Piers Morgan started off promisingly as a close No. 2 cable news program at 9PM in its Monday premiere, then fell 40% on Tuesday but still finished second. Last night, Piers Morgan Tonight (1 million total viewers, 239,000 of them in the 25-54 demographic) slipped further to finish behind the time slot leader, Fox News’s Sean Hannity (2 million, 565,000 in 25-54) and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow (1.1 million, 221,000 in 25-54). In the demo, Morgan edged Maddow to finish second after topping Hannity with the Howard Stern interview on Tuesday. Between his premiere and his third airing, Morgan lost half of his audience (1 million viewers.) Last night, Morgan featured his first non-showbiz guest, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Tonight he is back to entertainment with controversial Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais. Here are the standings at 9 PM for the past 3 nights:

I’ve never seen Morgan’s show(s)… based on the impression left by the promotional campaign, I doubt I will. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing an over-ripe windbag crash and burn.

The main problem I saw watching Monday and Wednesday, he talks over his guests throughout the entire interview. The continual interuption always cutting off his guest’s responses. And it is no suprise that I really don’t want to know what he thinks about any topic. It’s the guests that are the draw. I gave it a shot, but I don’t think I’ll be tuning in again…….
Yes, I notice he talks over the guest. I think in part he does it when he gets the answer to his question but doesn’t feel the guest needs to elaborate further; he wants to get to the next question to maximize his time with them. It may be more acceptable in England; I don’t know. Having said that, I like him and feel he’s doing a good job.

Talking over your guests when you’ve heard enough is more acceptable in the UK; see Paxman (or indeed any of the ‘Newsnight’ presenters).
It’s accepted in the UK as a way to keep politicians etc. in check, and not allow them to hog air time for their own agenda, but I think the culture in the U.S. is very different in this regard. There’s seems to be a deference to politicians in the U.S. that doesn’t exist in the U.K.

As soon as I realized that the interviews are being taped pretty far in advance, I lost all interest. For a news channel, there should be some immediacy to their primetime programming. Plus, for all the “daring to go there” talk, there’s really been nothing unearthed that’s watercooler worthy.

CNN is on such a serious decline that it is just becoming sad to watch this once great network circle the drain. How could the powers that be over there think that Americans want to spend an hour watching a barely known bloviating self promotoer like Piers Morgan fawn all over and toss softball questions at uninteresting and passe’ guest like Oprah and yesterday’s news Howard Stern? Nothing new or interesting was reveled in his interviews. I predict that Morgan’s show will settle into Larry King numbers and he will be viewed as a semi sucess based on the low expectations of CNN these days.
I grew up watching CNN, it was the only news network I watched. I tuned in during the early 80′s and I was born in 71. I liked them, they were just showing the news and not opinions. Since the early 00′s I switched to Fox, now watching CNN is like watching MSNBC, ABC and CBS. It’s okay becasue more companies are seeing their best interests are with a news company like fox not the others. As their viewers leave so will their cash cows. Maybe the unions will support them instead of advertisors.

If you look at Piers’ first few days, it highlights CNN’s problem. What audience is he targeting? Consider his Monday audience – lets say that they enjoyed the Oprah interview. But no matter how much they enjoyed it, how many Oprah fans will have thought “oh great, Howard Stern”? What if he’d followed up with the Clooney interview? Or even the Rice interview?
FOX News succeeds because it targets a particular audience. Every night and every slot has something that caters to that audience. MSNBC is the same. If CNN isn’t willing to target based on political views, it needs to segment in some other way.
I actually think last nights ratings are more encouraging for CNN than Tuesdays. The drastic shift in audience profile vs Monday’s show made clear that it was some kind of Stern effect that wouldn’t last. Last night, he cleared 1m for an interview with someone who isn’t really a newsmaker these days. Had these numbers been offered to CNN a week ago, they’d have grabbed them. Can he hold these numbers? I don’t think so, not with this format every night.
CNN was once a great organization. It’s now turned into the Obama is great network and has lost a great portion of its audience. Like the netowrks, they reek of eastern limosine liberal ethos. Their stories are all the same: Awww look how the poor minority person has overcome the evil white man. Or, aren’t gay people just wonderful?
There’s nothing wrong with those stories, but we get a steady diet of that crap from CNN. How about a little critical examination of those topics? How about looking to the middle of the country for answers?

I watched the Howard Stern interview and was mildly bored. The Condoleeza interview was tortuously uninteresting. Don’t know anything about this Brit, but CNN has got to find someone more like a ‘Ricky Gervais’ than a ‘Hugh Grant’ to catch my attention.
Does speaking with a British accent make what you are saying more interesting or seem smarter? In a country of over 300 million CNN could not find an interesting, smart well informed interviewer? The problem with the format is that the shows are taped. We already know what was said in the interview, so, there’s no need to watch. Who doesn’t already know that George Cloony (Friday’s yet to be aired interview) caught malaria in Haiti and has since recovered. By the time the show comes on, it’s already yesterday’s news.
That’s the same reason lame magazines like Time and Newsweek are dying. With instant info via cyberspace, there’s no interest in something that happened a few days or weeks ago.
