From Ray Richmond, who is contributing to Deadline Hollywood’s TCA coverage:
You really can’t blame the production team behind the Amy Poehler NBC comedy Parks and Recreation for feeling pretty good about itself these days, having survived something of a critical drubbing (“It’s a clone of The Office!”) following its premiere in April 2009 to become an unlikely critics’ darling in its second season.
And now with the delayed launch of its third season on Jan. 20, the show finds itself in a unique position: moved behind its sister mockumentary The Office on Thursdays at 9:30 PM after having had months of extra time to fine-tune the product. It’s why executive producer Greg Daniels and showrunner Michael Schur were all smiles this afternoon during a TCA event on the show set at CBS Radford in Studio City. “As Amy says, we started out with ‘Your baby’s ugly’ and now it’s ‘Your baby’s cute’,” Schur said during a private interview prior to a group Q&A. “It really didn’t matter if we’d done a show about Eskimos in Alaska at the beginning, people would have said, ‘Oh, remind me of ‘The Office’.’ There was really no way to avoid that. So we had to take our lumps.
The early reviews of the first six episodes were not kind. But then, Schur says, he began to notice a bit of a turn as the last episode of that first season was airing. “We really started focusing on the characters personal lives more than we had, and something just kind of clicked. We finally figured out what we wanted to do.”
Suddenly, as Parks and Rec moved through season two last year, the reviews transformed from lukewarm to glowing. If there were a Most Improved Player Award for a TV comedy, it would have received it. “Now we’ve got a chance to kind of start over and have word of mouth spread organically,” Schur believes. “And being after ‘The Office’ gives us an opportunity to be exposed to a larger audience.”
During the Q&A, a reporter raised the issue of launching a critical season just as Comcast is poised to take charge of NBC’s fortunes – and if that presented any sort of anxiety. “Well,” Schur noted, “it’s nothing we can control. Whatever the machinations are with the powers that be are out of our hands. The good news is thar we’ve had all of this time before the episodes hit the air to get it exactly right and the way we want it, which is just an incredible luxury.”

parks and rec is still pretty terrible though.
You obviously haven’t watched the second season. This is by far the funniest show on tv with the most heart.
Booooooooooooooo!
Please stick to shows like Jersey Shore, Shit My Dad Says and Two and a Half Men.
What? Are you even breathing?
Parks & Rec is better than The Office now. Do us a favor and actually watch it.
Parks and Recreation is the best scripted comedy on network TV. Greg Daniels and Michael Schur were responsible for some of the best episodes of The Office and they’re just doing great work with Parks and Rec. I love The Office too but Parks and Rec is in much better shape than the aging Office.
Mike, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I watched two or three episodes from the last season, because the critics suddenly changed their minds, but I couldn’t see any improvement and so did much of the audience. Parks & Rec’s ratings showed no upwards movement at all last season.
let me guess..u are a “My Name is Earl” fan!
You deserve the hatred that you’re getting for your post. Parks and Rec is great.
Definitely one of the most improved shows on TV. Cant wait to see the third season!
The first 6 episodes of Parks were actually stronger than the first 6 episodes of The Office (US). Sitcoms need more than 6 episodes to get it right and find their comedic rhythm.
I can’t wait. It was my favorite comedy last season.
I actually find Aubrey and Amy’s characters very funny. It’s more entertaining than “Modern Family” by leaps and bounds…
I predict that once exposed to the larger “post-Office” audience, “Parks and Rec” will eventually eclipse MF.
I’ll take the other side of that prediction. Parks and Rec will not even equal MF in any measurable way that the tv industry cares about.
Parks is pretty great. Best comedy on TV right now.
um, no that would be Eastbound and Down.
Nope sorry Eastbound and Down doesn’t hold a candle to the brilliance that is Parks & Rec.
nope, sorry Matthew Thomas. Eastbound is not a clone of its lead in. Kenny Powers is the most unique chratcer to come along in a long time.
Why are people who are not parks & rec fans clicking on this article at all? Pretty annoying!
season 2 of eastbound was god awful…i wont even watch the 3rd
parks on the other hand is above average
Except that he is like every character Danny McBride has played before. Eastbound and Parks are both good, but neither of them are great by a long shot. But Parks seems to be improving with every few eps.
It’s quite tight. Once it stopped making Leslie the target of every joke, the department felt united and you didn’t feel bad laughing at people, because they were all equal targets and all had their moments of redemption. You loved them all, and you loved to laugh at them all. It’s nice not to feel like a bully sitting at home. Brillo work.
this will just continue getting the same low ratings like the rest of nbc on thursdays.
Never seen a show have a bigger turn around. Parks & Rec is appointment television. Meaning, I record it on my DVR and watch it that night.
“It really didn’t matter if we’d done a show about Eskimos in Alaska at the beginning, people would have said, ‘Oh, remind me of ‘The Office’.’ There was really no way to avoid that.”
Uhhhh, pretty sure a show about Eskimos would’ve avoided the comparison. A show about people working in a Parks and Rec OFFICE, not so much.
“Outsourced” is another workplace comedy but it didn’t receive unfavorable comparisons with The Office, even if it’s far from being good. Leslie Knope was too much of a female Michael Scott and writers hadn’t managed to give her a proper voice during season 1 (the finale was an improvement mostly due to Andy).
Besides, they had tried too hard to differentiate it from The Office by making a distinction between a company and public service. They were too many public meeting with weirdos asking silly questions and Leslie making a fool of herself during a long time. This kind of cringe-inducing humor works best at small doses and Ricky Gervais’ brand of comedy (the original “Office”, Extras) handles it with much more balance. When you compare a first season episode with the public meeting in “Sweetums”, an highlight of season 2, the tone has improved by a landslide.
Last, I’m happy that they’ve stopped focusing anything about building this damn park. Now, if they knew what to do with Ann…
Wow, did you really take Schur’s comment that literally?
Mr.Schur is right. I’ve had people complain to me that the show is too much like “The Office”, and then say they’ve barely seen the show. How in the f**k are you able to come to such a conclusion then?
Can’t wait! Hopefully having The Office as its lead-in will help boost ratings a little, but judging by the rest of the Thursday night block as long as it hangs around the mid-2s or so in the 18-49 demo I hope it’ll stick around (kinda sad that ratings that low constitute a renewable show on NBC, but I love P&R so that’s fine with me!)
Parks and Recreation is beginning to hit its stride now. The showrunners are doing fine. Hope they do OK in ratings considering a shortened mid season year. P&R needs to have a full year to continue to grow.
What is wrong with some of you people ? ” Parks and Recreation ” is one of the best t.v. shows – even much better than ” The Office ” & ” 30 Rock”. ” Parks..” is one of the few comedies that is wonderfully written, well-acted , and it has spectacular chemistry between the cast members . I am so happy the producers added the gifted , Adam Scott to the cast.
Finally someone with some sense! I agree that it is funnier than 30 Rock or the Office!!! Hells ya!
This headline and article felt like something from the Onion:
“Critics like television show.”
Fill in the blanks with an article about some people liking a show on television.
Awesome. Thanks for the crack reporting, team.
Ron F’ing Swanson is one of the greatest characters ever created.
Agreed – Ron rocks.
Amy Poehler is one of the nicest human beings on earth, and it’s wonderful that her show is such a big hit. Now, if only someone can figure out what to do with Matt Walsh, Matt Besser and Ian Roberts…
I was adverse to this show at first too, because it did seem to be so much like The Office. But now I have obsessively watched the first two seasons and have to admit that it is actually better then The Office at this point. Though I am hopeful that with the return of Holly things will become a little more interesting next season.
I’ve tried watch The Office and couldn’t get into it. The characters mostly bored and annoyed me. But Parks and Rec is so freakin’ funny!!!! I love every character. My favorite episode is when they go hunting and Ron Swanson gets shot in the butt. LOL!!!
I love this show!! Amy Poehler is hilarious. I can’t wait to watch Season Three.
The rumor going around at the TCA was how much would still be left of the current crop of shows once Comcast takes over.
That’s not a rumor, that’s a question.
I found the first 2 seasons of packs and rec. on Netflix. Me and my son love this show. It is so funny and I really enjoyed watching it. I’ve been looking forward to the new season. Looking forward to see if a new park will be built and finding out if April and Andy end up together. I don’t have Cable though so hopefully the episodes will be online. Glad it all worked out and you guys are making another season. Love The Show
