EXCLUSIVE: Robert Pattinson has booked his first major lead for when he completes The Twilight Saga. Pattinson will star in Cosmopolis, the Don DeLillo novel adaptation that David Cronenberg wrote and will direct. Pattinson, who just starred with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in Fox 2000′s Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel Water For Elephants, will play Eric Packer. A financial wunderkind, Packer risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. His deed puts him in the crosshairs for assassination in a drama that is a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis. Most of the scenes in the book take place in the limousine that transports Packer from place to place. Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti are also reportedly doing the film, but those same reports had Colin Farrell poised to take the lead role.
As Pattinson and his Twilight Saga castmates plan their careers after the series is completed–Bill Condon is directing the final film right now, Pattinson is following a path based on strong filmmakers and tasteful source material. He took the role because he is a big fan of Cronenberg’s work and an admirer of DeLillo’s books. He’s repped by WME and 3 Arts.

I love Don Delillo, but he should stay on paper.
Marion Cotillard and Robert Pattinson as love interests or as mother and son? If it’s so good why did Colin Farrell drop out? Need more information before I decide if this is good news or bad.
Ferrell dropped out because he took the lead in Total Recall instead. Yuck.
Yes. I read it would be a much bigger paycheck so he took Total Recall. Also, a bigger audience. I know actors want people to see their films. So, there is that as well. I thought Marion C. Was attached to project before Pattinson?
I kind of liked the book, but the script to “Cosmopolis,” which has been bumping around for awhile, was nothing special. That said, neither was the script to “A History of Violence” and look what Cronenberg did to that.
I’m cautiously optimistic. For all of his eccentricities, Cronenberg is a powerful director, demanding strong performances. Cotillard is always good, so that’s another positive. Pattinson… not sure. I really enjoyed him in ‘How To Be’ and ‘Little Ashes’, and there were scenes in ‘Remember Me’ where he was quite good. The trouble is, since ‘Twilight’ (awful movies), he seems to be content with ‘aloof and brooding’ as his range. Yes, he’s pretty, I get that, but that’s not enough to carry a role (even when broken up occasionally, as in ‘Remember Me’). The previews for ‘Water For Elephants’ aren’t particularly encouraging, as they show more prettybroody. The character Jacob in the novel was not that way at all, so all I can hope is that the previews are showing what they think the public wants to see, and Pattinson’s work is actually more fully-fleshed than those few scenes. Good for him, for attracting the attention of a director of this caliber. Hope he doesn’t waste the opportunity by phoning in a performance.
I despised this book, and I’m a fan of the author.
If Cronenberg hired this kid, then there’s got to be more to him. Period. Cronenberg may be a lot of things but he’s certainly no fool. And good on Pattinson for not doing a big money grab and instead going for a quality project like this.
Impressive move and he must have earned it.
He DOES have a great radio voice. Congrats to him. And, kudos to the guy who decided to film him and post it on the internet.
What the hell, Cronenberg are you getting stupid in your old age hiring this stiff as your lead, oh wait you want all the teeny weeny little girls watching it.
congrats to Robert and to Cronenberg as well! then people like those too work together i expect something no less than masterpiece. the role suits Rob just right, he will be very believable in it. and i am glad at least on one thing we all (obnoxious haters and hysterical fans) agree: he’s got a great taste. what really matters you can not be indifferent when it comes to Robert Pattinson.
Looks like everyone is still interested in Robert.
I just ordered the book from Amazon. If Pattinson is in it, on it or under it I will buy it.
Sorry, “Twilight” fans the jury is still out for Robert Pattinson. It is ridiculous to compare Robert to Leo & Johnny. Depp & DiCaprio showed acting potential in their early films- Pattinson still hasn’t shown his potential. Plus, Robert has no charisma whatsoever. I am willing to give Robert Pattinson a chance, if the late Farrah Fawcett, Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson, and Josh Brolin can surprise me with their acting talent- anyone can.
All these silly little people who think Patt can act, I’d laugh if this wasn’t so sad. But I’ll be right in the end – 2 years down the line, no-one will remember them. Just like Megan Fox, who I also predicted won’t last 4 years.
I used to be indifferent towards Pattinson before but after I’ve seen him in Little Ashes and Remember Me I thought this young man has the makings of becoming a very good actor. I will definitely look forward to Cosmopolis and I have no doubt that this actor/director tandem will surprise a lot of naysayers in a delightful way.
Congratz Rob, wishing you all the best. I hope you knock their socks off. You have my support!
Actually, on my way out to buy the book. See you on the big screen.
I’m excited about this. I really like the choices Robert is making for his post-Twilight career. He is choosing varied, interesting, different, and challenging roles. I admire that he chooses project because he finds the characters and the material intriguing. He is willing to take risks and doesn’t chose roles based on money or glory. Cosmopolis sounds intense, dark, and a bit of a thriller. Cronenberg has made some awesome films and I am excited to see how this project turns out.
The guy is making some interesting choices for his movie career. I’ll give him that. Instead of going for quick bucks, Robert is trying to make decent career before all this Twilight mania ends. If you go by his past movies, Robert Pattinson certainly can’t act. He hasn’t shown any range or talent to showcase his acting abilities.
David Cronenberg must see something in him. Cronenberg may have talked with other directors from Water for Elephant and Bel Ami about Robert’s acting. I am going to reserve my judgment until I see his other movies coming out this year? I have feeling this guy will need years to develop his acting chops or even reach some decent level. The question is will he have that same opportunities after Twilight?
I was really hoping after Twilight saga was over that this guy would just pull a Chappelle and disappear…darn it
Farrell dropped out and they got a backup. The script sucks and it was offered to Gosling and a few others who passed. At least they are only planning to spend 20 mil or so. Poor Cronenberg, imagine all those teenage Twilight fans on set. Marion Cottilard will drop out next.
I highly doubt Gosling and the few other actors would pass a chance to work with Cronenberg.
i agree not to many actors would pass on a cronenberg movie. colin did it because of his other project.
@the watcher im so glad that you can tell the future. maybe you can tell me the lotto numbers so i won’t have to go back to work. at least pattinson is trying to get away from twilight, and taking risk with his selection of roles. he could play safe and take another teenie bopper role.
Bravo to Robert Pattinson for looking for roles outside of Twilight that seem to be quality roles. I’m just amazed at how many people like to tear him down. Oh well with his money made off being a vampire, I hope he’s laughing all the way to the bank!!!
How can this combination lose. It has two great minds. I am quite sure of the success.
listen you people above robert is great.period
Pattinson was picked for the role because he’s “bankable”.. they could not get the financing otherwise to make the movie. It’s a good thing Pattinson has some great supporting actors supporting him, otherwise he’d be laughable.
Completely uninterested in the idea of Farrell in this role.
