The CW Friday sci-fi dramas Smallville and Supernatural won’t return from a winter hiatus tomorrow night as scheduled. In a last-minute move, the network is delaying the shows’ midseason premiere to next Friday to give tonight’s winter debuts of The Vampire Diaries and Nikita extra sampling with encores on Friday as they will face Fox’s American Idol for the first time. Additionally, there are CW preemptions in several markets tonight.

What a joke. I’m sick of all these TV shows taking weeks off at a time mid-season. This is even worse.
I agree with Scott!!! Especially this been the last season for Smallville. This is very disappointing.
Bait and Switch.
Advertise for weeks that two of their better rated shows are coming back. Then, pull them after it is too late to change the TV listings. Viewers tune in as usual. DVRs start recording the shows as usual. Everybody finds out they were duped. CW claims the surprisingly high repeat rating and DVR numbers are a testament to how VampD and Nikita are flourishing, and makes no mention of the heavy drop off numbers, when people figure out that their show is not coming on.
I agree, had been waiting for weeks for the season to restart. Turn the TV on and what are they doing rerunning the shows I watched on Thursday night. VERY poor decisions that CW made. Not everyone watches American idol, not everyone cares about that show. Those of us who have watched Smallville and supernatural since the first air date, were not happy at all. And now I am finding out that they put out some so-called announcement on Thursday. I did not see any announcement. They should have aired the announcements on the channel on Thursday evening during the Vampire Dairies and Nikita shows. It is already saddening that this is Smallville’s last season.
I’m not happy about the switch, but I genuinely believe that it is being done to protect Vampire Diaries from the Idol factor. Viewers are getting one last chance to resume watching new episodes after a long hiatus, instead of missing TVD and deciding not to continue with it.
If the ratings reflect a huge drop off tonight after 8:15pm, The CW won’t be able to hide that.
As to the hiatus length: yeah, it sucks, but with 52 weeks a year and a 22-week tv season, you are going to get 30 weeks of repeats. Where should the network schedule those?
They should have thought about Idol a long time ago. It was stated in the fall that Idol was being moved to Wednesdays and Thursdays in order to keep Glee on the usual night. “Protecting” Vampire Diaries from a show that is an obvious powerhouse every year should have taken effect months ago not the day of the winter premiere. What it does is say something about the integrity of the company that they would advertise for over a month for two shows and then SUDDENLY and WITHOUT WARNING remember that “oh yeah American Idol is on tonight, damn we need them to watch our vampire show and the remake of another old show because” Neither show needs protection for the Idol powerhouse. If the show is good then it will be DVR’d, watched online, or people will watch it and ignore Idol simple as that.
Not a good PR move, that’s for sure. But without Chicago and Baltimore figured into the overnights, chances are the shows would’ve been unjustly bashed Friday anyway. Kind of a lose-lose situation.
People need to get a life. Who cares? My DVR is set. This week, next week, the week after, airing at 8:00 or 2:00 … does it matter?
I hate that Supernatural won’t be on tonight. I think what irks me more than CW’s lame excuse is the fact that I feel as though I was LIED to…and that just pushes my buttons. That and comments on sites that say to grow up and that fans are overeacting. Imagine telling fans of the Packers and Bears 24 hours before the big game that there has been a schedule change because the Jets needed to broaden their fan base. I don’t think it would go over too well. Oh well. It is what it is.
Very well put example. I, for one, am pissed.
I don’t watch Vampire Diaries… I don’t care about Vampire Diaries… I tuned in to see Smallville… Should I wait for the DVD?
You bumb Supernatural, best rated show by “how many Americans”; for VD and Nikita?????????????????? Honestly, what in the heck are you thinking? Well I guess I won’t be watching the CW tonight, or maybe never again if you don’ put the “boys” back on AND WHEN YOU PROMISE TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot for pissing off 32 people under my roof tonight for my mid-season premier party for Smallville (in it’s final season) and Supernatural. BRAVO! I watched Vampire Diaries last night. 2 nights a row? WOW!
I am ticked off that Nikita show is awful and for the Vampire Diaries never got into watching and don’t care to.
I am already ticked that Marvel won’t let Smallville move forward with Superman’s charter,,,, making it the last season very disappointed!!
Now waiting sit down to watch my dvr and find this crap instead of my two favorite shows really ruined my night.
One more thing if you look at all the channels coming up with series that are based on the same premise like, The Cape (which was not good) No Ordinary family (don’t care to watch) Fringe (awesome)The Gates(watchable). The CW would see they have two great shows that other channels are trying to copy. they could have taken on Fridays competition if they invested more into them.
Someone needs to tell American Idol its time to call it quits,,, it has run its course. Maybe come out ever 3 to 5 years. It needs to be done!!! Just wanted to vent. I really hope the line up is back to normal next Friday PLEASE
Maybe the CW could pick up HEROS another great show that just went.
Ok I am done I feel better:))
I was upset to find Vampire Diaries and Nakita on my DVR instead of Smallville and Supernatural. I thought I had missed them! Glad to know it wasn’t a DVR glitch.
Lame! The whole Nikita thing ran it’s course almost 20 years ago! I was having a bad day and really needed my new Supernatural. CW was trying to protect a couple of teeny-bopper dramas from American Idol? Let me throw their own earlier ad tagline back at them and ask “What are You afraid of?” You’ve taken enough chances with my show. It ain’t broke so don’t fix it!
