Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais’ one-hour absence from the stage last night spawned all sorts of conspiracy theories ranging from him being reprimanded by higher-ups at the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. for some of his meaner jabs to him being outright fired. In a statement, Gervais explains what kept him backstage for so long – the pattern of presenters he had chosen beforehand to introduce. And despite the groans from celebrities and HRTS that he may have gone too far with some of his cringe-inducing zingers, Gervais believes that “everyone took it well.” Here is is full statement:
I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humour.) Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great.”

Gervais was great!
A breath of fresh air from all the contrived-safe comedy that has poisoned our airwaves.
Agreed. Everyone deserves to get roasted at least once.
Hey that’s not a bad idea, turn the awards show into a roast. Then instead of yet another event for celebs to suck each other off, it’s entertainment for the rest of us peons.
SO GREAT AN IDEA that I can’t wait until Gervais “hosts” the BAFTAs!!!!!
It had been a while since I had just a good time watching an award show. Comedy and satire is just that, not personal. Great job Ricky.
Gervais was mean spirited very hurtful to a lot of people last night. Feel bad for him. Very bad karma to spread that kind of hate.
Or maybe HE was Karma getting back at people who had it coming to them. YING AND YANG HAS TWO SIDES, AMIRITE?!?!?!
Nah, just an ugly unfunny and extremely overrated hack, who’s pissed his Hollywood career went nowhere fast. It’ll be at a standstill after this.
Sorry, but it’ll do the exact opposite. He’s hugely popular, and this event just cemented it. He had guts, and wits, and even though many jokes fell flat to the mostly American audience most people took it in stride. DeNiro and Christ Noth as older prime examples, were amused. Younger generations (I include myself in that as I’m under 25) need to be able to mock and laugh at themselves. Not get too offended by remarks made by others and be able to laugh it off. Gervais was hired to entertain and keep interests, he’s a comedian and if satirists can mock politicians what’s wrong with aiming a few barbs at some celebrities they both are influential and sure more people like actors but really, we need to be able to laugh. Politically correct jokes and toilet humour are among the humour that is being tried to be flushed away so we don’t have many options in humour left to us, the things Gervais did just helps to keep comedy variation open for everyone.
Because the endless sucking up to them is more palatable?
F those thin skinned millionaires who can’t take a joke. I’m the guy who’s paying a monthly rent and want people like Ricky to tell me I’m ok. So, taste or not…he did his job and I appreciate it ! I will still buy movie tickets and watch television when I can afford to. I appreciate his working class perspective ! – Ohio
hmmm, don’t think you really know Ricky Gervais…
I’m the guy who’s paying a monthly rent and want people like Ricky to tell me I’m ok.
Uh, you need Ricky Gervais, a man who neither knows you nor cares about your existence, to tell you you’re okay? Really? Ricky is off counting the same multi-millions that everyone else in last night’s room is counting, so you might want to look into getting some help for your strange affliction.
Ricky counts his millions, but isn’t the same as these socialist hacks who rake in millions per piture/episode, but are happy to get us peons to vote for people who tell us Wall Street bonuses are obscene. Getting paid for Gigli and complaining about CEO’s pay is in hypocritical, not Ricky Gervais.
So now you hate millionaires based on whether or not you like their particular film, not on the industry in general? But Ricky’s millions are somehow less green because … what? Everyone else is raking in filthy lucre “per episode,” and Gervais is pulling in EVEN MORE MILLIONS based on syndication rights to the Office on two continents. Yet you act as if he were in the kitchen washing dishes with the “working man” just prior to going onstage. He wasn’t. He was at that spa that won’t let YOU enter its portals. So you sound like an idiot, or worse, a hypocrite.
there’s a reason he’s known as “The Great Gervais”
Ricky is the new Sarah Palin.
except, you know. He’s SMART.
Well, he makes jokes. And she is a joke. So I can seem some crossover.
…you know the contradictions in this thread are ludicrous. all because Ricky “stepped” on some leather & glitter clad left-wing hollywood “royal” blue-stained toes.
first one asshole says Gervais wont get work then another says he is off counting his millions. ????
which is it folks?
either the guy is a fool or he is the latest in a long line of “royal jesters,” showing hollywood “royalty” for the “royal” fools they really are.
bahhh hollywood is full of fools. just because they have talented in limited qualities doesnt make any of them above reproach or roasting. these are gods folks. these are ants called “actors.” no different then u or me.
PS btw, since someone mentioned her AGAIN…if Palin is such a joke how come liberals are so scared of her? I mean with all the smart people controlling the media what harm can she do? seriously..it seems like anyone who pisses of the leftwingers in hollywood is all of sudden “mean” and “stupid”…
….Im f*king getting pissed off that the hollywood crowd is so “thin-skinned” yet they sure as hell can screw it to Palin and any conservative pro-lif pro-USA politician and/or citizen who also decides to become popular and/or successful.
f**k the left wing.
Perhaps you see contradictions because there are different people posting with different perspectives. Why do you assume it’s the same people? And if you hate hollywood so much and are so bent out of shape about reading the comments here, here’s a suggestion: don’t come over and read/post on Deadline *Hollywood* Daily. I promise you won’t be missed.
A reality TV star and frequent Facebook updater?
The recession is killling America: watching millionaires get a roasting was great timing. The vast majority of reactions to Gervais have been positive.
This is one venue where that kind of vitriol is perfectly acceptable. Everyone in Hollywood knows what a crock of shit the HFPA is and EVERYONE plays along with it because it ultimately generates attention and money. Everyone at the Hilton last night was fair game (and so are train wrecks like Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen). Gervais can stop skewering people at the Golden Globes when the HFPA cleans up its act. (So I wouldn’t expect him to stop skewering people any time soon).
Rickys films have all been bombs so last night was his way of “connecting with his audience”.
His movies have failed here for the same reason people are up in arms over his Awards hosting role – British humour is rarely understood or appreciated by Americans. Simple as that. It won’t change and it doesn’t have to. British people laugh at Americans more often than not. He just got up and did what he was used to – made fun of a country the whole world often mocks – just this time – he did it to their faces.

yeah cause ‘Alias’, ’24′, ‘Stardust’ and ‘Night at the Museum 1 & 2′ to name a few are just veddy veddy British humor..
As a fellow Brit, I find his as funny as paint drying – he tries too hard and when people don’t laugh at his jokes – he attacks, he’s mean and vicious.
British humor is “rarely understood or appreciated” by Americans? Really? Then someone better explain why the “Carry On” gang’s uniquely Brit Wit was watched and enjoyed here in the states as early as the 1960s. And while you’re at it, why not dig up Peter Sellers, Benny Hill and the other British comics who had long and incredibly successcul careers here. Honestly, why do people spout nonsense as if it were fact?
Gervais is both liked and disliked, depending solely upon whether an audience member enjoys his particular brand of humor. It has nothing to do with anyone “understanding” it. He isn’t reciting quantum theories of physics. He is telling jokes, some of which are meanspirited personal attacks. Some people like that sort of thing. Others don’t. And he didnt “make fun of a country.” He made fun of a handful of members of ONE industry. You appear not to understand that Hollywood and America are separate entities.
Really? Your argument is based on tv stars from more than 4 decades ago? Benny Hill? Peter Sellers? Carry On? What is this – 1976? haha.
Yes, my comment is based on a HISTORY of British humor being accepted and “understood” here in the US. To prove that HISTORY I’ve given examples over decades, hon. That’s what HISTORY means, something that has existed over time, and not just for the 15 minutes that you’ve been awake and twiddling your thumbs. Not getting too complicated for you to keep up, are we?
….hateful..mean spirited?…good God when did we loose our sence of humor? If pointing out a 60 something woman has a face tighter than a 19yo, cut to star of your choice, isn’t pointing a mirror at some of us good, clean, poking fun ? It seems the 40′s somethings take it the worst and those so full of themselves. DeNiro was having a ball as were more of the “older” stars. The rehab and need rehab folks are not off limits. Did he make fun of anyone fighting cacer? If this site is inside Hollywood, I now understand why I find TV and movies less and less entertaining.
Stephen Merchant (who helped Gervais write many of the Jokes) comment’s after the show were pretty much deadon, I thought:
“I was just generally proud of the fact that it was spiky and it was fun,” Mr. Merchant said. “It keeps these shows relevant, I think to be self-mocking. A lot of stars were very gracious and sort of gave him a nod and like, we knew something was coming. I think that’s good. In a time when people are struggling to make ends meet, I think it’s important that celebrities can see that they can laugh at themselves, that we don’t just presume that this is real life. It’s nice to prick the bubble.”
“We thought it was going well,” he added. “It got the right mix of laughter and gasps.”
He was very funny last night and to all the millionaires he was rude to… Well they should get a tougher skin
Have you met “Dan” and “Middle America?”
And by “Have you met” I mean “We all know it’s you posting under the names”
We get it, you hate millionaires. You’re obviously a socialist.
Hope you enjoyed your moment Gervais. From here on out Brangelina has you blacklisted
he had some good numbers, and he had balls.
the heather mills gag was good, the scientology gag was good, the charlie sheen routine was funny, and really – that was all in the papers.
and willis *has* done a ton of bad films.
he played it as a roast to a room of people drinking. The people with a sense of humour laughed.
De Niro near pissed himself during the opening monologue.
also hanks was close to a total pompous ass with his “he used to be kind” bit – ricky gervais has always done unapologetic, acerbic humour.
anyone questioning the appropriateness of his routine should only look at the ludicrously frozen self regarding angelina jolie resting back like a mannequin in her husbands arms. that was insane.
hollywood got what was actually a pretty well humoured piss take.
the only thing I’d say was that he might have stayed away from the teeth in comment. but sod it – it was his show, and he took it by the short and curlys.
hollywood – If you’re going to choose be pompous, narcissistic and self involved about a middle grade piss take – well, take a look at your year on year grosses for the last three months – the decline is a bit staggering isn’t it?
I don’t get it, why was Angelina sitting with her husband insane?
Ricky was pure genius last night.
But he forgot to introduce Oprah to Uma!
I thought Ricky Gervais was hilarious, last night. Although I have to say I am disapointied in the winners last night. Glee won for best comedy series, seriously? It feels like I am one of the few people in the world ho HATES Glee. And while Jim Parsons probably deserved his award for best actor, I really wanted Steve Carell to win since this is his last season.
If Glee is comedy then Tom Cruise is a Roman Catholic. I’ve never once seen a joke in Glee. If the dysfunctional mish mash of neurotic people is the joke, I don’t get it.
Ironically, once upon a time, he WAS a Catholic. Wasn’t he in the seminary?
It won for best Comedy OR Musical. In some minds its both. Either way it qualifies.
Watching Glee is like sitting through the same off-off-off Broadway musical over and over … for eternity. The songs may change, but the dialogue, characters and “jokes” are exactly the same week to week. Jane Lynch’s character is the very personification of a one-trick pony.
Ricky Gervais went to far, this was always the most enjoyable show,
He was extremely mean and the show will not have that many well known stars appear if they are going to be made fools of. A joke O,K. but not so mean.
If there is a chance that they’ll get an award plus tons of free gifts, then celebrities will continue to flock, even if they will be made fun of for one night a year.
Agreed. Stars are self-proclaimed fame whores. The idea that they hate all the attention is pretense. The ones who were offended took the jokes a little too seriously. And it was probably refreshing for America to see Hollywood poking fun at its own for a change instead of conservatives and Christians. Ricky, you rock.
any reason for deleting my comment? how luvvie is this website? it was reasoned no?
oh no wait – i was just having mistaken delusions of grandeur while refreshing the page. i am but spermatozoa of commenting – please carry on.
The very fact that he has to issue a statement explaining himself and reassuring the public that “nothing was wrong” should tell even a first-year public relations assistant that something was wrong.
The only ones who thought anything was wrong are you lunatic Jolie & Pitt fans who can’t take anyone calling out your idols.
Talkin’ to me, sweetie? Not one word has been uttered about Jolie by a single one of the many critics of Gervais’s performance, but nice try.
And shouldn’t you be off earning your 35-cents-per-post by plugging away on the gossip blogs as you try to convince everyone that Granny Aniston looks “Fab at 50″ in her latest half-naked pics (released, of course, to TRY to promote her latest “movie”). What on earth would she do if she had to promote something (anything) with her clothes ON? Heaven forbid she rely on her “talent.” *guffaw* BTW, missed her at the GGs, but then, it was for “A-LISTERS ONLY,” so there was obviously no reason for her to be there.
Not a single one of the criticisms of Gervais in the press or Blogosphere have mentioned Jolie, so where is the logic in your comment? Oh, that’s right, it’s non-existent.
I’m a huge Ricky Gervais fan, but quite honestly I didn’t find the show that funny. I mean, introducing Robert Downey Jr. by mentioning his stint in rehab? What is this, 2003?
My sentiments exactly. His biggest crime wasn’t skewering people, it was not being very funny while he was doing it.
Ricky did everything in a classic way, with no profanity. All the people complaining still talk to TMZ and Enquirer reporters, who publish statements that pass as news. This guy was just telling some jokes. Lighten up out there!
I can’t believe how many celebrities can’t stand being made fun of–and take themselves that seriously. pshhh. GOOD JOB RICKY, I thought the jokes were hilarious XD
Which celebrities are you referring to? Who are the ones who could not “stand being made fun of?” Other than the single instance of comparatively tame remarks from Hanks and Allen on stage, what other quotes or statements of complaint have you seen from those who were made fun of?
I think that, because some comment posters, critics and other observers opined that Gervais went too far, a great number of people who deeply despise actors as a whole(feelings premised upon nonsensical, fictitious stereotypes manufactured by certain pols and pundits) have manufactured in their minds a non-existent hue and cry from those who were the butt of the jokes.
Sorry. For those of you who are relishing the supposed anguish, hurt and writhing outrage of other human beings, the vast majority of them simply moved on. Some even laughed. And then most went on to very nice parties.
R g ; luv his original unique style;
reminds me of conans’ insult dog, hi lariously mean…….
did anyone see a plain looking women there????
Sorry not allowed.
