EXCLUSIVE: Robert Pattinson has booked his first major lead for when he completes The Twilight Saga. Pattinson will star in Cosmopolis, the Don DeLillo novel adaptation that David Cronenberg wrote and will direct. Pattinson, who just starred with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in Fox 2000′s Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel Water For Elephants, will play Eric Packer. A financial wunderkind, Packer risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. His deed puts him in the crosshairs for assassination in a drama that is a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis. Most of the scenes in the book take place in the limousine that transports Packer from place to place. Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti are also reportedly doing the film, but those same reports had Colin Farrell poised to take the lead role.
As Pattinson and his Twilight Saga castmates plan their careers after the series is completed–Bill Condon is directing the final film right now, Pattinson is following a path based on strong filmmakers and tasteful source material. He took the role because he is a big fan of Cronenberg’s work and an admirer of DeLillo’s books. He’s repped by WME and 3 Arts.

Can Cronenberg actually direct another movie? Been reading in development articles since Aught 7.
Aaannnd… “the fandom” is now headed to Amazon to buy the book!
Congrats to Mr. Pattinson for choosing interesting and varied roles.
Good for him, something different. I like Croenenberg’s work, Pattinson will be challenged. He needs that.
whatever happened to colin farrell being in this picture? he would do an infinitely better job than pattinson
Colin Farrell dropped out to make Total Recall.
Since the movie is taking place mostly in a limousine, it would be too much like Colin’s “Phone Booth.”
Good for him, sounds like an interesting project
Awesome. Love Cronenberg, love Robert. So much win for this project in my eyes.
I. CAN’T. WAIT.
Will he finally be able to drop the American accent? I’m excited to see his interpretation. I’m impressed with the diversity of his movies.
wasn’t that meant to be colin farrell?
Wasn’t Colin Farrel suppose to have starred in this? Or is that another movie?
I second that congrats to Rob. I think his career will take the same direction of Leo Dicaprio’s or Johnny Depp. All excellent actors who pick interesting and unique films with great directors. What was the film Croenenberg did with Jeremy Irons about twins? Oh, Dead Ringers (I saw it a long time ago and just now looked it up.) Wow, that was weird. But good. Bravo to Rob.
I`m very impressed. There was a concern that his career might take turn like of that faded hack Orlando Bloom who opted to play the same swashbuckling cardboard cutout over and over again. But Pattinson`s choices prove that he is here to stay. This is an excellent challenge for him. Fingers crossed.
I have to applaud Pattinson’s film choices outside of Twilight. Water for Elephants, Bel Ami and now this are all top notch.
As much as I love Cronenberg, I’ll wait for reviews before I subject myself to Pattinson, who acts with his nostrils.
Excellent career move, that’s exactly what ANY young typecast pretty boy-actor SHOULD do : pair up with a remarkable director who won’t leave you alone until you deliver a stunning, completely unexpected performance.
At least that’s what catapulted today’s leading men from poster boy status into highly acclaimed superstars : Depp and Burton (1990 – Edward Scissorhands), Pitt and Fincher (1995 – Se7en), DiCaprio and Scorsese (2002 – Gangs of New York), Clooney and Soderbergh (1998 – Out of Sight). It took only ONE brilliant director to take them seriously and they not only proved but reinvented themselves, as well AND these films were only the beginning of THE most memorable collaborations of the last decade or so : Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, Ocean’s 11 – trilogy. All these films are big Box Office-hits and/or cult-films and/or Oscar-winners.
Though I do HATE Twilight (I can’t tolerate bad screenplays), I must say seeing Pattinson’s career choices, there is DEFINITELY potential there. He seems to be intelligent enough to realize that he should NOT be looking for the next big BO-hit because that will give him only 5 more years in the business (even less if the big-budgeted, shitty tentpole-wannabe flops) , meanwhile a critically acclaimed performance and maybe even an Oscar nomination, will guarantee him work for decades.
Water for Elephants and Bel Ami look promising, too.
wow what a speech!
Interesting observations, I agree. Twilight sucks, I think Mr. Pattinson has potentional and needs the right director to show not only him, but the world what he’s got.
Pattinson CAN act, make no mistake. He’s got the chops. Consider my ticket to COSMOPOLIS purchased.
and you base this statement on? He has not had a good performance as of yet, so you are either hopeful or his Mother? Agent? PR person?
Well I’VE seen all his movies, and I think he CAN act; …and you base your doubt on?
Check out “Little Ashes”, “How To Be” and “Remember Me”.
there is a scene in little ashes that I like the most wherein he is bald and screaming like a crazy artist but besides that his acting in other scene, well I really didn’t appreciate. But I still love him
Little Ashes was named one of the worst movies of 2009 and he was criticized for his acting in that movie so harshly. Remember Me was named one of the worst movies of 2010 and “How To Be”-what the hell is that? Don’t even get me started on Twilight. He’s not a good actor and he doesn’t choose good movies, plain and simple. If he was, his movies would get better reviewed. His only “fresh” movie on rottentomatoes.com was when he was in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (he was HORRIFIC in HP. I’m a die-hard potterhead and he almost ruined the movie for me). He was in Goblet of Fire for less than 5 minutes on camera. Robert Pattinson wins all of those stupid awards that don’t matter. It irks me that, even though they don’t mean a hill of beans, they could still go to someone who actually deserves them. He deserves barely any of the “praise” he gets. Then again, he doesn’t get praise by reviewers, just brain-dead teen girls and their mothers.
Robert Pattinson is no more than a “teen idol” to millions of fangirls for playing 1 role. He’s not going to have a successful career after Twilight. You can see that because every single movie he makes right now, in his “Twilight fame” makes absolutely NO money at the box office and doesn’t even get picked up by movie theaters to show.
I’m sorry, Twilight and RPattz fans, he’s just doesn’t have what it takes to make it in Hollywood. You’re never going to see him on stage accepting the Oscar for “Best Actor” or “Best Movie”. You’re just going to see him on stage in front of a bunch of 12 year olds accepting “Best Actor” at the Teen Choice Awards-which matter as much as how much a handful of dirt weighs. Who the frick cares…
Kristin,
You are correct, he will never be on stage at the Academy Awards accepting “Best Movie” as he would have nothing to do with the acceptance of that award.
You may hate it, but Pattinson has already made it as an actor in Hollywood. Whether or he maintains that status is up to him and the films he chooses. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
Remember Me is one of more profitable movies 2010.
He got good reviews.
His choices are interesting and based on good masterpieces of literature.
So… ?
Remember Me was underrated. It was a solid movie. Not the best, but definitely not the worst.
Time will tell whether Cosmopolis is decent or not and whether RP is able to turn in a skillful performance. Personally, I think if Cronenberg was able to get a passable performance out of Deborah Harry, then he should have no problem getting one out of Pattinson.
Kristen M…. better late than never!
It never ceases to amaze me how so much effort can be put into so much critizism when one is totally ignorant!
For your information “How To Be” is a movie Rob made in 2008. I would have thought it prudent to do a bit of research for just a couple of minutes before telling everyone what you think we should / shouldn’t find entertaining. Check out IMDB… always a minefield of information. How to Be is a quirky, humorous movie that was quite different to anything I have seen. This may come as a complete shock to you…Rob actually won the Best Actor award for this movie at the Strasbourg International Film Festival. Yes, I am aware it isn’t the BAFTAS or the OSCARS but it is a well respected organization.
Twilight will never be Rob’s best work, nor do I imagine he would ever claim it to be. He, as an actor, like the rest of us in our day to day jobs, gets better with experience. I believe he will make many great movies and I believe he may even make a stinker or two… but hey, even the great Jack Nicholson has done that!
By the way, I am not a brainless teenager or a brainless teenagers mother. I’m not a twihard or whatever else you like to label his fansgirls…I am not his mother, his aunt or his agent. I am a 50 year old woman who loves to escape to the movies and I have enjoyed each and every one of Rob’s movies – some more than others. I have just seen Water for Elephants which was based on a favourite book of mine and loved that it was an old fashioned Hollywood movie with no crazy special effects.
I am looking forward to the release of Bel Ami which has been held back because the money makers are worried that Rob playing a nasty character might upset the fans. The thing I most admire about Rob is that he choses his movies based on what interests him, not on what he thinks the fans might want to see him in.
Have you read Cosmopolis? Now that book is “out there”. I can’t wait to see Rob rise to the challenge under Cronenbergs direction.
My suggestion to you if you hate him so much is to avoid his movies and save yourself all the angst. …stick to the actors you like and follow their movies. That’s what I do.
Great news! Consider my ticket purchased as well!
His appeal continues to escape me but I wish him luck.
Given that his drawing power is unproven outside of sparkly vampires he is wise to seek credibility in smaller independent films.
Easy there on the Dicaprio and Depp comparisons. The jury is still very much out. Next thing you know his next few films under-perform or disappoint(Remember Me?…dreadful tripe) and everyone writes him off. A few years after he escapes that awful Twilight series…then we’ll know.
Man I hope its good. Has anyone read the book?
yes i have read it. it’s no picnic. that’s major. funny he always plays characters that are very ‘bad’, antisocial anyway. he finally persuaded cotillard . let’s see.
Bravo!!!! Good for him. He seems to be making some really good decisions about his career, and will hopefully prove that he is more than a pretty-boy heart-throb. He is a smart young man with a good head on his shoulders.
Sounds extremely interesting. I can visualize Pattinson much more so than Colin Farrell. Loved History of Violence.
And there goes any interest I might have had to watch this film. Cannot believe that David Cronenberg selected him to play the role. This guy can’t act his way out of a paper bag.
Well obviously Cronenberg thought he was right for the role. I’m guessing he knows a little bit about it than you do?
This is great news for everyone involved. Can’t wait to see the chemistry between Pattinson and Cotillard, under Cronenberg’s direction. This goes to the top of my future must-see list.
After reading this, all I can ask is WHY? I don’t have anything against Pattinson personally, but nothing he has done has legitimized him as a decent actor. How can you replace Colin Farrell with Robert Pattinson? And Pattinson and Cotillard as a couple seems completely odd and ill-fitting. Good luck to all involved with this film, you’re going to need it now.
This is a another good move for Pattinson. And if directors like Cronenberg are interested in working with him it shows 1) he can get a film greenlit and 2) there must be some compelling potential in his acting.
Yeah, this is what I’m taking from it. Physically, he’s the right age for the role, etc. I’m not totally convinced on his acting yet, but I think he has potential. BUT I also don’t believe the Cronenberg would toss this project away on a guy who can’t act just to get it greenlit. He surely could have someone else to replace Colin Ferrell. People want to work with him. So I’m going to assume that Cronenberg has liked what he has seen from Pattinson. We’ll all know when it hits the screen, I guess.
Sounds like a great cast! Looking forward to reading the book now.
