EXCLUSIVE: Mickey Liddell’s Liddell Entertainment has acquired domestic and most world rights to the horror film Silent House in a deal just brokered by CAA. I’m told the deal is a $3 million minimum guarantee, and a P&A commitment upwards of $3 million. Liddell gets all territories but UK,
Scandanavia and the Middle East. Liddell, who made a splash last year backing the acquisition of the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed Biutiful, is working with CAA to set a distributor. Several are circling, including Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company. The film made its debut in a Friday midnight screening. A remake of the Gustavo Hernandez-directed Uruguayan thriller La Casa Muda, Silent House is the second film by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, filmmakers who helmed the 2004 Sundance midnight pic Open Water.
Elizabeth Olsen heads the cast. A family returns to their former boarded up house to spruce it up for sale. Once they hear a noise inside and investigate, the scares begin. The film was done in one long continuous shot, which could prove a catchy technique like those “found footage” fright films Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity.

no judgments, but this “catchy technique” was attempted by hitchcock in 1948 with his film ‘rope’…the entire endeavor proved distracting and in the long run simply ok…granted, shooting digital relieves filmmakers of the need for artificial melds between 10 minute reels, a problem the master faced…and of course ok for hitchcock was still pretty damned decent…anyway, best of luck to kentis and lau, who did such a nice job with relatively little in ‘open water’…
This sounds like an interesting deal. I’m assuming Liddell would partner with a distributor and basically “rent” their distribution apparatus, put up the P&A and strike a more favorable deal than he might if he was just a producer with no P&A money? Does anyone out there know the details of how this sort of a deal might work? Is this a common thing to do – basically come in with P&A financing?
I know Mickey and was not surprised to hear he had backed the acquisition of Biutiful. Mickey has a lot of heart and passion. He was moved by the movie and felt he HAD to step up. If he is passionate for a film, it doesn’t matter what genre it is– he goes for it. You’re in inspiration, honey, and the next time I see you I’m going to do a little cheerleading set for you. Pompoms included.
