UPDATE: Roadside Attractions closed the deal for The Future. It’s the third deal for Roadside, which teamed with Lionsgate to acquire the JC Chandor-directed financial crisis drama Margin Call, and will release the documentary Project Nim for HBO, which acquired all rights to the film by the team behind the Oscar-winning Man on Wire. Roadside will release The Future theatrically through its North American rights deal, and Lionsgate will handle ancillary territories. Filmmaker Miranda July won the Camera ‘Or with her debut film Me And You And Everyone We Know.
EARLIER, JANUARY 26, 8:22 PM: Now that The Devil’s Double has closed at Lionsgate, the next Sundance picture in play is the Miranda July-directed The Future. It’s down to the wire, with IFC and Roadside Attractions battling it out. Narrated by a cat, the pic tells the story of a thirty-something couple that plans to adopt a terminally ill shelter cat. Before taking on that responsibility, they quit their jobs to discover new interests. She makes dance videos and he knocks on doors for a tree-planting environmental group. They engage in some trippy, existential adventures. UTA is brokering. Developing…

I hope it’s IFC. I don’t like the direction Roadside Attractions are going with their business.
At both Toronto and Sundance they seem to circle every indie that has a star attached that got passed on by the studios.
Their 2011 slate is already piling up with marginal fair like The Conspirator, Margin Call, Everything Must Go, etc.
They should be pursuing quality films. Titles like The September Issue, Winter’s Bone is what brought attention to the company and would probably lead to better success in the long run.
The Future is suppose to be great…either studio would be lucky to have it! I think IFC released her first film?
Miranda July is the worst
Yes! A new Miranda July film! Can’t wait!!!!!!

When the topic of white folks being given VERY long leashes to fail in Hollywood comes up, I always have a mental picture of Miranda July. She has talent — in a fringe Fort Lauderdale Arts Festival kind of way, and certainly NOT in a mainstream Hollywood way. And yet, Hollywood keeps on and on indulging her. If she were black or Asian or Latina do you really think she’d be getting so many at-bats with reputable producers and distributors. God, you gotta love Hollywood and its not-too-thinly veiled racism.
Are we talking about the same Miranda July? leash?? She’s only done shorts! And has written one other feature. Give her some slack.
You are delusional or are pissed she got married.
I doubt it is racism. Did you not just see that Pariah was bought by Focus? That is a film about a black lesbian teenager.
I think better questions – with all of these films being bought that have no stars and very uncommercial plot lines – are who is going to see any of these movies and why are they even being bought?
I’ve been wondering the same exact thing. The Future, Gun Hill Road, Pariah, On The Ice, I can’t imagine seeing any of these.
Gina Kwon is all i have to say about the veiled racism commnent. do your research.
