What a depressing way to start 2011. Actor Pete Postlethwaite has passed away at age 64, losing a long fight with cancer. The British actor had his Hollywood breakout with an Oscar-nominated turn as Guiseppe Conlon, the working class Irish father who shared a prison cell with son Gerry in 1993′s In The Name of the Father. He played good guys and bad guys in equal measure and turned in memorable performances in The Usual Suspects, Romeo + Juliet, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and two current Oscar contenders: The Chris Nolan-directed Inception and the Ben Affleck-directed The Town. The latter performance, as the florist/vicious Boston gangster Fergie, was a showcase for his considerable talent. He’s survived by wife Jacqui and his son, Will, and daughter, Lily.

R.I.P. Pete. Very good actor and always a delight every time he was on screen.
This hurts. What a talent. Maybe the BBC will rerelease or put on DVD one of his best performances, the recent TV mini-series “The Sins.” As a mobster gone straight, Postelhwaite makes you laugh, then breaks your heart.
Devastating. I’ve just seen him in an old BBC Show: Dickens’ ‘Martin Chuzzlewit’ and in ‘Inception’.
But he was the best in ‘The Town’ as the frightening Irish mob boss.
Incredible loss.
RIP PETE.
How very sad. Pete elevated every project he appeared in. I particularly love his performance in Brassed Off. Thoughts and love to his family.
Guiseppe Conlon is dead! too sad! RIP
What a sad loss for his wife, child and the entertainment industry. This guy was an incredible and rare talent and died at the top of his game. I never met him but can’t stop thinking his death left a gaping hole in the talent pool.
Depressing news, indeed. The loss of a truly gifted actor.
R.I.P he was a great actor!
RIP and condolences to family and friends.
Recently saw him as “the florist” in Town and enjoyed his work in The Usual Suspects and his brief role in Inception. Did not know he was ill. A sad loss.
Damn. We lost one of the great ones this time. Two thumbs up to you, Mr. Postlethwaite. Thank you for all the talent shared that we might dream better dreams.

Who can forget his touching performance in Brassed Off?
His performance in the Town was riveting, and along with Renner, the best peformances in a movie with a lot of good ones. Also loved him in Constant Gardener, Usual Suspects, even in that crazy role in Aeon Flux where he was almost dressed to look like a condom — he had a knack for taking two minutes of screen time and making them the most memorable ones of the movie. Nice in looking at his credits that he had such a busy year this year, what with Inception, Clash of the Titans, and the Town — makes me wonder if Pete Posthelwaite was actually the movie actor with the highest grosses this year in his films! Take that, Leonardo!
This is so depressing. He was an incredible actor. We were just about to make an offer to him too.
Wow, he was fantastic in The Town. RIP.
I JUST watched the Town on New Year’s Day, and Pete stole the movie. What a talent.
This dude could straight up ACT. Thank you for all your terrific work. RIP.
RIP Pete.
One of the most special talents we ever had. I loved watching this actor perform and will miss him greatly.
Peter Postlethwaite was a fantastic character actor, an understated but powerful scene stealer. He died far too young and had too many great roles ahead of him. My condolences to his family and friends. Tremendous talent, this guy. RIP.

RIP. Fantastic talent.
It would totally not surprise me if he snuck into the Best Supporting Actor race for The Town. Would be well deserved.
Such sad news.
he was a rare and unique talent
Will miss his incredible and special performances.
Condolences to his family and friends
RIP Pete!
R.I.P Pete Postlethwaite was a great actor
His performance in and passion for the documentary “The Age of Stupid” are also tremendous. The world has lost a great actor and a great man.
I didnt know who he was when I first read article on Yahoo today. Then I saw the picture and it struck the memory cord. He was really dry actor but thats what that movie “Usual Suspects” needed.
Mr. Postlethwaite had such a unique presence on film. I can still remember his haunting performance in The Usual Suspects. He is sorely missed.
