EXCLUSIVE: Oscilloscope is close to a deal to acquire English language territories for Bellflower, the Evan Glodell-directed action film which premiered January 21 in Sundance’s Next Films category of low budget fare. Glodell made his helming debut in a film that is described as an apocalyptic love story for the Mad Max generation. Glodell stars with Jessie Wiseman, Tyler Dawson and Rebekah Brandes. Two slightly delusional pals build flamethrowers and other weapons of mayhem to prepare for a global apocalypse they feel will open the door for an
imaginary gang they’ve invented called Mother Medusa. When one of them falls for a woman, the pair finds themselves integrated into new a group of people, set on a journey where all hell breaks loose. CAA is handling the sale, and I hear it’ll go down shortly, with David Fenkel, who co-founded Oscilloscope with Adam Yauch. It’s the first acquisition of the festival for Oscilloscope.

The only movie of the eighteen in whole or part I managed to see that was insanely alive. An excellent company for its distribution.
“Mad Max Generation”? You mean fifty to sixty year olds? Mad Max came out in 1979.
Rebekkah Brandes will be big, she was amazing!
This movie was so horrible, this makes me genuinely laugh… The idea of these two guys creating this flamethrower was original, but sorely disappointed 1/2 way through the film. One of the worst movies I have ever seen.
I can’t agree more. This was awful! It was such a pathetic attempt to reach out to the “unreachable” hipster demographic. Shitty acting, horrendous shooting, editing and sound design. People were laughing at the screening I saw. It was kinda sad. Really surprised that this movie actually made it into Sundance in the first place. Somebody must have had friends on the board over there.
Agree with Jen. This movie was terrible. None of the characters had jobs, backstories, or lives I wanted to care about. The female characters clearly came from the mind of someone harmed by a breakup and unclear about women. In short, Bellflower felt like 3 hours of #whiteguyproblems.
Since films about #whiteguyproblems rarely if ever get made and distributed, it’s a miracle that this was picked up at Sundance.
Quoting the director when asked what the film is about:
“Alright, it’s a movie about two guys, two best friends. Who are completely obsessed with the apocalypse and blowing stuff up and building flamethrowers. Uh, which is just something they kind of joke around about. And then one of them falls in love and goes on this epic journey where he has his heart broken. And the film tries to illustrate how terrible it is to have your heart ripped out.”
You guys are harsh
Sure, it was amateurish. A group of young unknowns worked on writing, producing, shooting and acting their first-ever foray into film. Spending only $17,000 of their own movie and giving a year of their time. Cool Beastie Boy / Adam Yauck – Oscilloscope buys the film after it makes Sundance and the film grosses a mere $168,000 box office. It will probably make double that on dvd and blu-ray sales. Sure, it had some laugable parts and was kind of stoner stupid with not much character development, but it had its moments. And yes, it was alive and quite an accomplishment for a bunch of untrained unknowns. This Glodell could be the next Larry Clarke for all we know.
