Last night, Fox’s Fringe (1.9/6 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers) matched its Friday premiere last week in the demo, while its teammate, Kitchen Nightmares (1.7/6, 4 million) was down 11% from its season debut last week. The hold for Fringe is encouraging while the drop for Kitchen Nightmares was surprising as the show faced all-rerun competition this week vs. the series finale of Medium and a first-run Supernanny last Friday. Fringe was once again the top program among adults 18-49, with Fox (1.6/5, 4.3 million) repeating as No.1 in 18-49 on a night where the only other original offerings were newsmagazines: ABC’s What Would You Do? (1.3/4, down 24%) and 20/20 (1.7/5, up 13%) and NBC’s two-hour Dateline (1.7/6, up 21%). CBS (1.2/4, 7.7 million) was tops in viewers with crime drama reruns. The test for Fringe comes next week when it will face original CSI: NY and Supernatural. (The CW pushed the return of Smallville and Supernatural to next week.)

think about it its in the xfiles old time slot
Yeah, but more recently, it’s been a graveyard for Fox’ sci-fi series.
I recall the X-Files having the Sunday 9pm slot. Was it on Friday prior to that?
Yes. The X-Files started off on Friday night and then was later moved to Sunday.
Even though the ratings are steady and it rates high in it’s demos, is Fox really going to renew a sci-fi series that’s only bringing in about 4.7 million viewers?
I don’t know Fringe’s budget, but Fox has Terra Nova and is looking at Locke and Key for next season.Do they really want to spend money on a low rated series that can’t support it’s budget, along with those two shows?
Locke&Key has absolutely ZERO buzz. Deadline ran three, four casting news and there was zero response. Geek sites aren`t interested to pick up the news.Nobody seems to care and yet this sound like a big budget, SFX-ladden extravaganza. But it has NO stars at all. At least Fringe had Joshua Jackson until fans descovered the greatness of Noble and Torv. But L&K absolutely nobody. Oh, well. As long as Fox doesn`t dump Fringe in favor of that crap I don`t care.
You bet, Steve! Plus the fact that there’s so little quality anything on TV any more! We can only hope TPTB wake up and see this, and realize there’s a significant audience wanting not only an XFILES 3 MOVIE but a reboot of the XFILES franchise!
Xfiles reboot without Mulder and Scully? No fucking way.
Yay for FRINGE. Best un-lauded show on TV.
No, I’d give that award to Treme.
Fringe gets the Razzy.
GOOD!!!
One of the last truly exciting, intelligent, creative shows on television right now.
Hope it keeps going.
Well, Mark, that’s not really true considering Fox is about to premiere Chicago Code which is from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan. Also, a lot of the drama pilots ABC and NBC are now greenlighting seem very intelligent thanks to Paul Lee and Bob Greenblatt. Expect risky programming like ABC’s Poe, Pan Am, NBC’s Ste
NBC’s Stephan Gaghan pilot.
Let’s see how it fairs once Supernatural and CSI:NY return next week.
Fringe has evolved into an awesome show, so I really hope it holds on.
Supernatural was supposed to resume new episodes last night, but for no apparent reason the CW elected to run an episode of Nikita. I like Supernatural, too, so I hope it and Fringe don’t cannibalize each other’s viewers.
This is kind of off the point maybe but maybe bot since it’s about Friday night. Can somebody tell me what’s been going on in the plot my favorite show Bluebloods? I missed several episodes when I fell asleep in my chair while I was watching a couple weeks ago and then I woke up last night and it seemed like the same thing on the screen and I got confused. But I realized it was a couple weeks later (call me Rip Van Winkle!). I love this program with Tom Selig and I don’t have a Teabeau to go back and see things I missed.
Can producers of canceled shows please stop blaming the “Friday Death Slot” now?
It’s all about demos. Nerds have no where to be on Friday night.
They need to recast the leads if they ever want this thing to be a hit. The dorky guy from “Dawson’s Creek” is especially wooden.
Actually him I like – and John Noble. They need to cut out about half the Anna Torv stuff for me and make it more the Walter and Peter show. They’re the compelling characters. Beef up Broyles, Astrid and Nina Sharp but cut way back on Olivia on her own thanks.
The Olivia character is written and played a bit too over the top for my tastes. She comes across as a skinny, blonde Steven Seagal character from the 80s – only in drag.
I try to watch it live if I can (it comes on at 7pm in Mountain time). But when I watch it online or on DVD I FF through about 90% of her stuff when she’s not with the father & son.
I agree I mean 5 million viewers is not a lot but it does have a lot of DVD usage
Fringe sort of sits there being terrific in spite of everything – in spite of poor ratings, in spite of being passed over for any kind of awards and is fairly easily the most compelling sci fi slanted offering on tv in the past 10 years – and yes I’m including Lost and the like in that. Creatively it’s a triumph and absolutely deserves to continue. I hope that it will.
The Ginger Olivia was hotter.
fringe seems to be following the path of the xfiles by being on friday and so far the so called death slot has not claimed fringe yet. if nothing else fox should really look at teaming fringe with terra nova or lock and key. but fringe big test on trying to break the friday death slot is to come to try and hold its own against small ville and super natural long over due return.
What’s really odd is the pairing with a cooking show. What the hell does one have to do with the other?
Are they thinking “Chicks like Joshua Jackson and John Noble and Lance Reddick – and chicks like cooking right? Perfect!”
It struck me as a really strange pairing.
Does Fox have any other cartoons it could run here??
I love this show, the writing is top notch, story lines are original and exciting, and as a bonus it looks absolutely amazing in HD…some shows end up looking like daytime soap-operas when you see them in HD but as a DISH customer/employee I’m pleased to say Fringe looks absolutely EPIC. I just hope this show doesn’t go the way of so many great shows that Fox has dumped…namely FireFly and Arrested Development.
