EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-winning documentary director Alex Gibney has found his next hot-button film subject. Universal Pictures has just acquired a documentary that Gibney will direct about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The film will be the first project involving Marc Shmuger since he left the chairman post at Universal. Shmuger and Gibney are producing.
Whether it’s Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, or the Jack Abramoff documentary Casino Jack and the United States of Money, Gibney usually tells his stories with input from his subjects. Will Assange cooperate? I’m told it’s inconclusive. Universal confirmed the deal but
wouldn’t elaborate. The WikiLeaks docu follows a deal announced yesterday by feature producers who optioned an upcoming book about Assange. There are plenty of those in the works, including a memoir Assange is writing to defray his massive legal fees. The Gibney/Shmuger documentary is the first film to involve a major studio. The studio component came through Shmuger, who is expected to reemerge as a producer at Universal.
Since launching his whistle-blower website in 2006, Assange has revealed some of the most serious secret government documents since The New York Times published The Pentagon Papers. They range from footage of an Apache helicopter’s firing fatally on journalists and civilians in Baghdad to last November’s deluge of diplomatic cables that left the U.S. government red-faced and outraged. Assange is currently the subject of a sex assault rap, allegations he claims are false and politically motivated.

Big Uni (not Focus?!) in the docu business now? That will save the studio…
Big Uni is involved because Julian Assange isn’t really who he says he is. He is leaking information ON BEHALF of the United States government. Do you really think someone who truly exposes the government for what it is would get the mainstream media attention that he is receiving.
Also, keep in mind he surely didn’t leak anything new. If anything the diplomatic cables he “leaked” benefited the US government.
I don’t buy that guy for one second.
Subject matter aside – Uni bought a documentary….
I agree, and I said this from get-go. He’s ‘our’ baby.
Hopefully the Doc doesn’t get “leaked” before its released. LOL yeah I said it, lighten up its Friday!!!
Hell of a way to make a Buck.
Love his work-can’t wait to see it. What a great 1,2 punch in Gibney and Shmuger !

Interesting to see heavies like Alex Gibney and Marc Shmuger get involved in the Wikileaks project. It looks like some serious brass are in this; otherwise I’d just assume it to be another generic buy that will never get made. Why does Uni think this will be the one?
Has anybody seen any progress on this since February? Last I heard, both Alex and Marc Shmuger had been signed, but I don’t think this project has entered production yet, has it? Are they going to let the other studios beat them to the Wikileaks prize?
Any word on which project is going to hit first? The Dreamworks-Spielberg documentary, or the Dreamworks-Alex Gibney-Marc Shmuger project? I have good money that says the first one to hit screens will be the winner in this one. I say late 2011 or early 2012. So far, Speilberg is getting all the press, but Gibney/Shmuger had the first move. Somebody has to have an inside line on this. Deadline, help us out! Let us know!
Here’s what I don’t get. Why does everyone think that all these movies are going to be good for Wikileaks? Everyone is talking about the Uni and Dreamworks projects, as if Gibney, Shmuger, and Spielberg are going to cast Assange as a hero. But my money says that all of these films are going to make Assange look like the southern end of a northbound steer. They say any publicity is better than no publicity, but I don’t think that’s true for Assange. These movies are just going to rehash the mainstream storyline about sexual assault and Sweden, rather than the lives that were changed by the leaks themselves. Something about how criminals are more interesting than paper.
Any word on if the Wikileaks project is in production yet? Would love an update as to the status of any of these films (the Dreamworks not-quite-Spielberg project, the Uni Alex Gibney + Marc Shmuger deal, the HBO deal, etc). Seems like Wikileaks is in the news every week in 2011 but nobody is talking about the movies anymore.
I’ll bet dollars to donuts that the studios drop the Wikileaks movies in favor of new insta-docus about the Osama bin Laden raid. There’s no way that Marc and Alex are going to want to make a Wikileaks movie in 2011 when the OBL raid is the biggest news of the decade (so far). Too bad, I was going to be interested in seeing it, but I’m sure Gibney in particular would love to get on a OBL project instead. Anyone else agree? Uni will move Marc and Alex to the OBL project if they’re lucky.
