From Ray Richmond, who is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s TCA Coverage:
Speaking to the media en masse for the first time since landing last fall with his own late-night chatfest at TBS, Conan O’Brien expressed that he’s never been happier – so happy, in fact, that he no longer sees a need to fire shots at his longtime NBC teammate-turned-nemesis Jay Leno.
Meeting TV critics on the Warner Bros. set of his show as part of the semi-annual TCA event, Conan was asked if he ever saw any scenario where he would again speak to Leno. “No, I don’t think so,” he said. “I don’t think, I mean…there’s nothing to be figured out. We all know the story and we all know what happened. Life is short. I’ve got kids and a family and a life to live and I’m really happy here so I don’t think about it too much. And I’m sure he’s busy.”
Compare that dismissal to Conan’s reaction when it was pointed out he’d received a holiday phone call from David Letterman. “He wanted to know what I was wearing,” he quipped. “Sick man. No, it was just a quick call. We hadn’t spoken for a long time. He just called to basically say I haven’t checked in on you and just wanted to make sure we were good. I said, ‘We’ve always been good.’ I said, ‘You didn’t owe me a phone call, but I appreciate it.’ It was nice to get the call.”
Meanwhile, TBS programming chief Michael Wright dismissed any concern over Conan’s sliding numbers after its big opening weel, maintaining that the show’s median age (33) and 18-49 numbers (better than 1.4 million adults 18-49 on average) bode well for a long run. “He’s number one with key demos, and we’re thrilled that the show is even younger than expected,” Wright said. “The show is a huge success, even if you discount the first week’s numbers. It’s right on track.”
O’Brien was also inspired to speak on a variety of other topics, including:
-Why he misses NBC: “There’s a whole part of my life and body of work that I had there, 17 years’ worth, that I’m very proud of. I was with that company for a long time, had a lot of amazing experiences with them, and I felt like I was a part of that family. There are times when I still feel that loss.”
-Why he hasn’t bothered to shave his beard: “I grew it because I hate shaving. It’s a feeling of liberation, and everybody who loses a job does it, or does something, you know? I started it my last day on ‘The Tonight Show.’ Next thing you know, we’re taking publicity photos with the beard. It could go tomorrow. It could fall off entirely after my body loses all its testosterone. But I completely reject the notion I’m in any way a sex symbol and I think my fans do as well.”
-Why he loves his new job: “It’s a very different feeling here. It’s like we’re all on a pirate ship, a spirit that I think comes through on television…My job is to have fun on television and try not to overthink it, and that’s what I’m doing. This show has just been a crazy journey of discovery.”
-Why the ratings continue to show him drawing in young people, with a median audience age of 33: “That’s a good question, and the answer is I really don’t know. When I started out, I always assumed those people would come along with me. And that’s happened, but at the same time I continue to attract the people in their 20’s.”

Now if he could do something about his hair.
His hair is amazing!
Never really seemed like Conan took shots at Leno. NBC yes, Leno, not really. Good to see he’s moving on with his life and is happy, unlike the crappy first half of 2010 he had.
Please! The hair is part of his logo now! What he needs to do is get working on some bits and characters that can go on for years, like “In the Year 2000/3000″ or “If They Mated” or “Celebrity Surveys” or, one of my favorites, “Staring Contest”. They’ve already got two characters, Ted Turner and Minty, though they really should update Minty into a round after-dinner mint so he can go year-round.
People are watching this? Hard to believe.
when Leno does inevitably retire – maybe in 3 years? – I predict NBC will make a serious effort to hire Conan for the 11:30 slot.
Conan is an overrated piece of shit. I’m tired of his martyr act.
you’re an provincial piece of shit and i’m tired of your trite complaints.
aaaaaaaaaaaa-men.
forgive and forget, move on, ya know.. if life truly is “too short” then quit being such a baby
What a drama queen. Loser.
Fuck Jay Leno.
I used to not care for Conan, but his problems with NBC made him relatable to me, and turned him into an underdog i can root for. I find the TBS show exciting to watch. And my kids like him — they watch him at 8pm west coast time. He’s made some young fans that’ll watch him for decades.
He’s still on the air?
Hey Ben,
Ridiculous, vitriolic, spiteful comment, dude. I’ve been following comments by Leno fans for the past several months on sites like this and Leno’s facebook page and I gotta say you guys sound an awful lot like a hate group. I don’t think there’s a huge difference between the angry, grammatically poor, misspelled rants of Leno followers and the writings and videos of the Arizona shooter…the hatred and ignorance is off the charts.
I liked both Leno and Conan, but when the rabid Conan fans turned from correctly blaming NBC to a mob spewing vile Jay-hatred, that turned me off completely. Leno became the victim to me. It was so undeserved and so high school.
Nice timing. He appeared just as his Tuesday night ratings came out – his smallest audience (900k viewers) and worst demos to date.
What martyr act, Ben? It’s the media reporters who want to keep that slant going in their reporting. Obviously, he has moved on and doesn’t want anything to do with Leno. It’s up to the media reporters to stop asking those questions.
I can understand a certain feeling of loss if you spend nearly twenty years of your life working in one place. He should be proud of his work on NBC. I’m happy that he is moving on.
I’m part of the lost Generation that will remember Conan going out with that stirring rendition of Freebird. The Man don’t pay me enough to see CoCo on TBS. Best not to dwell.
I’ve grown weary of all these prima-donnas. The only one I can barely stomach is Jimmy Kimmel… and in very small doses.
Hes in 3 or 4th place, so he has got nothing to say. Jay is still #1 in the ratings.
When will he every admit he started it all by making NBC push Jay out.
Conan’s ratings are lower than Jon Stewart’s now, that is telling something. The honeymoon with fans won’t last forever. Conan hasn’t really ever liked Jay to begin with even though his strong ratings gave Conan his damn audience, gotta love the hypocricy with it all.
On a related note: Why are the people writing the ratings press releases and stories comparing Conan’s ratings to Leno’s as if a basic cable station were the same as a broadcast network?
The right way to do the comparisons is to compare the percentage of people with TBS (or people with TBS, ages 18-34, or ages 18-49) that Conan is getting with the percentage of people who can get NBC (or potential NBC viewers ages 18-34 and 18-49) that Leno is getting.
Nice timing. He appeared just as his Tuesday night ratings came out – his smallest audience (900k viewers) and worst demos to date.

Can Conan just stop whining! He’s overtaken Anniston as “America’s victim” (and that was hard to do)
His ratings are awful. Stewart beats him constantly, and I hear George Lopez is pretty mad at being bumped from his timeslot cuz his show is doing lousy now.
he is such a classless person. what will his excuse be when he fails on tbs?
Happy to hear he is going to stop blaming Leno for his failure. Go spend all the free money you got from NBC and stop complaining. Business is business – something he clearly doesn’t understand.
Letterman and Kimmel are both bitter because they know they will never beat Leno. LENO RULES!
