From Ray Richmond who is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s TCA coverage:
UPDATED: During Californication‘s TCA session, a critic suggested that the dark comedy might have gone too far in Season 3 to resemble porn. “Oh , wait, that’s totally not fair,” star David Duchovny said. Added creator/showrunner Tom Kapinos, “I don’t feel like it’s ever gone too far. And porn is real people having sex on film. I mean, these are people pretending to have sex while naked. There’s nothing ‑‑ to me, that’s not porn.”
Co-star Evan Handler was also quick to support his boss. “Every one of the sex scenes in the show, at least the ones I’m involved with anyway, they’re never just to show two people have sex,” he said. “They’re always to make a comment about sex or about these particular characters having sex or the relationship of those characters. I wouldn’t get a lot of titillation value from the show, personally. It’s all in the pursuit of a comedically true moment.”
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Not sure he knows what soft core pornography is. Soft core pornography is people pretending to have sex while naked. Hardcore pornography is people actually having sex.
That being said, I don’t anyone would ever consider watching Evan Handler have sex titillating, so I think his defense was a strong one.
What’s the matter with you Americans? A little nudity constitutes porn now?? Please for the love of god wake up to yourselves. Californication is a dramatic series. An excellent one. A show that explores relationships, love and human sexuality. Why do you people have such a hatred for the human body? We all have them, they all have the same basic form, and we all use them for the same basic purposes. Will you please grow up?
So you just assume that critic is American, even though they aren’t named? They could have been British, Canadian, Asian or Australian. You just make an ignorant, reactionary assumption? And even if the critic was American, what does his or her opinion have to do with Americans as a whole?I think you need to grow up and stop making assumptions and generalizations.
lol
The sex during the 3 season did start to go over the top. Kinda felt sorry for sarandon’s daughter having to go all stripper in her first mainstream piece. Guess she had to use the best card in her deck considering her serious lack of chops.
I feel sorry for that girl playing Hank’s “love interest” this season. The actress. She was only 18 when they filmed the season, and she went nude in her first episode.Hell, I think she’s been naked 3 times in 2 episodes.
I’m pretty sure this is her first adult role.Hell, she’s only 2 years older than the actress that plays Duchovny’s daughter.Fans of the show are used to seeing Hank with younger actresses/characters, but it’s very weird seeing an 18 year old and a 50 year old have sex scenes.
This is unbelievably presumptuous. As if every human would experience being photographed nude with the same horror you seem to assign to it. Is there no room in your mind for the possibility that she actually likes the material, and is thrilled by the experience of working with terrific actors on a highly regarded, well liked, and very successful premium cable tv show? Maybe she finds the nudity and sexual material to be utterly untraumatic. Such things are possible, you know.
Oh please. Eva Amurri didn’t HAVE to go all stripper. She CHOSE to. And she chose to because she got meaty stuff to do besides showing her body. The writing rocks and she was very lucky to be cast.
Californication is totally soft porn. It ain’t Chekhov.
“Are you blowing smoke up my snatch”? the best line ever-
the sex depicts this town, this is how we behave to to make out parents proud-
Correction, that’s how you behave in you fantasies while jerking off to internet porn in your mom’s basement.
This is kinda funny because just a few days ago, an actor from Showtime’s Shameless made a joke about Shameless being the closest he’s ever come to making soft core porn.
The show’s gotten as sick, sleazy, and worthless as David Duchovny’s marriage-busting sex addiction. It used to reflect the town and was clever. The shark’s wad got shot and jumped a long time ago.
Oh no!!! naked people having sex- Oh my god what ever will we as a society do!!!
If you don’t like it change the bleating channel.
It’s a great show that acknowledges that people often have wanton sex and in large quantities.
When did it become gospel that you had a right to not be offended by ANYTHING on tv?
“It’s a great show that acknowledges that people often have wanton sex and in large quantities”
Are you fucking serious? You can’t be dumb enough to believe Californication is portraying reality, right? In what world does a out of work 50 year old writer has beautiful young women, successful college professors, and every barfly in his vicinity throwing themselves at him at every turn? Californication is a 15 year old boy’s softcore porn fantasy , nothing more.
^ your 100% right …same goes for the delusional actors/actresses on that show “Tell me you love me” …who say what they do is non pornographic…that is exactly what it is ..Softcore porn to the fullest..Sex in legitmate entertainment has to cross the line to be that graphic ..to get audiences ..its not about art anymore …its porn…”games of thrones” is Clearly softcore porn..
i understand the depiction of the roman sexuality is needed to authenticate the sex scenes..but understand that the people back then were more sophisticated then we are now..they didnt treat sex like a taboo ..as we do now ..we have created Pornography ..we made sex a taboo ..we allowed to become that..in order to reverse the affects we need to show it from and objective point of view
We all know that wont happen because if it does the born industry would be out of buisness..its politics Californication is about a porn star more or less..even though the character is a writer (a writers life is drab and boring and lonely and uninteresting )..which the reason im sure for the graphic sex scenes …the sex scenes shouldnt stand more than the story line when they do..it stops becomeing legit programming and starts becoming tasteless pornography
i understand sex is a part of life ..but when you make it the main focal of a story it becomes something else ..Sex in film is as artistic as showing someone taking a shit ..it holds no artistic value what so ever ..Michelle borth sonya wagler ..and actresses like them have clearly been duped into doing
Softcore pornographic material to make up for their lack of talent as actors/actresses plain and simple ..when the people start excepting what they do as the norm..that means they are clearly influenced by the culture and are a by product of over stimulatation …..any and all sex scenes in legit entertainment
should stray away from making sex scenes real ..once you’ve crossed that line your in the pornography world plain and simple
…sex scenes unless involving porn should be done in the most mundane and plainest way possible just to show the unimportance of it …and if this is the future of sex in hollywood then start letting and excepting actresses like sasha grey into the legit film buisness because at least they want to work towards doing legit work
I agree. The show is a comedy, it it does a damn good job at making me laugh. Evan and Pamela busting the sink last season. How is that porn? Haha. The “15″ joke in this next weeks episode, classic. I’d never consider Californication soft core porn. Its hilarious and oddly dramatic and obviously America agrees because after one ep, its already renewed for season five! Love the addition of Addison too!
Shocked this is still on…
The cast deserves better.
Somebody should take a poll,-what do people bitch about more, the sex or the violence in film and television.
Americans need to get laid more often, the haters are probably still stuffing socks at their computers.
It’s “The XXX Files.” Personally, I thought it was a reality show about David Duchovny.
It’s softcore porn. Why are people afraid of labelling it what it is? The “story” only serves to meet new female characters to get their gear off. I don’t have an issue with it being on TV, but just be honest, people.
This point of view is just impenetrable to me (if you’ll pardon the pun).
Here’s the deal: Californication might contain some elements, and some individual sequences, that could also be found in soft core porn. But to turn that into them being the same thing is beyond a stretch. It’s like saying scrambled eggs and brownies are the same thing, because they both have some butter in them. Yes. They both contain butter. And soft core porn and Californication both have some semi-explicit, and perhaps prurient, nudity. But to say Californication is the same thing as the porn, which contains nothing else, is absurd.
Whether you enjoy the show or not, it’s just absurd.
truer words were never spoken ..to the producers and actresses actors of shows like these who say that what their doing is non pornographic..WAKE UP!!! it is exactly that and while their is nothing wrong with it ..stop denying that thats what your show is porn with plot’s ..plain and simple ..this new generation is centered on porn and sextapes…of celebs so it doesnt surprise me that …shows like that are coming out..Newer generations lack taste and talent ..they just strictly go for shock Value now a days ..this is whats used as a substitute ..for art ..we need to wake up and see .Sex unless shown in a pornographic frame ..should be shot from a objective point of view..No need to sex as realistic as possible ..Porn has already covered those basis..nothing to ground break about …when it comes to sex..its already been down already…by porn. californication, hung, games of throne,striekback,..these shows are clearly porn with plots…this is the future of talentless entertainment ..all actors and actresses will /should just forget about trying to make it in hollywood and just go the porn route
Me like the nudity.
Will there ever be a day when a show can portray sex without it being labeled as pornographic in some way? As soon as a boob or a backside makes an appearance it seems there is always some kind of indignant moral standard and code that has been broken and the labels start to fly. Porn. Sleaze. Sick. Disgusting.
Californication is not soft core porn and far from it. It’s a great little show that combines hilarity and drama in a surprising and sometimes brilliant kind of way. A show before it’s time I guess, based on some of the comments here, but nonetheless it does have it’s fans and enough to get renewed for another year. Hurray!!!
Thank you for a rare dose of sanity. Even if you hated the show, at least you can tell the difference between comedic nudity and pornography.
I have watched the show from day one; it’s got a lot of sex, no question–but hello..it’s called CALIFORNICATION people. The problem now, though, is part of what made the show balanced was the family dynamic between Hank and his ‘wife’/daughter (not wife, technically) and now that they’re both pissed at him, not sure how they can get that back on track. So, I hope this doesn’t devolve into Hank screwing every other woman who crosses his path while working on the movie of Fucking and Punching. We’ll see. Love Evan Handler’s character..looking forward to seeing him back at the big agency..(although I miss Kathleen Turner–she was a hoot)As to whether it’s soft core porn–it is. Deal with it.
I’d have respected the sex in this show much more if they hadn’t had a scene in the first season — the episode with Paula Marshall — that was practically a note-for-note rip-off of the famous scene in Nicole Holofcener’s (otherwise fairly bland) Lovely and Amazing, where a nude Emily Mortimer asks Dermot Mulroney to tell her what’s wrong with her body.
The minute Californication ripped that off, I was done.
I am sure the creators of the show are still in shock because you gave up watching it.
I’ve watched it a bit at times. I’m watching it more now to see when Stephanie Hunt comes on her episodes.
Why is “porn” such a negative anyway? I mean, the Internet is basically one gigantic porno database with some additional, helpful little sites. That’s because no one likes it or watches it, right? Someone utters the word porn about a great show that happens to have sex in it, and everyone freaks out. Actual porn is one note, but as far as notes go, it’s one of the best. Californication has many notes, one of which is sex. So what?!
People like to watch people do their dance to eventually end up naked and humpin’ up a storm. Both men and women are naked on that show, I might point out, not just the hot 18 year old. Sex lends itself, especially in this show, to some great comedic moments (threesome with Rick Springfield, ha!), and charged dramatic ones (Hank goes down on the wrong girl–oops!).
If I may Gordon Gekko, Porn. Is good.
soft-core?: ?of, pertaining to, or containing sexually arousing depictions that are not fully explicit: soft-core pornography. Compare hard-core.”
Tom Kapinos, “I don’t feel like it’s ever gone too far. And porn is real people having sex on film. I mean, these are people pretending to have sex while naked. There’s nothing ?? ……..Insert Foot in Mouth
People forget the sex line in film between legit and pornography is almost Non existant if not extremly thin..These people are very Niave ..ive seen some of the stuff in californication. It’s safe to say it is softcore pornographic..To say its not is Foolish.
im willing to bet my last dollar if you take the sex out of the show you’d lose more then half the audience. Its just the truth of the situation .Not saying theres a problem with sex on tv/film but when you have to cross that line .You can’t come out and say its not what it is ..(walks like a duck quacks like a duck,Its a duck)
Sex in film/t.v is about artististic and or creative as filming someone taking a shit or Eating ..Its a necessity of life thats about the only statement you can make of it .When you have to go beyond that. In this case with sex scenes .Youve crossed a line into pornography.
Californication soft-core porn with a funny plot plain and simple.Another thing people who defend the show being non softe core.Need to take into account is the society we live in is soo overtyl sexual ..That when a show like this comes along .you cant get bothered when someones first reaction is “softcore porn”..
It’s Niave ,Once again take the sex out of the show ..it wont be as popular for the simple fact .The show centers around a Man-whore type character..The guys embodies a pornstar ..
Theres nothing you can say to argue to the contrary Its just the simple truth . To say Sex is art is and Oxymoron they put softcore sex in shows like this for the shock value .
Look, It’s not just that their having sex, It’s that the women and (some even men) are complete sluts, having sex for a job and stuff. If to you this is normall, then fine. But I find it wrong. They can also do the exact same thing with the beautifle “relation ships” and the other stuff while NOT showing the sex scenes. I have children, so I know I don’t want them watching soft porn, but they air this on comedy central at half past 9 here. So no, I don’t have problems with naked people, or sex. But that doesn’t mean you have to bloody show it.
My husband taped the series. I watched about 3 minutes of it before I left the room.
There is no question in my mind as to why delete buttons and parental controls exist. It’s a shame that wives have to utilize these devices to keep smut like this out of their homes.
