No surprise here: the CBS executive session at TCA kicked off with a question about Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen and CBS’ position on his recent erratic behavior off the set of the hit CBS sitcom.
“We have a high level of concern, how could we not,” CBS’ entertainment president Nina Tassler said. “On a very basic human level, I have a concern of course – this man is a father, he has children, a family. But you cannot look at this simplistically. He is also a performer who comes to work and does his job very well… So on a personal level, we are concerned, but he has his job, he does it well, and the show is a hit.” The subject was also broached after the Q&A session, with a reporter suggesting that in any other line of work, Sheen would’ve been fired long time ago. “For what? For going to work and doing his job?” Tassler retorted. Several other notable tidbits from Tassler’s Q&A:
- CBS plans to order pretty much the same number of pilots as last season. “We don’t have many holes to fill, so those that make it have a pretty good chance of success,” Tassler said.
- On renegotiations with NCIS star Mark Harmon whose deal is up at the end of this season: “This is the nature of the business, we’ve become the victims of our own success. But we are very confident that Mark will continue on the show.”
- On the potential impact American Idol‘s move to Thursdays at 8 PM would have on The Big Bang Theory. Even with the judge changes on Idol, “it’s a force of nature, it’s a powerhouse,” Tassler said. “The good part is that Big Bang is a superstar, we are thrilled how it has done on Thursday. And any time you put hit shows in a time period, there are enough eyeballs to go around.”
- On the decision to drop A.J. Cook from Criminal Minds. Tassler said it came out of the discussion related to the development of the show’s upcoming spinoff. “We though, ‘is there an opportunity with the sipnoff to evolve some of the roles (on the mothership series)?’.” On Paget Brewster, whose episode commitment was reduced this season and whose future on the show is uncertain: “We’d hope that she would stay, she has the option to do so.”
- On Paula Abdul’s modestly rated dancing reality show Live to Dance: “I wish we could’ve done better the other night,” Tassler said but stressed that the network is happy to do a show “that sets out to do more than exploit.”

Thank you. Comprehensive as usual!
AS for Tassler defending/considering the future of Charlie Sheen’s job. The retort: it depends on the job. I wouldn’t expect an assassin to be out in the public since his/her job depends on stealth and secrecy. I believe star actors are the exact opposite on their job – most times their success depends on their relatability in persona, on screen. 2.5 MEN plays into Sheen’s persona and vice versa; the public will eat it up only for so long.
…an assassin? Really? Couldn’t think of a real occupation to compare actors to?
how about comedy development exec, not so stealthily killing a genre one decision at a time? you would expect a comedy exec to be funny or at least have a sense of humor, but they mostly don’t and somehow it doesn’t affect their ability to keep their jobs. but only because a few shows squeak by in spite of them (but only because Chuck Lorre or some other heavy hitter is Exec Producing). don’t think it’s true? see character clearly based on a certain Eye exec on Showtime’s new show Episodes! and yes, I have a job but thanks for playing : ) i love you all!
Would be ironic if Charlie Sheen got sober, develops depression, fails to show up to work, and the show is really shut down.
Re: the reason for the changes to CM original. Huh?
o Paula, your (faux) eternal optimism is an inspiration to us all
you din’t seem to have a problem with the exploitation when American Idol was signing your paychecks
It would be interesting if they wrote Sheen’s partying problems into the show. Have his character going through the same stuff. Anyone know if they’ve considered this?
Don’t you watch the show?
Have you actually watched the show?
He is living his character!!!!
“. . . we’ve become the victims of our own success.”
That statement characterizes what is wrong with business in America, not just show business, but corporate America in general. With great success, the corporation feels like the victim since they are pressured to share the wealth with the American worker.
Every American has the inherent right to be screwed.
Paula guested on Ferguson the other night and she must’ve come straight from reviewing her debut numbers. She was cold, withdrawn and standoffish and would not get up and dance for Secretariat. Ferguson grew bored with her and tweaked her in kind. Given Paula’s historic inability to pull herself together and pro up to do a show or support it, I predict a short sharp life for her little program.
What does firing AJ Cook have to do with the development of the spin-off?
Besides, no Criminal Minds fan I’ve seen has any interest in the spin-off. Everyone just wants AJ Cook back and for CBS to stop messing around with our show!
Have you seen the show Derek?
That’s all he does on the show. Party, girls and drink alcohol.
The show is loosely based on Sheens life.
Again, with commenter above. Re: A.J. and CM… Huh? how does that answer even make sense. I mean even the subtext makes no sense. ??? I call bs all around. If u have pie on ur face, just man (woman) up and acknowledge. Says a lot when Ed and CM peeps keep insisting that the spinoff has nothing to do with A.J.
I understand Tassler’s comment about Sheen showing up and doing his
job well, but perhaps she’ll feel differently when Sheen is found dead in a hotel room. It’s only a matter of time.
Many times when an older, or recently sick/operated on actor is cast in a movie role they have to undergo a physical in order to provide the studio some assurance/insurance that they will actually LIVE through production and meet the details of their contract.
So if, let’s say, Jeff Bridges was on the virge of heart failure he wouldn’t be cast in a role because of the change he might die.
But when Charlie Sheen cokes up, drinks-with-intention-to-kill, and generally endangers his own life, CBS doesn’t see this as cause to be concerned that their cash cow is being put at risk?
One O.D.
One.
That’s all it will take, Tassler. If you have religion, now would be the time to use it.
They fired AJ Cook approx. 8 months ago and THAT’S the best excuse they could come up with?! BULLSHIT.
Regarding the treatment of Paget, no doubt she’ll be leaving if she lands a pilot that gets picked up by a network. She deserves better.
Nope, it’s actually loosely based on Eric Lapidus’ life, since he conceived it based on his fear of what would happen to him if his wife ever kicked him out and he had to move in with his single older brother. He sold it to CBS and then WB attached Charlie and the Tannenbaums… And Bielzabub.
Criminal Minds has fans?
On average about 14 to 15 million of them weekly
