Saturday Night Live last night took on the new NBC superhero drama The Cape with fake promos for other NBC series about “superheroes who get their superpowers from items of clothing,” including The Scarf, The Scrunchy and The Spanx. Meanwhile, Paul Reubens is already getting online support for a hosting gig on SNL after his turn as Pee-wee opposite Andy Samberg in last night’s digital short. Videos below:

Usual trash.
Good show. Kristen Wiig is the new Carol Burnett.
I bash SNL endlessly–deservedly.
But those two pieces were both well-executed. Credit.
Why didn’t they shoot the Samberg skit in a triple-X adult theater like the one Pee Wee was arrested in back in ’91? That would have been way funnier and young Samberg could have learned a thing or two.
What the fuck? Did I lose my sense of humor somewhere in the mid-90′s or was that NOT funny? Seriously. The way the studio audience cheered in anticipation when they saw the words “SNL Digital Short”, as if “Oh boy! I’ve been waiting for THIS!” and, like all other Digital Shorts, we’re left with polite chuckles and overall disgust once it ends. It’s not that SNL is not funny anymore – NOTHING is that funny anymore. The way comedy has changed, it’s sad.
You didn’t lose your sense of humor at all. This show, in general and with few exceptions, hasn’t been funny in forever. I don’t understand why these even pop up here — they’re not funny and not relevant.
And Kristen Wiig is the new Carol Burnett? More like Wiig is the latest female cast member of SNL to play every single sketch as a crazy woman.
Oh, grandpa.
And, for the record, I’m not a big SNL supporter. But if you’re looking for “What comedy is now”, SNL is the last place you should be looking. But there’s a lot of very cool and very funny stuff out there online, on podcasts, and on cable. But until then, comments like “Nothing is that funny anymore” are just embarrassing.
Too damn long!
Indeed, but that’s pretty much every SNL sketch. There’s a funny idea in there somewhere, but they drag it out to death. They’ve done that for years.
It seems odd to parody The Cape — since surely that show is supposed to be comedy, right? I mean if you are presenting Summer Glau as an “actor”, that has to be parody, surely?
It made me happy. I still love me some pee wee
PEE WEE is a PERV!!! I won’t even watch that shit! I’m 56 years old, remember when comics had class and only watch Jay L. because he has MORALS.
Thanks, Doc. Glad you see my point. What’s really heartbreaking, is you have a comic genuis like Paul Rubens, a very creative and funny man, who’s hardly in ANYTHING anymore, as Hollywood has put him out to pasture with all the other aging comics – in a crappy sketch. It’s as if there’s a new style of comedy that’s out there: bland comedy. Not only is SNL not funny, nor is anything Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey or the rest of the dull minded hacks we call comic genuises who have helped changed the comedy landscape to the wasteland it is today – any good.
Why does Deadline feel this awful, 30 years past its prime skit show is worth highlighting every week. Its irrelevant now and has been for a long time.
SNL is as funny or not funny as it’s ever been. Please stop bitching about it if you don’t like it. Obviously many people, like myself, are fans and find it worth watching for the writing and performances, even if it’s sometimes lacking. I still never get tired of watching these people churn out new episodes live every week.
Samberg is keeping SNL afloat…
I smell a big bonus.
Reubens, a genius? I want what you’re smoking. He looks 100 and hasn’t been funny in 40 years and maybe not even then. I don’t know why Samburg bothered. It was painful to watch.
SNL is bad as always.
Come on – I hate SNL normally, and The Cape spoof was not even smile worthy, BUT the Pee Wee Herman piece was pretty darn funny. You could criticize it as being too much “Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?” imitation, but it’s still pretty darn funny. Any time Anderson Cooper gets hit by a chair, I am going to laugh. Every time. And if they could curse on the show, the Chairy line would have been laugh out loud funny.
SNL is still on the air????
Reubens hasn’t been put out to pasture because of his age, it’s because he’s unpredictable and got put on that sex offender list for the kid porn. He copped a guilty plea, remember? And that was just a year or so ago. The Cape parody was funny as hell, along with the rest of the show. I forgot how good SNL can be. But if they book Reubens as a host they may get picketers.
