The London-based actress has passed away after losing a fight with cancer. She was 72. Susannah York had her Hollywood breakout with an Oscar-nominated performance in the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and won a BAFTA for the same role. She first became popular with the public co-starring in the quadruple-Oscar-winning Tom Jones (1963) before appearing in A Man For All Seasons (1966) and playing Beryl Reid’s gay lover in The Killing of Sister George (1968). Her place in film history is assured through those groundbreaking films. The 70s weren’t so good for York – the highpoint of which was playing Superman’s mother Lara in Superman (1978). I only spoke to her last month when she told me how excited she was to be flying to Princeton University to be interviewed after a screening of John Huston’s Freud (1962) in which she starred opposite Montgomery Clift.

RIP Susannah York a real great talent (thank you) and will be truly missed.
A wonderful woman as well as a great actress. Rest in peace.
Ah, she was so classy. Always liked her work. R.I.P.
In “A Christmas Carol” she was the best, playing ‘Mrs. Crachit’ against David Warner’s ‘Bob Crachit’ and George C. Scott’s ‘Scrooge’. I know Dickens was very proud.
A great beauty and great talent.
Your presence will be missed. Your films will be cherished.
Loved her work and her looks.
I always thought she had one of the loveliest speaking voices of her generation of actresses. She was sadly under used in the last 20 years.
Wow … Truly a classy woman… And a talent we will know for a long time!
One of my crushes as a teenager. I heard it or read it somewhere that doing, ‘Sister George’ killed her career. Sad if true. R.I.P. lovely lady.
Who cares about a lean period? She played Superman’s mom in the Superman movie that has yet to be beat.
Parenthetically, why the hell isn’t the Huston/Clift Freud collaboration on Criterion yet? Or any dvd? Youtube isn’t good enough.
She was a total babe! We’ll all miss her to be sure, and only wish
she’d appeared in more films. I especially liked her in “Battle of
Britain”, dressed up in her WREN uniform. Wow!
So sad, and why isn’t ‘The Greengage Summer’ (aka ‘The Loss of Innocence’) out on DVD? Such a lovely actress in a lovely film from a truly great book. RIP.
I loved her work.
It took me ’til “Superman” to have a clue about who this chick was.
