On the eve of the Monday premiere of MTV’s racy teen drama Skins, TV watchdog the Parents Television Council characterized it as possibly “the most dangerous television show for children that we have ever seen.” Now it is calling on the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary Committees and the Department of Justice to open an investigation for possible child pornography and exploitation on the show, a remake of the British series of the same name. In addition to stressing the sexual content on the show involving cast members as young as 15, (the cast’s ages range from 15-19), PTC also lists 42 depictions and references to drugs and alcohol in the premiere episode alone. Skins premiered to solid ratings on Monday, buoyed by an original Jersey Shore as a lead-in. UPDATE: With pressure mounting, Skins has lost its first advertiser, Taco Bell.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

This show needs to be canceled. Absolutely disgusting.
Deadline… please keep us up to date on this case. Hopefully it’ll get knocked off the air.
Every anonymous comment here is coming from the PTC itself or one of its allied organizations. There are actually only about 30 people in America that are opposed to this show airing, and they’re all from religious groups.
Uh. I’m not with the PTC. So there goes that theory.
Easily could be said that every comment in support is from MTV. See how easy that is?
Its a Cable Netwerk Tv Show… GROW UP!!! Im so Sick of people saying I am for free speach but that hit a nerve… U Cant control what the TV channle plays on there station, but U can control ur remote. And Its not like there is only 2 channels. We have a million channels and if u dont like the show then just turn it off. Grow up. Be a parent and dont let uyr kids watch shows that r to mature for them. I hate Feminest , Liberal Jews.. Get a Life . N& NO ONE CARES ABOUT UR OPINION…. And BTW I Have never even watched this show and I never will, But dont cancle it cause some bitch dont like the content.
Your comment reads like so, “I am a blathering idiot and don’t understand anything, therefor I will spout swear words and tell people to be better parents. I have missed the point and offended Jewish people.”
Who may or may not be watching the show isn’t the point here. It’s about whether the cast members (several of whom are underaged) are being exploited sexually. Even if the point was the content of the show and who should be watching it, you’re still coming off as an idiot. The content of the program, much like Jersey Shore is introducing young people to a moronic “Party all the time, act like an asshole, don’t get an eduction” attitude. I can’t count the number of people I’ve known who’ve nicknamed themselves after Jersey Shore members and gloat about their ability to get extremely intoxicated off several substances and have sex with lots of people. I find it disgusting and I’m not even religious. If this show reaches a 15-18 demographic then it will most likely have a similar effect. Young people idolizing assholes and sluts because the TV told them it’s cool.
Even if the people that don’t want their kids watching this crap do something to prevent their own kids from watching it there are still millions of lazy and simple minded parents who don’t even know this show is on, or don’t care. That’s millions of teens watching and idolizing drug abusing whores and assholes. I’m sorry if I don’t find living in a world where dickheads and hoochies are running around acting like idiots, wasting space, fucking constantly and creating more useless idiots.
The sad fact of the world is that idiots and scumbags always reproduce way more than intelligent and moral people.
I’m anonymous? I’m from the PTC? Uhh ok sure!
Hows abouts I has a soul! And I’m not into child porn. Count me as one of your 30 people against this show, Joe Blow.
its not child poenography get a life i like this show n u wont stop me to watch it so get a fucking live i fucken hate PTC its stupid every1 goes thru that
Oh yeah, a little capitalization never hurts either.
@JoeB: There are actually only about 30 people in America that are opposed to this show airing, and they’re all from religious groups.
Wow,in a nation of 308,745,538 residents, in only three days YOU not only know the exact number of people in the entire country who are opposed to this show (30), but you also know their religious affiliations. !!?? How on earth is a company like Nielsen still in business when an analytical savant like you is hovering about?
Actuall JoeB, there are a number of conservative trolls who habituate this and every other website that allows unmoderated comments. So they’re not necessarily PTC. They’re just *********
@Seth… so I have to be a “conservative” to abhor shows that promote lewd and lascivious behavior, drugs and alcohol abuse amongst underaged minors? I think not. Democratic, liberal lesbian, roe v. wade, Obama-care advocate, right here – you twit. This show is garbage.
Film and TV shows should portray the real world, so I guess, drugs, sex and rock and roll are part of it…
I watched the first episode, and despite my group’s persecution of the show and it’s cast, I have to admit that it felt really genuine to how high school felt and how we lived our lives as teenagers.
A lot of people are simply afraid of the truth.
as opposed to “Liberal Trolls”?
Here’s the thing: this is an Entertainment Site. You know, ENTERTAINMENT the thing that all conservatives hate? You know the party line where Hollywood is a Zionist plot to corrupt the children? By all rights there should be NO conservatives here.
So those that are are clearly trolls. Period. No one has to watch “Skins” or like it, but this “oh, it offends mainstream America blah blah blah” is such utter bull**** is so ridiculous as to hardly merit attention.
Uh, there are a lot more than 30 people upset over this show. This is a disgusting program that endorses and glorifies drug use, unsafe sex, and degenerate behavior by teenagers. Just how much garbage can MTV dump into this culture? They are a soulless organization that pushes boundries for money. They take no responsibily for their programming. Really, this is trash.
I’m not a PTC member or affiliated with MTV- but I do have common sense and there is a simple solution to all your pubescent nagging.
If you’re an “adult” and don’t like the show- pick up that black rectangular thing and press the up or down arrow and change the G$D D$%N channel. Holy smokes, there’s an idea.
If you’re concerned your kids are watching it- be a better parent and don’t let them, it’s called discipline… your kids probably need it regardless.
While we’re at it- let’s sue Playboy for showing naked women- because I guarantee you you’re boy who’s going through puberty has seen a pair of breasts from those pages. Now, he’ll probably go to hell, and why, because you spent more time and energy bitching about the problem instead of solving it.
In closing- tv shows don’t get canceled unless they stop making money. Right now, all you complainers are giving this show the best PR available.
The law is the law and it applies to all filmmakers, from freaks making films in their basements to hipster directors at MTV. You can’t just ignore that fact because it annoys you. Go out and change the law if that’s the case. Insulting people doesn’t really do anything. I’m a liberal and not working for any group opposing this. But I’m a parent and if this law exists, which I’m glad it does, then it has to be enforced equally and evenly to have any power.
Peach, you’re a moron and it scares me that you’ve probably popped out a few kids. Do them a favor and don’t try trapping them in your imaginary 1950s puritanical world so they can at least function in society and not kill themselves by 15.
Nope, no kids. Though I would do them the favor of raising them in a “puritanical world” (sans imaginary) haha. Doesn’t every good parent want a well mannered child? Sheltering can actually be good for people. Especially against …everything this TV show represents.
Upholding values from a by-gone era like the 50s creates boundaries. People need boundaries, if even for appearances only. Wanna go in depth about how people’s revolt against civility and unabashed “accept me as I am!” attitude is ruining society? Let’s dance.
Dancing is forbidden in this Pilgrim home.
LOL!… “upholding values from a by-gone era like the 50s creates boundaries”? yes, and that includes the value where you aren’t entitled to an opinion. now get back in that 1950s kitchen and bake me a pie before i smack you into next week.
LOL!… “upholding values from a by-gone era like the 50s creates boundaries”? yes, and that includes the value where you aren’t entitled to an opinion. now get back in that 1950s kitchen and bake me a pie before i smack you into next week.
I failed to quote the poster “hilarious” above. At any rate, I too agree it is amusing when women refer back to the 1950s as some kind of utopian era. I probably wouldn’t use “hilarious”s exact words, but it drives home the point and hypocrisy.
Whatev, I don’t think you forgot to quote, you dolt, you double posted using a second name. I wonder how many times you posted on this site using different names because you are the sole supporter of this show?
So why don’t you shut your trap and finish baking me that pie and stop threatening abuse on a woman before I show you what a real man can do.
IF you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I don’t complain about the 700 Club, I just change the channel. You can too. Don’t dictate what others should or shouldn’t be allowed to watch. If you don’t want your kids to watch it, cancel cable TV and stick to over the air where it is censored by the FCC.
And… while we’re at it, why don’t we just abolish all the laws that protect minors… and let the pedophiles have their heyday? And wrap a show around them too… promoting free love…
Since when are teens having sex with teens and teens being sexually assaulted by pedophiles one and the same??? What does abolishing laws against pedophiles have to do with a cable tv show no one is forced to watch at gunpoint? Please elaborate and enlighten us with your hack social wisdom.
SP Hudson, I am responding to your question because your rationale is skewed. A TV show featuring minors having sex may be based on reality but it doesn’t mean it should be on television, even if it’s cable. We have anti-child pornography laws for a reason. This show skirts so closely to that boundary and than celebrates it as sexy and fun!
People aren’t in revolt because it’s just a poorly written/executed show, but because it’s wrong.
Did you bother to watch the show? It’s hardly pornography. Really, teens having sex and doing drugs? Oh, that’s never been shown before on TV or in the movies… Nope. Never. All those 1980s teen sex comedies never happened. The American Pie movies were never produced.
And, hey, how exactly did that 90 teen pregnancies at one high school happen recently?
Get real. If anyone has bothered to watch the UK version, the show is outrageous, raunchy, tragic, and thought-provoking.
The kids on Skins actually have to deal with the consequences of their actions. Take drugs? You may end up in the hospital. Have sex? You may get pregnant. Be a jerk? You may lose all of your friends.
So, again, did you bother to watch the first episode of the U.S. version or any of the U.K. version which airs on BBC America?
dude – they’re teenagers, not children…get over it.
my only real issue is the disgusting “toddlers/tiaras” show.
WHY is the PTC not complaining about a show that films and airs mothers forcing screaming, terrified, trembling, traumatized and victimized 5 YEAR OLDS to get their eyebrows waxed, stating, on camera “oh she’s just freaked out because the last time the wax pulled her skin off”
uh hello…she’s five dipshit.
MTV is loving this…
Now I’m definitely gonna tune in.
Peach and Ivy clearly live in some parallel dimension where 1950 never ended and the depiction of teens in America should be dilemmas such as “Should I do the right thing and confess to Mr. Wilson that I broke his window with my baseball?” or “Will Lassie come pull me out of this well in time?”.
I really am disappointed in the morality of this country. What has happened to being a decent human being and contributing positively to our society. I see no benefit in airing this terrible TV show. It does nothing but glamorize these children behaving almost like animals. I thought as a society we were evolving but I see it as dissolving by allowing these kids to behave as they do. They are breaking all kinds of laws and we as the adult just sit there and watch? For what MONEY? How terrible is that.
Please do not allow this show to go forward. We as a society especially children are confused enough.
This TV show is the very reason at one time I did not want to have children. I am not too religious, but GOD SAVE THESE CHILDREN, because no one else is!!!!
Comments like yours, “Peach” kill me. This show is as accurate to real teen life as MTV could possibly make it. No one looks at the overall picture when it comes to the show itself. It’s a good show with compelling characters and portrays high school in a true light. All these GOD SAVE THE CHILDREN comments make me want to pull my hair out. Such close mindedness. This is exactly, exactly why this show would’ve been better off on HBO or AMC.
For the ignorant people on this forum: I don’t know how you prudes live in the US, but in Europe it is not rare for people to have active sexual lives around that age (if I remember properly, France has an age of consent of like 15). Live with it.
This show is amazing and real. Teenagers are doing it in the real world why can’t they show it on t.v. It’s better them watching then doing.
I think this show really is good and if some ppl are disgusted my it then dont watch it. DUH!! Some of the stuff on this show is true and its an amazing tv show so i think it should stay on here
Hate to sound like a PTA mom from 1955 but I agree with them. Watched a few minutes of this. I was disgusted. This crosses all lines of good taste and propriety in my opinion.
Your opinion is about as irrelevant and obsolete as your entire generation.
as irrelevant and obsolete as your entire generation.
There is no such thing. You wish it were so, but no. Accept that.
You do realize you will one day age, right?
That is, of course, you’re not already over 40 pretending to be some cool, edgy teen behind the anonymity of the internet.
Yeah, because insults like that are SO influential in the courtroom and on this important issue of law protecting kids and how it applies to artistic freedom. The defenders of this show are such inarticulate, smug, superior aholes. I’m hardly impressed. The dangers of kids getting involved in child pornography are real. That’s what this law is about. If you don’t think it should apply to some tacky low-brow MTV piece of great art, fine, say that. But insulting parents’ concerns about a real danger facing mostly low-income kids nobody is looking out for, that’s horrible. It’s just shallow and soulless.
Sorry, my post above was addressing SP Hudson.
Your comments prove that YOU are irrelevant.
Saw this in the NY Times yesterday, MTV should be thanking PTC for the free publicity it’s giving Skins. Nothing will come out of the lawsuit and more kids are going to watch.
duh – you hit the nail on the head, and as a person intimately involved in the show both economically and otherwise, I just love all the free poublicity. Thank you PTC – please scream louder so the ratings go up.
These idiots that run organizations like the PTC seem to be completely oblivious to how much free publicity they give the shows and films they denounce. MTV must have seen this coming a mile away and the PTC does the usual braying, right on cue.
I’m no prude, but there needs to be a serious investigation into the actions of the producers on this show. These are children. What have we become as an industry that this is what we’re putting out?
No, you’re a prude. Trust me, you are.
Yeah, Ivy, you’re a total prude. Anyone who starts off any statement by saying, “I’m not…..but…”, inevitably is.
And you must be a pedophile.
Let it be shown. There are reality shows (VH1) and documentaries (morgue shows) that are worse than this. I find it pretty realistic, aside from the dialogue; it’s too advanced for the majority of how teens speak.
The content isn’t the issue. The issue is that there are children in these scenes.
Surely the whole point is that children actually partake in these kind of actions. You seem to be completely out of touch and missing the point.
As someone of the UK, we had nothing like this distain when the original and apparently much more hardcore original series aired. What happened to the legacy of Kids? And that was 15 years ago. Talk about progression
@Anglophile-
And if someone can show that there are ELEMENTARY school children having sex with eachother (which is close at hand if they keep spewing this garbage out into kids’ minds), should they then be allowed to film 8 year olds having sex b/c it’s “reality”?
Please just give me a direct answer w/out name-calling.
15 and 16 year olds are neither “kids” nor “children.” They aren’t adults, but they most definitely aren’t helpless and naive waifs.
Roman Polanski ladies and gentlemen.
They’re what? 16-17 on the show and 17-20 in real life? Definetly not children. And, more important, people do this in real life.
I’m 16 a senior, I have had sex and I drink from time to time, and it is REALLY commom among teenagers my age. Drugs not so much, but it does happen, specially pot.
Under the LAW, anyone under 18 is a minor and protected under existing child pornography and child exploitation statutes.
Uh, you do realize that the young people ACTING on the show are ACTING? They are not having sex or doing drugs?
O.K. One more time, the ACTORS are pretending. It’s all make-believe.
Get a grip.
The show isn’t a celebration of debauchery. It’s a reflection of what happens today. Hell, kids have been having sex and getting pregnant for just about forever. Teen sex and the consequences of it have been explored for decades in film and television.
“The show isn’t a celebration of debauchery. It’s a reflection of what happens today.”
I was with you up until this point. It really kinda was a celebration. Was their any negative repercussions to their behavior?
I don’t know exactly what my problem is with the show. I think it’s part the fact that it’s on MTV, It’s not a comedy, and there are no negative repercussions to their behaviors. This is NOT a show suitable for children, and for every bible thumping moron trying to tell me how to live, their is a short sighted A**hole screaming about freedom of speech and parents ” should watch their kids” or watch what they are watching. Statements clearly written by someone without a job, children, and lifes responsibilities.
I respect art, free speech, and peoples rights to be creative. However their is simple right and wrong, and all the stuff in between. I’d prefer the show be on another channel such as showtime HBO or Starz and not marketed to my children.
Read the LAW, Jake. It doesn’t matter if it is simulated or real- or (attorneys, help me out here- but I believe this is true) even if it is someone OVER 18 who is made to look as if they are under 18.
And the “children” that you are referring to in this show have parents. OBVIOUSLY their parents let them audition and take the role knowing VERY WELL what the script was. SO why don’t you let THEIR PARENTS decide what THEIR CHILD can and can not do.
Uh- do you think there may be parents out there who would, FOR MONEY, let people film their kids doing ANYTHING?????? Should they be allowed to do that just because they happened to give birth to them? Are the kids their “property” to do with as they see fit, or are children entitled to some type of protection?
This is why we have child exploitation laws. Any parent who allows their minor child child to be filmed in a sexual context should be held liable for child endangerment.
Funny how when the UK version, the much more raw and “dangerous” UK version hit the air a few years ago the PTC was nowhere to be found. Now that it’s an MTV show and there is more interest in the show they’re all up in arms.
The PTC attacks shows that they can make the most hay with, it has nothing to do with content. Like Fred Phelps they are all about making the evening news and having stuff to claim on their fundraising letters.
FAIL!
Fred Phelps? Really? Wow, you live in a scary little world.
I’ve seen every ep of the British SKINS and the pilot of the US one. I can’t for the life of me imagine what could be considered pornographic. There’s no nudity, there’s no actors being forced to have sex with one another, there’s IMPLIED drug use and sex, but that certainly doesn’t violate any laws.
I didn’t love the show, but to call it pornographic in a day and age when kids see worse things than this every day – on TV, on the Internet, in real life – is just sad. No one ever gets worked up about teen violence on TV, just teen sex. Shame on the PTC.
God if you think Skins is bad, you should see the UK Channel 4 series called “The Joy of Teen Sex.” It goes through everything from vaginal waxing to getting a piercing through the head of a penis…. everything. Nothing is off limits.
Um, I think you mean “pubic waxing.” Vagina waxing sounds more like some kind of torture method, or disgusting religious/cultural tradition from African/Middle Eastern countries.
Yup- and that’s what we’ll be seeing on tv here, too, if we don’t stand up. What do you think will be next after even THAT stops getting (pardon the expression) a rise out of people?
I find it so sad that “nothing is off limits”. They are de-sensitizing us to the point that nothing is special or holy or beautiful anymore.
That’s why God made remote controls. Change the channel! Install a V-chip! Unless the cast members themselves are complaining about being exploited (and it doesn’t look like they are), then seems like the only people complaining are people who would never watch the show to begin with.
I don’t watch this show, or MTV for that matter, but MTV should have realized this show obviously wasn’t going to work in the United States, where things are less free and more puritanical in the media than in Britain. Nope, none of these fascist groups were calling for the producers’ heads when it aired in the U.K.
Dear PTC,
Teenagers, especially ones between the ages of 16-18 have sex. Deal with it. Child pornography? I’m not seeing any blatant nudity or private parts, or explicit sex scenes involving pre-pubescent children (the definition of child pornography), and you’re argument therefore holds absolutely no water.
Sincerely,
Reality
I had heard the poor reviews as to its quality, but I’m so going to be watching this now.
Same here!
I agree with the earlier comment, the BBC show is much worse. But anytime the US tries to do any thing racy it seen as abhorent. Like tv in the US has to sanctified and sterile, unlike the rest of the world. Where nudity is openly inbraced. Did I watch it? No not my cup of tea. But we have the right to see if we want. Making it taboo will only drive the ratings up.
Like Robin Williams once joked (during l’affaire d’Lewinsky back in ’98: “Remember, America was founded by the pilgrims. People who were too tight-assed for Victorian England“
Except the pilgrims came a couple hundred years before Victoria
Well for the show to go from solid ratings to an over the top hit, this is exactly what the show needed to happen. 3 words, Married With Children.
The more people criticize skins and try to take off, the more teenagers are going to want to watch it.
PTC=More ratings
And when the Obama Justice Dept decides that this isn’t worth jack shit, the conservatives will come back with “Obama doesn’t care about family values!! ” And then, enter that jerkwad O’Reilly.
I’m sitting here in total awe… if anything there’s not enough sex… fucking ass America bleeped out all the swear words. This show is such a pussy version and will NEVER live up to the UK’S version. I want this to get canceled so fucking bad it hurts.
As a father of young children, I hate everything that this show is about. I see no reason to depict young people this way, and I say that only because it’s glib. It’s not real. It’s polished and you can feel the adult writing in the voices of these young characters. But I absolutely defend it’s right to be on the air. The audience will tell MTV whether or not it’s good. Whether that’s because parents control the remote or the reality of the show starts becoming unreal and therefore young people walk away. But the real question is corporate. First with Viacom. They have the right to say that’s not for our network(s) and the show dies. Second with advertising. Advertisers have the right to say no that’s not something we choose to spend ad dollars on. In both cases, it comes down to individual responisibility and having to answer to shareholders and or board members. Personal responsibility in our society is what’s broken. Knowing what’s right or wrong as opposed to being led to what’s right or wrong is where we’ve failed young people.
DOesn’t the PTC realise it’s only giving the shows they criticise free publicity, and helping them become hits.
For every Taco Bell that pulls its adds, there are fore more companies wanting to show their brand in a show with a big teen audience.
That being said, I am a HUGE fan of SKins UK and didn’t like the US remake, but’ll keep on watching. It has nothing pornographic by any means. It has implied sex, but what’s the big news? Most teenagers have actual sex in real life.
And besides, from what I could tell, apart from Tony’s sister, who doesn’t have a sex scene or anything, only 2 cast members are underage, and they’re seventeen, hardly kids.
No offense, but Skins is like a watered down version of “Kids” from 15 years ago. It’s also a weaker version of the BBC original, and not really worth getting worked up over. Leave it alone, and it’ll be cancelled after one season like the rest of MTV’s garbage original series.
This is dumb. And it’s not a good show, but it’s not pornography in the slightest. There are issues with the show, but high school kids do drugs and have sex. It happens. That’s the (overdone) reality that Skins attempts to show.
I’m from the Committee Against Horrible Acting (CAHA), and I demand this show be pulled off the air for the indecent thespian incompetence of basically the entire ensemble. For shame!
So true! The acting is horrible along with the lazy writing. That’s why the show should be canceled. Some posters have it right. Anything remotely ‘pornographic’ (via american standards) is implied and/or verbal. The show is dreck but not pornography. At least not yet on the latter.
The PTC are the socially-retarded homeschoolers who got their granny panties in a bunch over Gossip Girl and wound up making it a huge hit. So, more power to them – you prudes are free press AND ratings gold! Gripe away!
I would like to see an investigation in to the PTC itself. For years, this self-righteous tool of the religious right has claimed to be an advocacy group for American parents in general. It’s not. The PTC consists of Brent Bozell and a few interns watching TV and issuing press releases that reflect their religious and political values. The PTC has claimed to represent millions of parents, when, in reality, their “membership” pledge drives cap out at about 12,000 people. To me, that’s like a local public radio station suddenly deciding they deserve to dictate the social mores for the entire country based on their pledge drive membership numbers.

Oh wow. So much commotion over a television program. As soon as my friends were allowed to watch the British series we grew up with the characters from both original seasons. I turned out fine and so did all my friends. America, if you’re so worried about the show being too taboo you should’ve just imported the British version. It’s not child porn it is modern teenagers growing up with the challenges they face in modern society such as drugs and sex.
HOW DARE YOU!?!?!? The only “challenges” teens in America should be facing are “Should I do the right thing and confess to Mr. Wilson that I broke his window with my baseball?” or “Will Lassie come pull me out of this well in time?”. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!
Haha!
Aces.
Obviously you’ve been living under a rock. Statistics show that by the age of 14 kids have already tried smoking pot and drinking alcohol. Whether you like it or not they’re doing it. It’s overprotectiveness like this that drives them to do it. Kids are going to be kids. You act like when you were a kid you didn’t do stupid stuff. You really need to crawl out from under your little 1932 rock you’ve been living under and realize you’re in the 21st century and things have CHANGED.
Why doesn’t my comment appear, but when I try to post it again it says I’ve already said that?
