
Isn’t an ulcer a hole or tear in the stomach lining? My doctor told me that stress creates excess stomach acid, eating away at the stomach lining. Severe cases cause internal bleeding. If he had surgery for this, instead of medication, it must have been pretty severe.
T thought that he was healthy as anything-what gives? I hope that he pulls out of this, and gets well (You hear me, Mr. Jackson? Get well! I don’t want to be the only chronically sick person this year!)
For me, Peter does not drink enough water
(The ideal amount for our body is of a 1.5lL every day) if you drink just enough water to our body is removed from the cells, and one of the first problems that arises is that of ulcers and heartbur…
This is caused as a fallout of his gastric bypass surgery for weight loss. I know because I almost died from the same thing. Basically, it sounds like one of the “connections” from his bypass surgery came loose, as mine did.
