Regis Philbin is retiring from Live with Regis and Kelly. He made the announcement this morning on the daily syndicated talk show, which he has been hosting for almost 25 years. Live will continue after his departure, slated for late summer or fall, with Kelly Ripa getting a new co-host. Philbin, who is 79, has been in television for a half a century, with his numerous gigs including hosting the American version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Live originated as The Morning Show on WABC-TV with him and Cindy Garvey as co-hosts. Kathie Lee Gifford became his co-host in 1985, and in 1988, Buena Vista Television launched the syndicated Live with Regis & Kathie Lee. Gifford departed the show in 2000, with Ripa joining the show in 2001. In the past few years, Philbin underwent a heart bypass and hip replacement surgeries. Philbin holds the world record for most hours spent in front of a TV camera with well over 16,000 hours on the air.

It was odd when he made the announcement at the top of the show (saying ‘certain old people had to move on’) … and, then came back at the end to say he wasn’t retiring … just, moving on.
I hope he wasn’t pished … though, could you really blame ABC?
Sad … a legend. Met him back in the JOEY BISHOP days through my family.
Terrific broadcaster … a legend, we wish you well!
How long until we hear that Ryan Seacrest wants the job?
Oh God no.
Oh God, God no.
Seacrest wants so badly to be the next Dick Clark-esque cultural icon and I admire his work ethic, but that’s about it. I don’t admire how unabashedly he tries to force himself into the good ol’ boys club. Watching him kiss the greats’ asses in interviews etc. is just uncomfortable. Nobody can replace The Regis.
How bout Gunner Wright and Kelly. Just a thought.
I hope Regis reconsiders. Daytime TV will not be the same without him. A class act, if ever there was one. I certainly place Regis in the same esteemed group as Betty White and other groundbreakers. They paved the way for the medium, and are still stars a half-century later.
If Seacrest is even considered, I will puke.
I wonder is this where Prost jumps off Suvivor?
This laid back, daytime format lends itself to working into your 70s. You know what does not lend itself to working into old age? Hosting a nighttime talk show. The energy of Leno and Letterman, combined with the hopelessly dated references of the former, is just off-putting. Can someone please convince these guys to step down sometime? I used to be a fan of Letterman and enjoyed Leno once a week or so, but they’re just humiliating themselves now. Neither guy even looks physically healthy. Especially Jay. The show is so dated and unfunny and he looks so out of it it’s just embarrassing for NBC.

Know what? That’s a really insightful comment. And spot on.
I’ve watched Regis for the entire time he has been in syndication. Even when I detested Kathie Lee, I watched for Regis. Over the years I’ve scheduled everything from law school classes, to meetings, to meals around having the show on in the background. Regis has always been a comfortable, soothing presence. His age (and his ability to recount personal anecdotes about the glory days of Hollywood) remain thoroughly enjoyable. I also fondly recall the days that I’d see him with his then-young daughters strolling on Park Avenue. He was always kind and friendly to any stranger who greeted him.
But you’re right. While I have similar fond memories of early Letterman, I find the current-day incarnation tedious and unbearable to watch. Letterman now seems old and crotchety in late-night, while early-morning Reege seems as entertaining as ever. You’ve hit the talk-show-age-continuum nail squarely on the head. Good Job!
Agreed. Spot on.
I remember watching AM LA with Regis and Sarah Purcell before it was Live. Cyndi took over for Sarah. God I’m old.
Regis is a legend and will be missed. He’s like a fine wine that grows on you. He’s certainly earned the opportunity to sleep in and enjoy his life. Kell has had so many guest hosts that it will be interesting to see where they go with it. I’m sure NPH wouldn’t be up for such a big commitment, but he’s been a fun guest host. Let the guessing games begin.
I absolutely love that the man has not even retired yet and the only thing people can talk about is “who is going to replace Regis.” It is like circling vultures.
Hopefully, he pulls a Brett Favre and mixes it up.
TIme to bring back Stanley Siegel!
Wow, this really sucks. I know he said he’s not retiring but it still feels like the end of an era. When I was a little kid I used to be obsessed with watching Live every morning during the summer. When I first moved to L.A. I’d have the show on in the background while getting ready in the morning. He’s always embodied those idealistic and wide-eyed “Old Hollywood” days. Great entertainer.
Does this mean that Michael Gelman will now have to get a real job? What will he do if the cute young things in Bridgehampton fail to recognize the biggest star to grace Suffolk County since Eddie Burns?
I have yet to see anyone filling in who comes close to being a great replacement. Regis is not only funny, a superb storyteller and quick, he’s genuinely humble. Good luck finding another host like that in this me-culture. And I swear if Seacrest or Jeff Probst are even considered for the job I will never watch this show again. Needless to say they’re utter idiots.
Well you know Probst is being considered. He and A. Cooper have been auditioning for years now, though I’m sure Ripa is also lobbying for her husband Mark to get the gig (which would ensure the demise of the show). Boy, I miss Reege already. What a class act.
Oh please…let’s be pals! Not only do I agree with your comment I dig the brutal honesty as evidenced by your chosen name. Har!
But seriously, yes, of course they’ve been auditioning. Probst in particular cannot control his salivating when he’s on. It’s beyond grotesque, ain’t it? Cooper would have been oh-kay, but they need someone with years in the business not just a snark-ass. The idea of more Seacrest in my orbit is migraine inducing. I miss the Reege already too. Boo!
as much as day time will not be the same now once Regis is gone. Regis knows all good things must end . for after 28 years doing the thing Regis deserves a long over due break. as for who should replace him. Jeff Probst and Kelly have interesting chemistry when he has filled in for REgis. as long as its not Ryan Seacrest.
They should get Martin Short to revive his Jimminy Glick character as a replacement.
Another old-school great stepping aside. I love Regis because he can reach back to the old Rat Pack/Joey Bishop days. Leaving at the top of his game at 79 years old. A class act, never to be replaced.
How about Bobby Rivers? Remember him, smart funny fellow, decades younger than Regis and super knowledgeable with regard to Hollywood.
Regis is a class act and has made Kelly step up her game. However the thought of LIVE with Kelly and ____ really does not work. Kelly is a great second banana and a bad top one. Whoever they get to replace Regis doesn’t matter a lot because the show is destined to fail. Let’s hope Kelly and her talent free husband Mark have saved their millions and invested wisely because it’s over for them.
She often says she doesn’t have a “real” job and only works an hour a day. We know that’s a joke but they really do run a lose ship at LIVE. Kelly could not survive on a real TV working show.
So when you say goodbye to Regis say goodbye to Kelly as well. In 5 years she’ll be little more than a pop culture memory.
If the producers are smart they will do everything they can to sign Martin Shoort to replace Regis. Short can restore the humor to the show that Regis outlived and Kelly has destroyed
