EXCLUSIVE: Sam Rockwell has signed on to join Brad Pitt in the Andrew Dominik-directed comic crime saga Cogan’s Trade. Pitt plays Jackie Cogan, a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game held under the protection of the mob. The picture is an ensemble and Rockwell’s role isn’t set but I understand he’s committed. Rockwell last worked with Pitt and Dominik in The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Their Jesse James co-star Casey Affleck has been also rumored as a possible participant.
Dominik adapted the Georg V. Higgins novel. The film’s being financed by Inferno Entertainment, which will handle international sales. Plan B’s Pitt and Dede Gardner are producing with Chockstone’s Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz. Inferno’s Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel will be exec producers with Marc Butan, and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. CAA is packaging it.
Rockwell is in the Oscar hunt for his role of the wrongly imprisoned man Kenny Waters alongside Hilary Swank in Conviction, and he recently wrapped the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys and Aliens opposite Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, and the Jonah Hill comedy The Sitter. He’s repped by Gersh.

Same cast at Jesse James… Can’t wait. WTG CAA and INFERNO. Wahoo.
Must feel great to be a CAA client, hearing they’re packaging projects with Gersh actors.
Get over yourself; Rockwell is a great actor who is extremely highly respected by his peers. Most actors would be thrilled to be working with him and could give two shits about which agency reps him. You’re a moron if you think serious actors care about that crap.
AGREED! Rockwell is terrific – “Moon” was an astounding perf that few saw. Regardless of Pitt, I’d watch this for Sam.
Maybe it was me but TAOJJ was slower than Heaven’s Gate, PASS!
Jesse James was one of the more beautiful cinematic experiences in recent memory. Try being open to films with different pacing, you’ll be surprised how rewarding it can be.
Yep, it was you.
And TAOJJ made about as much money as Heaven’s Gate.
It was you. Assassination was the best movie of the decade.
It wasn’t you Jo – TAOJJ was ass-achingly boring. I like Sam Rockwell but anything with Pitt as the lead is a must-miss (I thought Inglorious B. was great, but that was because of everyone else in the movie, and definitely not Pitt, who was billed as the lead but wasn’t really.)
I believe this is going to be more in the vein of a black comedy. Comedy is probably the wrong word and the humour will hopefully be pitch black but I wouldn’t give up on this project just yet, jo. Just think of Chopper instead, if TAOJJ didn’t work for you.
I don’t think Andrew Dominik will be a director that you can easily pigeonhole. I doubt every project will be a slow burn meditation on whatever the subject happens to be.
I still think he should’ve gotten an Oscar for “Moon”. Anywhoo, I’m kinda over Brad, but love him in comedic roles so I might check this one out.
It’s you. It’s a great and beautiful film. Maybe you need more explosions and spaceships to keep your attention.
The people who don’t like Jesse James usually just have no understanding of film making, story telling or character development and relationships. If you don’t like the film then go watch more Michael Bay movies, It will suit you better.
