- Cinema Verite is about the groundbreaking 1970s PBS series An American Family, considered the first reality show. Reality TV “was such an intellectual exercise in the beginning, and it’s turned to such shit,” Gandolfini said. Asked if he watches reality TV, he said that he has “seen Real Housewives of Atlanta — that was extraordinary.” Jersey Shore? “No no no.”
- After the session, a beaming Gandolfini was asked why he had never looked so happy and smiling at previous TCAs. “Because I was on The Sopranos,” he said. “Because I worked 150 hours a week on a show, beating up women.” As for the long-gestating Sopranos movie, he indicated that it isn’t happening.
Kate Winslet, star of HBO’s upcoming mini-series Mildred Pierce and James Gandolfini, co-star of the the network’s upcoming film Cinema Verite, were on hand for their projects’ panels at TCA today. Here are a few amusing soundbites from the two:
- Winslet, who took part via satellite from Paris, on the difference between working in film and TV: “Film, shmilm. I’m telling you television is so much harder.”
- Winslet said she only watched the first 5 minutes of the 1945 movie starring Joan Crawford before turning it off. “I wouldn’t have been able to unsee it. I wanted to honor the book and be true to it.”

James Gandolfini – don’t insult the Sopranos too much
we’re counting on you to star in the theatrical Sopranos film
it won’t be the same without you.
Watch out, Mr. Gandolfini: spending 150 hours a week getting to beat up women sounds like you’re chomping at the bit for a soundbite that could definitely RUIN an already slow career. Let’s face it: the writers did more for SOPRANOS than some of the superficial acting (I say SOME. Won’t mention names.) You see the same people on the way up as on the way down. If you’re itching to work, try producing. Now THAT’s hard, and a 24/7 job, if that’s what you miss.
I disagree..you sound angree with your own life
I agree. The Sopranos made his career and if he doesn’t want to make a film, that’s fine. David Chase should make a new Sopranos series about the lives of tony’s mother and father. I think that would be an awesome show.
I’ve always said that a series about the life of Uncle Junior, Johnny Boy and Olivia in the early days would be phenomenal. They are such great characters. That being said, I would sure love to see Big T back in the saddle again!
At least writing about Johnny Boy, Junior and Liv we’d already have a REAL ending to those characters’ stories than the thumb in the eye Chase gave us with the finale. Nothing is more intellectually lazy than building a very complex narrative and then when it’s time to wrap it up all you can manage to do is……………
Roll credits.
It was a great ending. You have to understand what David Chase was doing. Watch the last 10 minutes again. The camera view continually flips from Tony’s view to a general view. The black is the last thing Tony sees. The guy in the members only jacket kills him. He is also the only person seen coming through the door who is still outside the restaurant when Tony looks up. Keep in mind an episode in season 6 was called Members Only. The ending is there. You are just too obtuse to get it.
“The black is the last thing Tony sees.”
I totally disagree. If that were the case, then the viewer would have been POV of Tony. We weren’t. We were looking at him from the side from the perspective of….well…nobody…unless they were squatting down near the table (like some servers might do). Chase tipped his hat to numerous mafia movies throughout. I think all of what you saw in the last few minutes in the diner was a final tribute. If Tony were shot dead, then the last image we would have seen would have been from his Point of View…then black. Tony lives. It’s getting kinda late to do a follow-up movie, but as a few others said, a prequel would kick ass!
c,mon James, sopranos really gave a big lift to your career. Why you always putting down the show? Anyway, Chase should create a new a series about Johnny soprano and Tony’s mom. that would be very interesting and they wouldn’t need Tony to do it.
I find it SO sad that James Gandolfini complains about the “hours”…”work” he SO put in to the “Soporano’s”…the show that made him a star. Please! How ungratfeul. Don’t worry “Cinema Verte” will take you off your pedestal. It was already, first done, and brilliantly…leave it alone. You’re coming off despearate…but then most in our entertainment industry already know that.
He thought all those hundreds of people he beat up were women? That explains a lot.
PS — I remember he tried to choke that crazy girlfriend of his but who hasn’t done that? Anyway, she was going for it. Other than that, I don’t remember him throwing a beating on any women. (?)
And that wife of his, man, she was constantly asking for a trip to the moon. The man was a saint.
I can’t believe Winslet has not seen the original Mildred Pierce. That’s close to saying, “Casablanca? Eh, never seen it.”
I can understand it. Her quote about never be able to “un-see” it is why any actress should NEVER watch another actress play a role she’s cast in. I played Margarite Bertholt in an L.A. production of Judgement at Nuremberg, and I made the mistake of watching the original movie, with Greta Garbo as Bertholt. Although I did all I could to give this character WAY more dimension than Ms Garbo did, and, in all due respect, than the PLAYWRIGHT did, I was still raked over the coals in the L.A. Times for “channeling” Ms. Garbo. If I hadn’t watched the film, I would have been flattered by the review. But I will always wonder how much of Garbo got under my skin, so much so that no matter what I did to disengage from her onscreen mystique, I’d failed somehow. So I totally get it.
Come on Gandolfini! Your fan base- the ones who made you rich, crave a Sopranos movie. We love you man! Please rethink!
150 hours a week? ummm, that would be over 21 hours a day,7 days a week. That is quite an exaggeration. So why not compromise? Why not negotiate terms to do 8 episode seasons every other year or something. Or, cut way back on work hours and make it more fun. Do some exotic location eps around the world. Something, anything for the millions of fans that crave more Sopranos. Do outside projects and still entertain people that love the Sopranos. Many musicians have done this and succeeded. Why can’t this cast and crew?
Yeah there are many ideas possible for spin offs. Tony could be in a new psychiatrist’s office in the first episode of the spin-off starting to tell of his mother/father/growing up….wash to flash-back….there is season 1. Only need Tony for 10 minutes in first episode. Season 2: Tony, Silvio, Paulie, Tony B., Ralph, Jackie Sr., Bobby B. as teenagers fleshing out Ralph’s story about their “Mickey Mouse” scores running swag and pot as kids. Include the take down of Feech’s game..etc. They could easily do other stuff Sopranos related and keep everyone happy. Every once in a while, when the actors that left the original show want back in they could do an episode that left off in the original series.
They could do a series on Junior, Liva and Johnnie that could be interesting. However, if James Gandolfini doesn’t like playing Tony Soprano, the part that made his career, that’s fine. Doesn’t he get clipped in the final episode, or at least that’s what we’re meant to believe. I see no problem creating a show about what happens after that goes down. Bring on Paulie Walnuts! He’s the last man standin’!
The only way is to make a new aeries . The Aprielle’s . Based on Jackie as boss you can bring back and re write every single character .
His mother on the show died in real life. Good luck with a show.
Um…Its weird, when they showed scenes from the past of Lydia they didnt use the same actress.
But really, Chase killed Tony off in the finale. He died, its over.
Haha I’m pretty sure that isn’t at all what the writers were going for, think smaller, the reason it could concluded that was was to allow the viewers to form their own opinions and of course keep the possibility of a movie open.
Absolutely agree with this. I believe Tony died but the writers left it open so each person could walk away with their own ending and make all the viewers happy. Even though I think he died I still formed my own ending where he lived and they all lived happily ever after. This also leaves the option for a movie after the shows timeline where Tony still lives or is dead depending on what they feel like writing.
I love the sopranos and a movie needs to be done….just for justice to the fans cause evrything else has a movie!
Only just finished watchin all the Sopranos I enjoyed every min, plz do another only, James what a top man.
If there was a new series you would see Tony waking from one of his dreams, Chase cleverly left the ending open… It was left to the viewer to decide what happened… Very clever !
Tony, all I ever heard from you over the years is you putting down the character and the show??
WHY?? Just becuase you don’t agree with what he does?? This is called acting?? I sure hope your acting?? We all know you aren’t Tony Soprano! He’s cool!
Now do something for your true fans! MAKE THAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just want to say, I loved the Sopranos! EWvery Sunday night I would tell my boyfriend to stay away from me and put the remote in the fridge! We don’t need it for 60 minutes. My boyfriend would have to wait!
James, THE FANS WANT–NEED–TRUELY HAVE TO HAVE THIS MOVIE!! WE ARE IN SERIOUS WITHDRAWL!!
I haven’t been the same without you! No Paulie white T-shirts..No Forget abow!!! We need you back even for just 2 hours??
I feel like i’m losing my mind.. Dexter–Curb–are great but they don’t even compare to your show.
THINK ABOUT YOUR FANS!! STOP PUTTING US DOWN James–Stop!! i’m losing my mind in withdraw. Not fair.–Bad aaaa BOOM!
who will ever really know for sure what chase meant by the ending. I feel it was a crap ending for that alone. We all supported the sopranos through every season… he owed us better than that ridiculous question mark and multiple debates. That being said, I think a cool new series would be an all grown Anthony Soprano Jr who eventually became more gangster like and took over as boss. This would allow Chase to use the first season to explain what really happened to Tony and would make for a new exciting series. If we never see the sopranos again, oh well… but I am guessing it will be the last real mob/mafia focused series or movie… if not a sopranos sequel or prequel then what’s left to do that hasn’t already been done?
yo James!
Listen: it’s cool that you are Tony Soprano,
you filled our lives with intresting things to talk about,
the lifestyle that you portrayed in the series,
exposed new Jersey in a new fassion,
we love the soprano’s, we love you, make the movie,
bring us something to satisfy your fans, you chose to be an actor, you were in movies that didn’t make you who you are today!
the series of the sopranos made you who you are today,
JR Ewing, was the man of the late 70s all the 80s and early 90s
you can be the man of the milenium, actually you are the man! this series made you who you are, accept it, live it, follow through, don’t quit, when ever you make another movie, you will always be known as ( T ) , whatever you do always T, just T
that’s who you are “T” and in all choices, i would rather be (T) then anybody else, make the right choice (T)
Why are you people acting like get put down The Sopranos in any way with his comments? Oh and he dead.
Regarding the last scene in the final episode: it’s quite obvious why it ended the way it did. The writers most certainly left room open for a future film. Gandolfini is a talented actor. However, nothing else he’s done has been equal to his performance as Tony Soprano. Unfortunately, for him (Gandolfini), the majority of your fan base is a result of the Sopranos, who will always want more of Tony every time we see you act. Yes, you’ve demonstrated you’re acting abilities are broad, far beyond the scope of playing the head of a mafia crime family, but we want more Tony.
It’s my opinion a Sopranos film is inevitable. Gandolfini will never reach the same level of success outside his 8 year role that captivated all of us.
Bring it back now
First i wanna say..the Sopranos was the best show ever made for telelvision. I am absolulty addicted. I still watch all the reruns…however i want more..i want a movie or a new season…they could have the black screen be Tony waking from a dream and it start way back before Jakie was dead or when he was a kid and could bring back the cast. Anyways…im still trying to find something to replace it with and i just cant seem to find it. Hopefully someone someday will wake up and make it happen
The Soprano’s is the best thing I have ever seen on TV, WITHOUT DOUBT!!! Even my wife became addicted to watching it, PLEASE MAKE A MOVIE!! TV isn’t worth watching now, no other series will ever match the Sopranos for story line, depth of the characters, music, drama etc etc…
Come on we need more of the Sopranos…Either a movie or sometype of series again…That was by far the best show on t.v…..Come on writers do it for us….How about it James and cast…Mike from Racine wi.
