From Ray Richmond, who is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s TCA coverage:
The offbeat and quirky second-year NBC comedy Community that’s generated a growing cult following for its zany, genre-expanding style, has plans for a forthcoming episode to surround the legendary role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons – with its cast playing it for the entire half-hour. “They’ll just be sitting at a table playing,” creator/showrunner Dan Harmon said of the series that last season centered one memorable episode around paintball, during a TCA session in Pasadena late this afternoon. “But there are (things done stylistically) that will make it really interesting.”
This is the same series that just featured a Christmas episode shot entirely in claymation and stop-motion animation, another with Betty White doing rap and a third filmed entirely within one room that showcased a monkey stealing pens.
Community is “a huge experiment,” Harmon stressed. “Every time we do something different and have success with it, each subsequent thing becomes less and less of a gamble. If I’d had to play by the same rules as traditional sitcom writers, I’d have wound up making a bad sitcom. Fortunately, I haven’t had to.”
One critic asked Harmon if, with Comcast’s takeover of NBC looming and a new programming chief, Bob Greenblatt, poised to take the reins, he feared that a series as unconventional as Community could be at risk. “You know, I’m just a farm boy living his dream,” Harmon replied. “I will tell you that NBC is just so focused on whether or not the show is good. They’re dedicated to quality. It’s like they don’t know what a horrible strategy that is for building ratings. All I know is that I’m getting to do the show I want to do. I’ve got two seasons that no one can take away from me and everything else is gravy.”

Community is truly my favourite comedy on the air right now. It is zany, unpredictable, witty and such a pleasure to watch. It has lovely heartfelt moments and superlative performances. Be smart, NBC and keep nurturing this unique show. I may be dating myself, but it reminds me of “NewsRadio” in many ways. Dan Harmon is my dream gateway douchebag.
When is someone finally going to do a D&D TV series? One with dark, suspenseful fantasy stories every week. And maybe with a script that doesn’t insult the audience (like the movie did).
‘Community’ is one of the most refreshing comedies to hit television in years. The poster above who said it brought back memories of ‘NewsRadio’ is spot on. Maybe add a bit of ‘Scrubs’ too. Just a zany, envelope-pushing show all around. I love that they always aim high. Sure they occasionally misfire but they’ve got more hits than misses and they’re super unpredictable, which is fun. Keep it up Dan Harmon. You and your cast are making magic at a network not known in recent years for good comedy.
I don’t know who wrote the paintball episode, but I hope they have him do the D&D one. Instant classic.
Which edition of D&D will they be playing?
There are currently four.
I could see Peirce as definitely being a first edition “old timer”.
Jeff and Britta I would see as 2nd edition “Advanced Dungeons and Dragons” fans (Britta probably played to impress a boy she had a crush on). the rest definitely 3rd and 3.5 edition. Shirley would of course be praying for everyones immortal soul. but then again she has a past so she might have been a closet player.
Britta? Really? Was it the bright orange cheato stains, the asthmatic mouth breathing, or the pervasive stench of dodgy hygiene that attracted her to this fellow? Let’s be real here now, the closest a pretty girl will ever come to a twenty sided dice or a lisping mildly autistic dark Elven mage named Twebler Dark-Nacho is a sad dismembered end in a basement crawl space.
Is that you mother?
I wouldn’t say that. The RPG hobby is changing; the last time I played a D&D game (2 years ago in college) the rest of the group was three girls, and actually cute girls, not fat nerdy girls either; one of them was on the college cheerleading squad, for instance.
