EXCLUSIVE: First, it started out as an Alien Prequel. But then it morphed into something “more original”, an insider tells us –
even though Hollywood kept referring to the project as “The Alien Prequel” right up until today when Twentieth Century Fox officially announced the new Ridley Scott production as Prometheus is now bound for worldwide release on March 9th, 2012. Returning to science fiction filmmaking for the first time since Blade Runner, Scott will direct this epic. Of the five major roles to be cast, Noomi Rapace is the first actor signed to star (as “Elizabeth Shaw”), and we hear that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both circling the other big female lead (“Vickers”).
The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Ridley’s idea. Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek) and Scott have since been working together on the current version which has expanded the story into new directions. We hear they were instructed to “go off and come up with what they want” using the ‘Alien DNA’. Though story details are being closely guarded, Ridley explained the outlines of the film and its genesis as follows: “While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”
Says Lindelof: “In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.”
Swedish actress Noomi Rapace landed the scientist’s role after Scott saw her portrayal of fictional Lisbeth Salander in the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as well as the rest of the Steig Larssen. All Fox would say is that the other roles “would be cast soon”.

Damon Lindelof huh? Cool we can look forward to a mysterious island in another galaxy where strange things happen to the astronauts who are foolish enough to go there. Lots of flashbacks and flashforwards with each one killing off one of the main characters by an alien smoke monster. The island can be on a planet like Pandora. This is what Damon is good at it’s all he knows how to do.
Hope it’s Charlize. Jolie will ruin it.
Wait, did Damon just say he used to grab his ankles in movie theatres as a kid??
I’m really intrigued to see how this movie turns out. It could either be very epic or incredibly disappointing. They should go for more of the horror aspect that made Alien so great. If they do action, something Scott didn’t do much of in Alien, it might fail to live up to expectations considering Aliens is one of the greatest sci-fi action movies. Either way, I’m cautiously optimistic because Ridley is returning to sci-fi, but at the same time, he’s been very hit and miss lately, added to the extremely high expectations people are already going to have going in to the film.
When I first heard Sir Ridders was doing an Alien prequel, I groaned and the project was beneath him, why would such an original film maker do that?
The fact that Ridley is returning to the Sci Fi genre with an original story is reason to be full of joy, it will be epic, and he is the only director who can challenge James Cameron. Whatever Ridley comes up with it will be awesome!
So get over the Alien thing, let’s move on and embrace the creative process!
This is one of the first movies Ive seen that is swinging mostly for worldwide grosses and not just domestic. It will feature one of the biggest foreign stars to come along in years(Noomi Rapace) and if they cast Angelina Jolie in a supporting role who is coming off of the domestic flop but foreign hit that was “the Tourist” they can probably talk the star price tag to a reasonable costar price but still make tons overseas.I think from reading all the interviews that have been made about this project that the Xenomorph will show up as some sort of byproduct creation of the Prometheus project which is a terraforming project.Alien is hugely popular overseas and just the rumors that it will be in it will bring the fanboy community to the theater.
“Bound” for world release…I see what you did there.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RE-HIRE H.R.GIGER!!!
The question has always been out there. Are the aliens intelligent or are they just the universe’s most deadly pests. All of the movies so far have cast them as simple albeit very dangerous, pests.
ALIENS is the best movie of all time. Danger. Love. Family. Action. Ripley! Newt! Anyway, I look forward to this new creation and offer my approval as a number one fan.
Damon here are our notes for your next draft, we’re very happy with the current draft but we feel that these minor tweaks will help broaden the appeal. Please keep these notes confidentail and don’t share them with Sir Ridley, we’re not yet ready to include him in this process because we don’t think he’ll understand what we want here. You as the writer are more in tune with our needs.
We want the aliens to be sympathetic. Maybe humans destroyed their planet and they’re really angry and have a right to be angry. The aliens need to have a strong character arc. They should start out peaceful and happy pacifists who never hurt anything they’re vegetarians but after the bad humans pollute their planet the aliens become carnivores and freedom fighters. The raptors in Jurassic Park were only doing what evolution programmed them to do they weren’t bad it was the humans who were bad for bringing them back to life. We also want to appeal to audiences on other planets so keep that in mind. As far as we know other planets outnumber our own therefore we can make more money by showcasing the aliens.
Your human characters need to be both good and bad. There should be a greedy yuppie corporate guy like Paul Reiser in the second Alien movie he wants to exploit the alien planet for its mineral wealth like in Avatar. The other humans should be bold explorers and Noomi’s character should join forces with the aliens to fight the greedy yuppies. This worked well in Avatar so we want to duplicate it if possible. We’re all very excited about the progress you’ve made so far, and we’re confident your next draft, if you make these changes, will really make it better. Once you’ve made these changes then we can get together with Sir Ridley and see what he thinks. Thanks Damon.
Unfortunately, that idea will not work saying that they were peace loving hippies. It might have if they stuck to the original story line with Alien v Predator (Predators dropped eggs on planets with minor life forms to create simple drone to train on).
Then you have all the books and comics that came with the Alien franchise indicating that the alien culture is more hive like and that each hive don’t exactly get along with each other.
I haven’t seen any fururistic publications involving the Predators where as with Aliens I’ve seen loads, so maybe the Aliens do get revenge and wipe out the Predators.
This Noomi Rapace thing is getting out of hand. She’s not a star in America, guys, and may never be. I’ve seen the first two Swedish films based on Larsson’s books and she’s fine, but I wouldn’t rush out to see her. As much as Hollywood seems to love her, they probably love her quote more.
It reminds me of Hollywood’s flirtation with Franka Potente.
Why are people still clinging to the idea this is an Alien film, or set in the Alien universe? To me ‘Alien DNA’ just means this is going to be a dark and atmospheric science fiction/creature movie. If it was going to have any relationship to the alien franchise, i highly doubt they’d be playing it down to the extent they do in those quotes!
20th Fox killing the Alien franchise and wasting Ridley Scott like this… IT IS JUST INSANE. Rupert Murdoch and his managers deserve to get fired.
This movie is going to be nothing good. 20th Fox promised an Alien Prequel and now they are going to sell just another sci-fi movie that has nothing to do with Alien.
This just sucks.
It’s sounds like the ‘White Squall/Robin Hood’ of sci-fi movies. And Jolie? No thanks. Let’s remember that part of reason ‘Alien’ was so good was that it didn’t have any stars in it and we could get lost in the character journeys without being distracted by some A-lister playing astronaut.
Putting Jolie in it is like putting the biggest female star of the late 70s in Alien and I don’t think anyone wanted to see Jane Fonda in that particular movie.
I could not be happier. The Alien movies (or anything related to them) deserve better treatment than the usual hack job prequel/reeboot noise thats flooding theaters. Also, I think its absolutely brilliant that Ridley Scott is directing, no one better for the job in my humble opinion. The only thing that even gives me a shred of concern is this “original idea in a new universe” concept. It certainly sounds exciting, but as a fan of the original movie, I do have fear of Scott going too far away from his creative base. However, I suppose that something new taking important traits from what it is born from is one of the prime essences of the Alien movies.
I am so hoping that Ridley Scott will take the same tone in this movie, as he did with the original. When watching Alien recently, it had such a timeless quality to it. It is still just as terrifying as it was back 30 years ago. The ship was beat up looking, the actors seemed like real people. There wasn’t a great deal of music in the back ground, and the feel was just balanced enough. Same with Blade Runner. I hope that Mr. Scott looks at these kinds of posts, and takes them to heart. We don’t NEED special effects and 3D when it comes to this story line. We do want a story where we can believe that something fantastic is happening to real people.
Seriously? Why would you cast Jolie in this movie? Use her to try to peddle some POS that has no other draw. Even next to Johnny she couldn’t help up The Tourist. Sir Ridley alone can open this movie regardless if it’s prequel, sequel (please don’t) or original. People have been waiting years for his return to sci-fi!
@Balen: sorry but what? Like there were no special effects on the first Alien movie,uh?… The fact that they did an outstanding job with the technology available at the time doesn’t mean that there were no special effects.
Jeez are some people not reading this properly ? There not making an Alien prequel anymore, but a completely new sci fi film set in a different universe which means know Alien !!
sounds good
from what I hear the story may still be set in the Aleins film quanity but still be its own story. giving that a lot of prequels fail because they try to hard to tie things back to the film(s) they spin off from (I’m looking at you star wars I-III)
So Lindelof, the guy who wrote the script for the most vague series ever is working with Ridley Scott ?
Fantastic!!!!
Another sci-fi cum fest on par with Cameron’s Avatar wankery.
Thanks but no thanks.
PASS!!!!
Sadness abounds. I mean, this new movie sounds very compelling. But after waiting 30 years to learn something about the Space Jockeys (not to mention the excitement over getting a real Alien film out of someone for the first time since 1986), I’m more than a little disappointed that I’m apparently going to have wait even longer. Probably forever. Sigh.
I’m going to invest some hope in that this movie is still dealing with the Space Jockeys, but in a context that doesn’t involve the Aliens on any level (so as to not ruin the shock factor of the original Alien in any way)… but we’ll see.
